I had never heard or seen an BYD car until the new government took office in 2023 and I heard BYD were installing a plant in an abandoned Ford factory in the state of Bahia. A couple of months later I saw the news of a huge delivery of vehicles from BYD, coming from over sees. Robinson is the kind of smart academic I met often at Stanford, with no perception of the collapse going on around them. The massive rental housing inflation was just getting started in the 80s and was full force by June '92 which is when I left SU ABD. I had already felt it in the miserable recession of the mid 80s when I was no longer able to easily afford rent and child care as a single mom. College, financial aid and family housing on campus saved us. When I got to grad school in Palo Alto I saw housing inflation - and credit cards - had spread like wildfire. I'd been able to sustain myself with a high school diploma and top secretarial skills, and then sustain myself and my son. but by the mid 80s in WA and of course in SF and the East Bay women my age with average jobs and some college and with no kids had to live with roommates. By 2000 the homeless were impossible to ignore, I stepped thru their sad messes and saw one OD'd with a needle sticking out of the back of his knee, slouched against the curved brick wall of the BART on 16th and Mission on my way to work downtown. I'd been born and raised in NY with millions of people from all over the world, and only saw a handful of homeless people in 20 years. Now in a city of three-quarter million they were impossible to avoid and only the sharpest college grads and/or hustlers could afford an apartment in SF on their own and anyone who wasn't those things could only rent a bedroom. Wages fell so far behind cost of living that refugee families with kids needed three jobs between two parents to survive. That is not a flourishing empire. Those are conditions that economic refugees like my family fled to the US to avoid. My Puerto Rican grandmother with a fifth grade education in PR and no English raised me on her own with minimum wage work thanks to rent control. I had not one but two bedrooms in our rent control apt in the Bronx, plus the kitchen all to myself with my five-books public library weekly limit as a lone latchkey kid and I'd already had to wait impatiently for two days by the time I could finally go back to get five more. Later I figured out we were poor, but I had space, quiet, and once I learned to be not just a nerd but savvy and armed with charm and a knife on the streets, I got real world education. I graduated high school at 16 and at 17 had my own apartment in Washington Heights when it was still a predominantly Irish neighborhood. I made the rent in a week of work and when I became a single mom at 21, I could still cover my bills and have some to spare. None of that is possible now. Single parents can't graduate undergrad with only $3k in debt tho granted I was a Truman Fellow my junior and senior years. The astronomical loss of opportunity, independence, mobility has changed the very fabric of the opportunity and vitality that was still palpable in the early 70s. It still stuns me when I see how Robinson's generation does not even know what it has lost.

Wow Robinson I’m absolutely blown away with the people you invite to the show and this has been absolutely incredible to listen to. I don’t watch /listen to 3 hours movie/radio or even watch KZbin videos but I was hooked the very first time I watched your interview with Norman Finkelstein on Palestine which was such an amazing, informative and eye opener. So I came back for more and this talk with Professor Wolff has educated me so much in 3 hours that I didn’t learn in years. Professor Wolff really needs to be listened by the American government as well as by uk and other European countries because he makes more sense than all these nations put together. As a Muslim living in uk, America’s wars on Muslim nations has definitely caused a lot of suffering including to people uk citizens like me, who weren’t in the war zones but due to it being the nations of out ancestors it implications reached far and wide and so there is much anger and hatred towards America due to its foreign policies for muslims across the globe. Also due to wars on Muslims, we experience a lot of racism because of rise of Islamophobia so we suffer. Also, what professor Wolff says about the implications of Ukraine war and USA influencing our politics has definitely left has struggling with very high inflation.an average working class family is struggling to eat 3 meals a day, keeping warm during winter as gas/electric bills are unaffordable and many people are loosing their jobs, livelihoods and homes because of the situation. Some Families have to live off food banks and their kids have to be fed breakfast at schools but sadly our government and politicians don’t care. Much of the sector is becoming privatised, we don’t receive much or subsidies to help us and we also on verge of losing our healthcare which is free at the moment but won’t be for much longer as its already partially privatised. Benefits, those that are entitled, do help much because they are measly to begin with and entitlement criteria is very strict. Wish our and your governments listen to people like thjs professor. Thank you bring on brilliant people like mr Wolff and Norman Finkelstein, who touch the reality and speak the truth.

This is the beginning of a new understanding for me. Appreciate this interview very much! Brilliant conversation. I went through these 3 hours with a breeze! Thank you. Btw, as in France, Belgium (where I originate from) and Austria , where I spent a lot of time at, are also mainly socialist, have free medical care, get a yearly amount for holidays ('holiday money') and get financial support for students to do tertiaire education. No-one there, with huge student loan debts (a foreign concept, only existing in the US and UK). In Austria, where I lived in Vienna for 11 years, the city of Vienna subsidises couples to buy properties to assist getting on the property ladder. (a 50 000 Euro loan, which you only pay back after 6 years living there, at a rediculous low percentage). You pay 1Euro a day, ie. annual fee of 365 euros to travel around the greater Vienna (train, tram, metro, bus). It is simply amazing why in the US people think that socialism is a swear word. Be careful with what you say.... We Europeans take a LOT for granted! A Socialist system requires VERY smart and VERY honest people!!! And let me tell you.... I HIGHLY doubt that there are Europeans with those traits in power! We also have Inequalities and Poverty creeping around... Probably you don't see it in those Europeans countries but they do exist!!! I actually suspect that there are "European Ghetto countries".... It's not a localized interior thing anymore... It's a global exterior thing. In other words.... Some Europeans countries are "rich" because other countries are EXPLOITED! This is actually an implicit thing for Capitalism make no mistake... In order for someone to be rich, others have to be poor. And Europe also operates under a Capitalist Ideology... You can say it's "Friendly Capitalism" but I've seen enough of this world to know there is no such thing as "Friendly". Also I see European politicians with pornographic high salaries.... That's NOT Socialism bro!!! It's actually a Right-Wing Feudalistic regime! They crush us in taxes... While getting rich!!! That's not Socialism.... That's not "helping the poor" and making things "Equal"! It's EXACTLY THE CONTRARY. So yeah.... Europeans also live in Dream Land!!! Just because things seem fine... Doesn't mean they are! It can mean the 'Calm before the Storm'... And you go look... How many European countries are under the 60% of Public Debt in their Economies.... Almost NONE!!! There's Germany and the Netherlands... That's IT!!!! 2 countries out of 25!!!! They all going ape sh*t with Immigration and Religion..... That's not serious people!!! That's not responsible people!!! The ship is sinking and they're talking about the sails... WTF. I'm worried about where should I swim!!!!! And here is a curious thing.... ALLLL the countries outside of the Euro have ridiculous low Debts!!! What the hell is that???! I also have seen enough of the world to smell bs... And I BET that manyyyyyy European countries cook their 'Economic Books' to make it look that they're doing good. France for example... Have you seen their retirement data??? They could raise the retirement age to 85 and wouldn't make a difference!!! That thing is BROKENNNNNN!!!!! In other words.... They'll have to work until they DIE basically!!!! France can say 'Au revoir Socialisme' already!... Sounds familiar??? Don't call Americans dumb bro!!! You may swallow your words and make a fool out of yourself. I could care less about Public Transport!!! It's good for short-medium travelling... But I'm not carrying my shopping on a bus or a train for example! So yeah... Americans are not that dumb!!! They're actually right about MANY things. In Europe we also have idiots that like Trump..... What does that tell you??!?? We also are going down that DUMB road!!!

There are some similarities between the current situation in the United States and the factors that contributed to the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. Here are a few: *Internal Similarities:* 1. Political polarization and division: Like Rome's factionalized senate, the US faces intense partisan divisions. 2. Corruption and influence of special interests: Similar to Rome's corrupt patronage system. 3. Economic inequality and stagnation: Mirror Rome's wealth disparities and economic troubles. 4. Decline of social cohesion and civic engagement: Erosion of community and shared values. 5. Over-reliance on debt and financialization: Similar to Rome's excessive spending and currency debasement. 6. Weakened institutions and rule of law: Erosion of trust in government, media, and institutions. *External Similarities:* 1. Rise of global competitors: China, India, and other nations challenge US dominance. 2. Global economic shifts: Trade tensions, supply chain disruptions, and emerging me's experience with barbarian tribes. *Key Differences:* 1. Global interconnectedness: Modern technology and globalization create new opportunities and challenges. 2. Democratic institutions: The US has a more robust democratic system than ancient Rome. 3. Economic resilience: The US economy has shown adaptability and resilience. 4. Military strength: The US maintains a powerful military, albeit with changing global threats. *Lessons from History:* 1. Address income inequality and promote economic mobility. 2. Strengthen institutions and rule of law. 3. Invest in education, innovation, and infrastructure. 4. Foster global cooperation and diplomacy. 5. Prioritize national unity and civic engagement. While the similarities are striking, the US has unique strengths and opportunities to address its challenges. By learning from history and adapting to changing circumstances, the US can mitigate potential risks and ensure continued prosperity.

And when we travel to other European countries, we carry the European health card and we can get assistance, free 100%. A couple of years ago I received chemio treatment for my leukaemia. I paid nothing in the hospital and nothing for the huge amount of medicines. No lux, but we have 1st class assistance thanks to top doctors, nurses, etc. Meanwhile, in the USA they prefer “freedom” to carry guns everywhere and a poor health assistance for most their population.

I know next to nothing about economics, or about Marx, but believe it or not, when "someone" blew up the Nordstream gas pipeline, delivering Russian gas to Western Europe countries, I just remembered the only thing that I know' what Marx said about the aggressive competition and ruthless fight between the capitalistic countries for the markets for their products. That explosion, which some say, that it was a deliberate action to stop Western Europe buying cheap Russian gas, and to force them to start buying American LNG delivered by ships, and at four times the price of Russian gas. In other words, Marx has said something like: It is easy to produce, but hard to sell. And that, sometimes, necessitate a "drastic" action.....

Dr Wolff, as always a very interesting and learned discussion. One term you used, "displaced persons" instantly carried me back 60+ years to the days when I would hear my folks talking about "DPs". Me being not even 10 years old, I had no idea who DPs were but there seemed to be plenty of them about :) I grew up in a county in S. Ontario which from the beginning was populated by German immigrants (the hochdeutsch speakers) and later by speakers of Pennsylvania Dutch so the area was known to be relatively welcoming to those displaced from Europe. Indeed, the family living directly across the street from me were "DPs" from Germany and of an age that the head of the household must of been in the German military but I never witnessed any animosity towards them from the community. Very different times!
