The North Western Fells occupy the area between the rivers Derwent and Cocker, a broadly oval swathe of hilly country, elongated on a north-south axis. Two roads cross from east to west, dividing the fells into three convenient groups. Robinson stands in the southern sector. The principal ridge in this group of fells runs east from Buttermere, climbing over Robinson, Hindscarth and Dale Head. It then turns north, descending gradually toward Derwentwater, the main tops being High Spy, Maiden Moor and Catbells.
Robinson appears bland from Buttermere, smooth rounded slopes curving up from the valley floor. Viewed from Keswick or Newlands to the north, its character is altogether different. From here the wall of Robinson Crags drops from the summit of the fell, a great chunk of the hillside seemingly missing.
The western flanks of the fell fall to Buttermere, the village itself standing on Robinson's territory. The top and bottom sections are quite steep but the slope levels out at 1,500 feet (460 m) to accommodate Buttermere Moss, in Wainwright's words “ a wide marshy depression from which water cannot escape except by being carried away in the boots of pedestrians.” At the head of the lower slope is the subsidiary top of High Snockrigg (1,725 feet; 526 m), a fine viewpoint for the Buttermere valley. On the south western rim of the Moss is Goat Crag, overlooking Buttermere lake.
Running south east from the summit is Robinson's North East ridge it's rough and craggy towards the top before levelling out onto the grassy spur of High Snab Bank. This finally runs down to Newlands Church and the hamlet of Little Town.
Keskadale forms the north western boundary of Robinson and is also the route of Newlands Pass, crossing the North Western Fells from Braithwaite to Buttermere. Its summit at Newlands Hause (1,092 feet; 333 m) lies beneath the northern edge of Buttermere Moss, from which the waterfall of Moss Force drops within easy reach of the road.
According to influential guidebook author Alfred Wainwright, the name Robinson comes from a Richard Robinson who purchased estates in the Buttermere area many centuries ago. These included this unnamed hill which was then called "Robinson's Fell", later shortened to Robinson.
Knott Rigg is located on a four-kilometre (2+1⁄2-mile) long ridge, which springs from Rigg Beck in the Newlands valley midway along its length and runs south westerly to conclude at Newlands Hause. The ridge also contains the adjoining fell of Ard Crags which stands 1+1⁄2 kilometres (1 mile) north east of Knott Rigg; both fells are usually climbed in combination with each other. Knott Rigg is steep sided, with the western flank falling away to the valley of Sail Beck, while the eastern side descends to the minor road between Keswick and Buttermere in the Newlands valley. The fell is best viewed from Newlands Hause, where it is seen as a sharp conical peak (although the highest point is not in view), or from Buttermere, from where a complete picture of the fell is seen (although it is rather distant).

I love that ridge over Robinson. Went over this way when doing the Newlands Horseshoe from where you parked up. It remains to this day one of my favourite walks. Mind you I say that for nearly all the Lakeland walks I do. That's a beautiful view from High Snockrigg Andy. Absolutely stunning. I haven't been there before so another for my to do list. Thanks again for sharing. Not been up to Knott Rigg and Ard Crags before so I really enjoyed it. Billy did look a bit tired at the end Bless him, what a super doggy he is.

Brilliant Andy, just brilliant. Great coverage and narrative with no camera posing like most of the UTUBER'S out there. That's how a mountain walk should be captured. Well done to you and Billy.

Superb video of a beautiful walk - it's ages since I've been up Robinson by that route and it reminded me what a lovely ridge approach that is. That way down from Robinson looks a lot looser than I remember it from years ago and with all the up and down, I'm not surprised the knees were protesting later! And a very poignant video too, thank you for sharing what that wee church means and also Billy's early months on the fells, a lovely story. And I'm with Billy on not liking traffic, roads and busy places, but happy in the hills! Impressive full orchestra performance there when you sent the drone up - they did well to keep up with you on that ascent! ;-)

This is an epic video, I dd Robinson from honister last year with friends all of us novices it was a spur of the moment thing. Dale head, Robinson and Hindscarth and we LOVED it. Watching this I can now see from the drone footage where I was and you just dont get that (well I dont) the enormity of where you are, and fully grasp the views from above. Its videos like this this gives me a sense of achievement. A bit like takng a photo of your hike up to the top using your mobile you cant convey back to friends how steep or how high something is. Love this!

Another belter of a vid Andy and Billy. Newlands Valley is one of our favourite places in The Lakes. Brilliant. We have been down Robinson a couple of times and found one of the scambly bits a bit awkward in descent and said at the time it would be best going up rather than down. This is a lovely route so another on the list for when we're up next ( in two weeks' time). We also enjoyed your recent Scotland vids so are thinking of having a couple of nights near Loch Lomond as we haven't walked in Scotland before. Beautiful drone footage as ever. ATB Brian and Jill 😊😊

Loved that vid Andy. Charlie & myself came down Knott Rigg a few weeks back & my intention was to head over to Moss Force, then over High Snockrigg back to Buttermere. However, having just been up & down Sail before climbing up to Ard Crags, I just couldn’t face it, so dropped down to Mill Beck instead!

That would have been a big walk Tony...its the first time I've put Knott Rigg and Ard Crags together with Robinson it's a big drop into the pass but once back up and on Knott Riggs Ridge it makes for a great walk...thanks for watching buddy big cuddles for Charlie. Brilliant video Andy of probably my favourite part of the whole Lake District. I have fond memories of Robinson as the last time I climbed it was in 2019 during a difficult time for me and it was an escape for me that day. Have you ever been down following Newlands Beck to the spectacular waterfall, one of the best in the whole Lakes. I will definitely re visit Newlands on my next visit in September. Thanks again for the inspirational video.

Newlands Valley is a very beautiful place in't it I think once again along with the North Western Fells it's back up there as my favourite. Thanks for watching buddy and the great feedback very much appreciated 😊 Have a great weekend ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻
