I'm not sure what exact problems this rifle is a solution to (End of world scenario, military rifle, cool range option, etc.), but I have to say that I'm impressed with the simplicity and intelligence of the change-over design and how solid it seems. It reminds me of the feeling I get when I field strip a Glock - smart and simple.

I can’t believe my most favorite firearms channels are finally reviewing this rifle, I came across the Robinson rifle by chance, when I turned 18 a local sports shop that was airsoft and paintball had just turned into a real firearms dealer, I went in a few days after my bday and wanted my first rifle, they had plenty of ARs different brands, they specialized in custom AKs before California ruined the fun, anyways talking to the guy about what would be worth it, the man said “you’ll walk into a shooting range and every man on the line will have an AR style rifle, and almost no one will have one of these” I said you’re right I’ll take it I like being different, to this day I haven’t met another XCR owner, I’ve had mine for 9 years and have only cleaned it and haven’t replaced anything on it other then a red dot, never had any major issues, I love this brand so much and really want to buy another one sometime

certainly not a bad round by any stretch but its playing around in the 6.5 esque world. with things like 25-06/6.5-06, 6.5 creed, 243 win etc.. it was really a solution in search of a problem. there is entire books dedicated to wild cat cartridges like the 6.8 that failed for various reason, typically cost:performance to adopt vs more standardized rounds. the guys that used the aforementioned 243/25-06 the 6.5 was a natural progression due to brass and projectile commonality. and by that I mean we make our own cases, similar to the early days of 300ssk (now 300blk). really it was doomed to fail from the get go. Unfortunately I have seen hundreds of wild cats effectively cease to exist for the same reasons time and time again.

I got mine in 2008 in 7.62 x 39 when that ammo was so cheap. It has literally shot everything from the absolute cheapest Chinese ammo to soviet-era stuff from the 60s…never failed. What is nice about Robinson is they keep updating and improving too. I need to send the rifle to them to get it updated to current specs. They quoted me: New Trigger Part( $125), the new Bolt Carrier Group ($275), A new Gas Tube $45. A new Gas Block $125. This would bring the gun up to the current standard. If I want the new stock $275.00.

With all the extra parts needed to change calibers the other way is to just have different complete caliber uppers and the matching magazines. This way you can have the sights or scopes on each already zeroed.

I have some “multi-caliber” AR15 lowers, and just swap out complete uppers for anything from 5.56 to .458 SOCOM. It’s much cheaper and easier to swap calibers than this seems to be.

But at that point you may as well just get a couple extra lowers, because the lower on an AR is the cheapest, simplest part of it anyways.

Many thanks for Hickok posting this video. He covered the caliber changes really well. However, most of our customers don't by the gun for the caliber changes. They buy them for the reliability and the ergonomics. It feeds better, cycles smoother, extracts and ejects better because of its unique operating system. We did not copy the AR-15, we designed something completely better.

Put a trijicon vcog on it and after a 3 round zero I can't miss at 200 yards(farthest I've been able to test it out so far). My favorite firearm I own by a Longshot.

I've owned a XCR-L for a few years now, and I have a few thousand rounds of 5.56 through it. Overall it's a quality firearm, but not for everyone. Here's my experience so far: Cons: I've had 3 firing pins break on me after 500-1000 rounds each. All of the firing pins broke in the same place, but Robinson Arms has fixed the issue by switching to a different firing pin design. So far I haven't had any issues with the current design, and I don't expect to based off the design. Any XCR is going to cost over $2,000 new. Not necessarily a con if you consider the fact “you get what you pay for”, but it's still quite a bit of money. Slightly heavier than most ARs Obviously XCRs are not as common as ARs, so ordering parts usually takes longer Pros: Accurate and reliable. I cannot recall any malfunctions relating to the gun itself besides the broken firing pins mentioned above which has been resolved. The controls take some getting used to, but I'd say they are an upgrade from the traditional AR controls. The mag catch/release is easier and faster to use, the 45 degree ambi safety is easy to manipulate, and the side charging handle is easier to operate (at least for right handed shooters) My experience with RA's customer service has always been positive Adjustable gas The trigger is excellent. Short and crisp It's pretty easy to swap calibers if you're just wanting one rifle/optic setup Misc: If you're going to attach accessories to the mlok rail you'll want to shorten the screws. Standard length screws are a little too long and will block you from completely removing the barrel. I believe RA will shorten your screws for you if you send them in. The XCR has a higher height over bore than an AR. This will affect your traditional zeroes. A traditional 50/200 yard zero on an AR15 is more like a 70/200 yard zero on an XCR. Some people love the stock on the XCR and some people hate it. The fact that it folds is nice, but I simply hate the feel of the stock in my shoulder. I replaced mine with a magpul stock using an adapter from Dlask Arms. It no longer folds, but it feels much better in my shoulder.

I can't speak to the 6.8 caliber, but by having two complete uppers, one 5.56 the other .300, you can change calibers by pulling two pins. The sights will be set for you and the caliber on each upper without changes and it's a heck of a lot cheaper.

It was rejected for not supplying the blank firing adapters.it was designed to use the standard GI BFA and that wasn't required until after the rifle was submitted. FN had supplied the BFA before it was required but Robarms wasn't allowed to send one in even though the requirement was changed after they had submitted the Rifle. Later I heard word that military just did not want the xcr to have a chance of winning as they were concerned about Robarms not being able to meet demand if they won.

As a current owner of the XCR-L along with a wide variety of comparable DI and piston rifles, my view is that it was innovative when it came out. The rifle is good, just not great. The caliber swap seems at times a solution to a non-problem, or at least a non-major problem. The negative reputation trace back to the company. Over the years customer support fell into the bottom third, ranging from ambivalent to downright arrogant. Parts availability has been problematic. Responsiveness at times was nonexistent. There was even a cautionary note that customers should be extremely nice to obtain any sort of service. (We won't even talk about the sad way RA treated RA-96 owners) At 3 MOA, accuracy is comparable to most rifles in the same class. On the positive side there hasn't been a single rifle related malfunction in 17 years of ownership. It is heavy for what it is. After 30 years in DOD weapon development, I'll say the Defense Industry isn't for everyone, and clearly it wasn't for Alex Robinson. If he thought he had the better mouse trap (a viewpoint shared by every weapon developer), he should have swallowed his ego, and teamed up with a major company with the necessary support staff. Delivering a new weapon into a competition extends beyond getting your mouse trap into the evaluation. The XCR-L will always be a nice range toy from a boutique company.

I've never understood the benefit of easily being able to change calibers / barrels. At first it seems kinda cool, but the truth of it is that it would only really matter to easily be able to change from a medium cartridge to a full battle rifle power cartridge. Being able to switch among .300, 5.56 and 6.8 is ... meh.

Cool rifle but i'd rather just have a complete gun in each of my prefered calibers.

I remember a yt video of a guy doing a “torture” test on his Robinson Arms rifle. He started off with..I don’t know what’s going to happen…..never tested it before…it’s a great rifle….i love it…… the very FIRST test. If I remember correctly it was like a simple mud test….POOF the gun fell apart 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Could be. It might just be me, but mud tests and such mean pretty much nothing to me. I want the best firearm I can get ahold of if it's for defense, etc. I don't really want the loosest firearm or the firearm that is designed to work well when it's packed with mud. :-) A club or hammer will work when it's packed with mud; I would not expect a piece of precision machinery (firearm, watch, engine, computer, etc.) to work well if it's packed with mud, sand, or gravel. It's MY job to keep the mud out of my precision tools, and if I DO get them packed with mud, I'll be about getting them cleaned up.

While I'm pretty married to the AR15 as the pinnacle of the 556 caliber, I'm still searching for a similarly strong 308 platform. AR-10's or AR-308's are lacking. I'm split between the MARS-H and XCR-M.

Xcr-m. The mars-h is still an AR10 at the end of the day.

It is a cool set up, but too many moving and changing parts looks like a problem can arise easy.
