i think the reason why Anime has a lot of German names and terms, it's very simple, German language sounds cool while also has that "archaic" vibes. It also has a lot of connections to spells and witches folklores. It's not even japanese anime that does this. Chinese games like Genshin also starts the story in a fictional germany "Mondstadt", it has a lot of important world lores like Witches group, leylines, and spells.

in WWII Japan was fairly close with Germany. They had exchange student programs and tourism. Arguably, Japan is more interested in Germany than the western world.

It’s also because German folklore is pretty rich. A lot of people take for granted things in modern fantasy which about 75% of the tropes tend to come from folktales, about the other 25% is Celtic which is a neighboring group which eventually got absorbed into the Germanic cultures which took over most of north and Western Europe.

They were allies of n ww2 Japanese film and anime is filled with references to the German army specifically from that time, in some anime there are literally characters wearing Ss uniforms or are a version of it. There's a group in the Manga that comes along later, that dress and look like the gestapo 😂 Idk why people pretend this wasn't a thing, its clear the 2 countries have since then built many connections but this is definitely why it all began

@@silbury2325”fairly close”?? Lol bro they were both fascist states and were allies 😂😂😂. Also Germany is part of the western world as you put it and no country is closer from a cultural perspective to Japan than America. The two countries literally bounce culture off of each other constantly . And that cultural closeness comes from america occupying and helping Japan rebuild after the war

Idk how much of an effect it had Tbh, he was still an active adventurer after the he party disbanded for at least 30 years also Heiters healing is top tier, it wouldnt be a stretch to think he was the most powerful priest in the world. If you haven't read the Manga he was just as op as the rest of the group
@randomdude471
@randomdude471 12 күн бұрын
@@Scyon13 But tbh his OPness comes more from striving to be a better person and making the world a better place than his magical power. And this is pretty much why this show is such a inspired work of art. (Not saying that Heiter wasn't a powerful magic user, just that this isnt what makes him special)
@Scyon13
@Scyon13 12 күн бұрын
@randomdude471 of course, all of that, but no lol, spoilers He could keep the group alive for 2 months without air,food, or water, Mana isn't the only measure of power. he literally had the most potent healing abilities.

It wasn't really brough up in the anime, but Priests are like the healers and buffers of this universe, and are in possession of a special kind of magic bestowed by the Godess, so they age slower and live longer than the average person.
@oxjmanxo
@oxjmanxo 15 күн бұрын
As for why Himmel aged so much if they started their adventure at 16 it would have ended when he was 26. Then add another 50 years and both Himmel and Heiter are in their upper 70s at most. It’s not that Himmel aged fast it’s that Heiter is aging very well. He lived well into his 90s and was pushing 100 at the end.

When Eisen turned down the request to travel with her you mentioned that he still had his moves after seeing him fight that monster on their way to see the meteor Shower. During that fight he was attacking with a tree branch instead of an axe. It's likely true that can no longer weild one.

German is often integrated into Anime not just because it sounds cooler or looks cooler if written in Kanji form it is also popular because of the cultural impact it had in the modernisation from Japan in the early 1900s i think which also might have played a part in it. You also have all the old folklores and such which also is also helpfull i would guess for inspiration and for westerners who are more fimiliar with these.

Heiter probably aged better than Himmel because he's a priest. Praising the goddess probably gives him a slightly extended life span. Or maybe the evil aura horn Himmel was keeping in his drawer made him age faster?

This is a beautiful show, full of great details. I think it's interesting that it literally spends zero time explaining tropes to you because it assumes that you're familiar with common fantasy story/game concepts, so instead it spends its time expanding them or subverting them. For instance, thanks to Tolkien's huge influence, elves and dwarves are usually portrayed as having an uneasy relationship due to their very different outlooks on life, but here you see that Frieren and Eisen are genuinely fond of each other and Frieren is even comfortable enough with him to ask him to be his traveling companion and bodyguard and see his side of things when he declines.

What sometimes gets forgotten is that European languages (aside from English, which a lot of Japanese speak fluently) are as exotic to the Japanese as east Asian languages are to us. This is why you'll see a lot of German and even Spanish names, particularly in fantasy or isekai titles set in Europe-ish fantasy worlds. This is taken to the next level in Frieren, where the translation of the character's name says something about their personality: Himmel is "heaven", Eisen is "Iron", Heiter is "bright" or "cheerful", and Fern is "remote". This continues throughout the series with characters named for "think", "flame", and even "bad".

I wouldn’t say “a lot” of Japanese people speak English . Their English fluency rate isn’t really the highest even among other Asian countries and English is still seen as “exotic” by the vast majority of the population. That’s why they have random “engrish” terms on things like shirts , hats, business signs etc etc. in fact if you speak English at a native level in Japan there will be tons of people that just want to hear you speak English in its proper form because it “sounds cool” .

I think beside what others have said , it’s really just to Asian, there are only few countries you are more aware of ( just like to the west , ppl think of China Japan and Korea when talking about Asian ) On top of that , I think what happened during the world war era , while sad , do create a lot of impacts and thought provoking ideas And of course Japan and Germany relationship during the period , And their personalities such as attention to detail , Doing cruel experiments for knowledge (it sucks but it’s true ) Engineer….etc
