*could you survive a plane crash by jumping off at the last second to avoid the impact?* While jumping off right before impact could potentially save you from directly experiencing the explosion resulting from the crash, you would have to jump from no more than 10 meters high in order to land safely (assuming you are landing on a stone surface). However, assuming that the plane is going 30 meters / second, that only give you a third of a second to jump of right at the best moment. That’s about as fast as the snap of a finger. However, to know for sure if you could truly survive, you would have to consider that you aren’t just jumping off a 10m surface, as when you jump you are going as fast as the plane (obviously, there would be no time to open a parachute or anything of the sort in such a small window or time). Because when you touch down you reach a speed of 0 m/ sec, the gravitational force you would feel from the impact would add to the damage. Except that wasnt a realistic assumption. As you touch down on the ground, you would most likely roll a few meters before decelerating entirely. During that rolling, you would probably add injury to your already broken bones, as well as tearing you skin and muscles. Therefore the impact alone would be enough to kill you, but we aren’t done. The plane would just brake apart upon touchdown (which in itself could send debris flying off at extremely dangerous speeds); it would combust. If you jumped just 10m from the ground a third of a second before touchdown, there would be no avoiding the explosion. In a large commercial plane, that explosion could be comparable to that of WW1 mines (that’s a big explosion). Other than the extreme heats and force of the explosion, this would send off lots of debris, or shrapnel. Shrapnel is known to be as fast as bullets and, because of the odd shapes, the tear through skin in terrific ways. So even if you survive the impact, the explosion will surely finish you off. In conclusion, the answer to “could you survive a plane crash by jumping off at the last second to avoid the impact” is no, you certainly would not. I am open to arguments that could disprove my conclusion.
