Doesn’t surprise me tbh. The diss sounded half hearted and I didn’t think he believed most of the things he was saying at the time. Honestly he should’ve just dropped the project without the diss The most interesting part to me now is what will Kendrick do? Brush it off with a few bars? Ignore Cole completely? Or just bury him?

There’s a fine line of competition when there’s dissing involved because the disses can overstep personal boundaries in friendships and I think Cole realized when he dissed his discography, he overstepped. We all know Kendrick’s discography is top tier. Cole isn’t going to sell his soul and ruin a friendship for clout or because the fans want blood. Cole is better than that.

That said, I lost a lot of respect for him as a competitor in the game, because we know all that talk about wanting smoke and him being #1 is cap, and even he don't believe it. What he did was weak in the context of rap and competition, but incredibly brave as a man and especially a man in the industry. I applaud him for getting ahead of it before it got worse for him.

Bruh just imagine if Cole hadn’t apologized, and the beef continued with the big 3, I’m a huge Marvel/MCU/comic book fan and the analogy I thought of was about what we would’ve or could’ve witnessed and that’s a rap version of that scene from Captain America: Civil War with J. Cole as Captain America, Drake as The Winter Soldier/Bucky and Kendrick as Iron Man and Cap tells Iron Man that “Bucky is his friend” and Iron Man replies “I thought I was.” And the 2 vs. 1 showdown begins. Smh such a missed opportunity on Cole’s part, but I somewhat see why Cole bowed out last minute looking back months later.

I'm interested. People keep talking about competitive spirit but y'all are ok with Wayne saying he is the best on every record but backing down from a battle. Em says he's the best but praises the other top rappers in his era and never dissed them or went bar for bar. The only instances of the top rappers going head to head are when they have an actual misunderstanding or issue with each other. Kendrick and Cole clearly are cool with each other so why would they need to go back and forth on wax? We never have seen that happen before. The biggest back and forths in rap history were always between 2 rappers who were going back and forth because they actually didn't like each other and didn't know each other. Does that take away from any of the talk he said in his prior verses? If that didn’t really sit with his heart then I respect him talking to the audience directly. I think prior to all this he talked about being a grown family man in rap and not seeking drama in general. Seemed like he regrets letting himself get gassed by his peers to do something that wasn’t in his heart to do. Sad one for the fans but he damn near 40 with two kids and leads a pretty stable lifestyle. Is there space for someone like that in Hip Hop? And if there isn’t what does that say for Hip Hop?

I don't think so. I think push come to shove if Kendrick still drops a diss, J Cole will still respond to it. I just think he responded cuz he was in the middle of a roll out and on tour and Kendrick's diss pissed him off, so he wrote something in the heat of the moment, but then reflected and realized that he and Dot dont really got beef anyway. It's Dot and Drake that have the beef. Some real disrespectful shit is finna be said on both sides, and J Cole being cool with both of em is opting out. Kinda like when you have two friends that are arguing and you start to pick a side, but then the other one does something petty, and you're kinda just like, "Aight, yall figure that shit out." Cole got caught up in Drake’s mess. He knows it was always supposed to be him and Kendrick. Second I felt Cole’s diss was underwhelming from the start and this explains why. He had too many untruths as far as the discography and saying they wouldn’t be discussing if Kendrick hadn’t been dissing when they launched First Person Shooter. Dot was minding his business and simply responded. It would have been dope to see him spar for a little longer. I think doing it in a way where it didn’t get disrespectful and it was sticking to skill and GOAT talk only, would’ve challenged Cole to get creative. I’ve been saying since Like That dropped, Kendrick just responded to Cole vs. taking aim at Drake.

Nice take. No bias felt. Professional take and fair assessment. I’ve been a Cole fan ever since hearing sideline story and dollar and a dream. He to me is In a different lane then what most mainstream people will see. 7 min drill felt different because that ain’t him. He to me is different to all rappers and uniquely tells stories from a more compassionate and hopeful side. E.g Niki Minaj recent ft along with his audio hug to Mrs walker. Promoter of peace and unification. To me he sometime feel like he on some Bob Marley and Lauren Hill lane. But that’s how I view him. The Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill of Rap stands alone as number 1 in his own space. My top 3 overall in my rap game now.

We all bit disappointed cause we wanted a battle, i understand cole tho, especially when he f with kendrick , his only mistake is dropping a disstrack , he fell under pressure of whole world , it was an ego fight, so definitely i agree it wasn’t easy for him to say that in front the world. He took an L in rap game but got huge W in human growth terms

This is my first time ever seen one of your videos are coming across your channel and you have the best take on what happened J Cole has the same birthday that my son has and my heart was broken when I heard this man back down to Kendrick. Because Kendrick seems to be one punch man I'm getting real f****** tired of people not going at him like they should but I really didn't want it to be J Cole either J Cole is actually better than Kendrick and Drake combined because he can take both of their Styles and murder them with it but I don't think he knows that.

And i agree with your sentiment on 7 minute Drill. Its like when you cook for your family but you are just too tired. They feel it. I don’t look at Cole no way. Even though us real music lovers/Hip Hop heads wanted a exclusive freestyle or something of the sort at Dreamville Fest. Always loved J. Cole because he’s transparent unlike Drake who’s just the opposite imo. Drake is the big fish that Kendrick wants. Even though J. Cole has been taking shots while standing next to Drake. You can’t throw rocks then hide ya hands. This doesn’t change Cole’s legacy at all to me. If people can look past the weak ish Drake do I don’t wanna hear fickle fans even try it with Cole. Want to first say great video again. I’m really enjoying these. This is going to be a long comment so want to say Cole is my favorite artist. I love Kendrick too but Iv always been more partial and biased towards Cole. That to say this is the first time ever im like “yo wtf Cole”. Here is how Iv seen it. Cole has been top of the game the last few years. If you wanna debate that go ahead but his pen/lyrics have been elite. I’m talking feature run, the off season, and with might delete later like it’s crazy fireee. So Cole claiming he the “numero uno” right now not only what rappers do but totally legit. The Kendrick like that verse again to me came out of nowhere and I didn’t get the shots at Cole which there definitely was. So Cole in album mode and I think coulda just ignored it if he wanted to and just put out his music and let that speak for itself on how crazy elite his rhymes are right now. Once he drops 7 minute drill though like you have to stand on that. He doesn’t owe his fans anything but WE BEEN saying and showing anyone who will listen that Cole’s the best in the game the last few years and the proof is in his verses and projects (all facts). So why does he get an unprovoked shot from Kendrick then do a very rational thing and do a diss/warning shot back and feel HE has to apologize when Kendrick popped this whole thing off. What really is annoying me is if this is how he feels, which I’m sure it is, and you already dropped the diss then I’d rather see a “yea this was just a rap thing no beef we boys and I’m just honestly not with going back and forth with my boy so I’m out” I defffffff didn’t need the “Kendrick one of the best to ever do it shit” Cole always hypes up Kendrick and it’s cool him respecting him but in this moment don’t do that man. Still a huge Cole fan and I’m gonna be replaying Might delete later non stop and can’t wait for the Fall off and all the best rapper alive talk cause I still think he can claim it. But damn he left his fans open for so much bullshit on this

Rob I love your well rounded points of view. We all have inherent bias and like what we like. There is and never will be a universal best in this art for. It is purely subjective. There has always been room for spirited competition especially as there are people who are better in certain technical aspescts of the craft than others whether it be wordplay, rhyme schemes, unique words used, approach to storytelling. Concsiousness or vulnerability, transperency. I jave slight push back and disagreement at being overtly bragadocio but not wanting to bring smoke where it has been levied upon you. For sureskies it's easier to talk about hyperbolic threats or opps or whatever but his feature run and verses been elevated so it will be difficult to hear that King, GOAT, God talk from him for a while. I respect Cole as the man he represents himself to me. Honestly that was the most mild peice of rapping on wax beef I ever remember, and I don't just mean by way of popular or mainstream emcees. I believe both Cole and Kendrick are greats, and legends and alongside Drake, K.R.I.T anybody else they all deserve to exist and garner as much support as hearts their music can speak to. It just feels a little ironic and disengenuin to claim the top spot, or say I've chased it for uears it don't matter no more and then when someone challenges that (friend or not) I'm not with it. I don't like violence and am tired to the disproportionate numbers of homicide in the rap community, but they never said each other's names. K Dot mainly came at Drake with Cole catching strays for teaming up and his big 3 line but saying he's numero uno and Muhammad Ali. I like that Cole's the people's champ. I don't think Kendrick's verse, by way of diss was all too hard and hope however it all shakes out they all continue forging their paths and dominating the lanes they set up for themselves.

You made some valid points however my problem with j Cole and the unnamed is that some of the stuff Cole says can clearly be attributed to someone or someone can take it that way. Another thing is Nas clearly doesn’t perform ether anymore cause he no longer stands by that record. Cole could’ve took that route. He could’ve simply deleted the record quietly and moved on. I think if the response to the record was different he wouldn’t have been affected by it. Last thing I don’t want to hear anymore I’m the best or if a rapper would bars from when the opportunity is there to match up with your closest peer was there and you ran from it.
