High Rigg & St John's In The Vale from Legburthwaite (The Lake District)

High Rigg is a small Fell in the Lake District, approximately three miles southeast of the town of Keswick. It occupies an unusual position, surrounded on all sides by higher fells but not connected by any obvious ridge. This separation from its fellows ensures that it is a Marilyn (a hill with prominence of at least 150m).
The Hill itself resembles a model of the Lakeland Fells in miniature, complete with crags, intermediate tops, tarns and even a 'pass' crossing the ridge halfway along, complete with church. The northern and southern aspects of the fell are largely grassed and gently rolling, in contrast to the western and eastern flanks which are steep with numerous rocky outcroppings and cliffs.
Travelling south to north the main features are Wren Crag 311(m) overlooking the Vale of St John, Yew Crag facing west and then two tops South and South East and the true summit at 357(m). The ridge then falls to the 'pass' and St John's church, before rising again to Low Rigg. and finally coming to Tewet Tarn a shallow pool standing on a shelf, overlooked by higher rocks.
St John's In The Vale is in the heart of the northern Lake District and is surrounded by many of the most striking of the Lakeland fells. It runs from south to north, set between the rocky flanks of Clough Head to the east and the neighbours High Rigg and Low Rigg to the west. The southern end of the vale is a narrow pass between High Rigg and Great Dodd, just to the north of the small settlement of Legburthwaite.

Did this walk a few summers ago on a glorious day and got some wonderful pictures across the valley towards Blencathra. The walk was just the right length to hold interest for our kids and had amazing views for such a low Wainwright

Superb, I saw this route on Walklakes and we did it when staying at Keswick in January, on a similar day as you got but with a bit more atmospheric mist and clouds and some F-35's flying past! I did Low Rigg too, the end bit of path on the steep river bank was a nice surprise and it was great to enjoy the walk again with your cracking drone shots and lovely dog, cheers! 😃

That's a cracking little route Andy. Another one for my to do list.The weather has been horrendous but finally it seems to be breaking. Fingers crossed. Got up to Wetherlam last Saturday. Super video of a cracking hill. I like your description of it being a micro mountain, Andy, very apt. I think it’s one of my favourite wee hills and such a variety of circuits you can do. Billy’s really kicking up a storm on those drums! And at least it’s not a big hill to haul that piano up! 😂

Never done High Rigg so will have to go on the 'To Do' register Andy 👌 the weather played ball keeping off rain & that's something in itself of late! 😂☔☂️🌂 you managed to fly your drone & captured some great footage 👍 Now having watched Tracey negotiate the mud near the gate , gotta be 10 /10 for the balancing act! Hi Andy, Tracey and of course The Rock Star. What a belting little hill. We were going to do it on the way back to the car at St John’s in the vale after we did Clough head and the Dodds but we had such a brutal day in the snow we knocked it on the head. Will do it using this route when we do. It’s nice to be back out. This poxy weather has put pay to many a planned day in the fells recently. Still it looks like it’s on the upward turn, fingers crossed. We’re out on Friday for a wild camp with Mr Ostle on Binsey for his Wainwright completion, really looking forward to that. Fabulous video Andy. Me and the other half loved that walk and exploring the area a few years ago now. The only disappointment was the farm cafe wasnt open for a brew and scone! Good to see its still going though incase we venture up there again. Cheers Andy, Tracey and The Rock Star

Another great video, guys. Love that walk but haven't approached it from Legburthwaite before. You're right about the weather having been shocking - we've been up here three weeks and have had to pick and chose which days and times to go out. We've done pretty well, though. We were up Helvellyn that day and it was pretty cold and windy. Fingers crossed we have some better weather coming in. ATB Brian and Jill 😊😊
