Looking it up on IMDB, director Jose Padilha did not have a fun time directing. He wanted to make the movie a certain way but the studio kept enforcing their demands (Padilha wanted the movie R-rated but the studio forced it to be pg-13). Because of this, Padilha was incredibly blue because he felt his vision was harvested away from him, which led to the working title being blue harvest

Original recipe 'RoboCop' was a near-perfect movie that worked on a bunch of different levels, so this remake had an uphill battle from the start. Having said that, I think all involved took a pretty good crack at it, in terms of casting, the themes it tackled and in the way it differentiated itself from the original (this time, Murphy is clearly a living person trapped inside a robot body he doesn't always have full control over, whereas in the original it was kind of hinted at that RoboCop might just be a machine that mistakenly started to think it was a man because of some leftover memories in its organic components, which were harvested from the body of a dead policeman ... hence its original working title, 'Blue Harvest'). There's a lot to like about this remake, but it was never going to live up to the original.

That was the one thing I think this movie almost got right: contrasting the War on Terror international military occupation "policing" with policing economically-depressed crime-ridden Detroit. If there are people that need to realize stuff it needs to be studio heads. Every time a movie like this flops they go to the director and the vast majority of replies is studio interference. You also don't expect it here because his face and helmet look very "human". His eyes aren't covered. His skin tone looks healthy. He just looks like a guy in a motorcycle helmet. When Alex Murphy took off his visor in the original he looked ghastly. His skin was stretched taut across a hardware armature and fixed with bolts and wires. It was obvious from day one that he was a robot with a bit of flesh grafted on. I really can't blame Remake Robo for thinking he was in a suit.

@lisah-p8474 The original dealt really well with the "just a brain and some organs" idea without really showing it and leaving it to the imagination with the "build" scene from his perspective. I originally didn't give this movie a chance because I don't think they should be remaking classics and I expected it to just be a lame updated action movie with bad CGI. But eventually I ended up borrowing a Blue Ray copy off a friend and honestly, it was a far better film than I’d anticipated with a much more nuanced story. Yes, it had better special effects, but it wasn't all CGI action, and what CGI there was was extremely well done, especially the scene where they strip away all his parts to reveal that the only organs they’d harvested were his lungs and hand. This was probably why the original title was initially going to be Blue Harvest which coincidentally was also the working title for the 1977 film Star Wars.

It's interesting to note that the original Robocop was also meant to fast and nimble like this one in the remake. But because the suit was bulky and heavy, Peter Weller and his mime coach had to quickly change his movements into more slower movements like what we ended up seeing in the original.

I really felt like the soul of the original movie was killed by corporate tinkering in the remake. Not that the actors did a bad job, or the outfit designers, or the CGI engineers. It's just so soulless, safe, and doesn't point enough fingers at corporate greed and shortcomings.

The scene showing he's just a face with a sack of organs has always stuck with me. The orginal had a blood bath of killing but that scene just hits different because it makes you think about at what point are you still your human self if pieces of you are stripped away and replaced with robotics. Maybe it's a little too real for most people in comparison to the original with bloody killings, a guy getting his dick shot off and a guy getting wrecked by toxic waste.

Nah. This is what "update for modern audiences" should mean. It makes sense enough, and it poses a lot of good questions about what we are as humans and biological computers. Do we react, and then invent a reason why we acted? Are we in control, or are we simply pretending? Is it partial or total? Yea. It is a good movie, and everyone should think it is. Except the black suit. That was a face-slap moment.

The remake is a solid movie on it's own terms. It has more on its mind than many other tentpoles we get today. I also think it's a bit unfair to hold it up against it's powerhouse classic progenitor, because it was never the intention to emulate Verhoeven's film, not in style nor tone. The remake is not a comic book or a satirical romp. It's more Robocop by way of Black Mirror. It's focus is on the science of the fiction and the inhumanity behind it that clashes with the heart and human spirit of man. I get that it was hampered by studio meddling, but Pedilha imo still pulled off a worthwhile film that stands on its own. No need to find Verhoeven's film inside a remake that wasn't trying to be that.

Ironically I think this films downfall is the fact that it’s not terrible or great? It’s the one thing you don’t want for your film: mediocre at best. It instantly relegates this to being forgotten. Plus not only does the black ruin the iconic look of the character but their incessant need to show his full face makes it feel like he’s just a special forces soldier in a suit, not THE iconic film cyborg that Robo-Cop is.

This review is so bang-on for my own feelings when this came out. Not at all a bad movie, moments and seeds of really great ideas that expanded or went in different, interesting directions than the original, but none of which felt fully executed and the humorous satire was sorely missed (though arguably wouldn't work anyway without the over-the-top violence as counter-balance). The PG-13 rating and weird shitting on the OG design were nail in the coffin ideas for sure. It's too bad this movie happened pre-Deadpool, I think this same script now would've been executed much better. Hopefully these new projects follow the lead of Rogue City and don't disappoint.

Gary Oldman's filmography is bizarrely amazing. He has one of the widest ranges (the widest?) of any actor his generation. Behold the variety of accents and personas: Stephen Frears' "Prick Up Your Ears" Oliver Stone's "JFK" Tony Scott's "True Romance" Peter Medak's "Romeo is Bleeding" Christopher Nolan's "Batman" films Francis Ford Coppola's horny "Dracula" David Fincher's "Mank" Alex Cox's "Sid and Nancy" the "Harry Potter" films It goes on and on...Gary Oldman is an actor who _does not_ play versions of himself film-after-film (like too many other film actors.) And what I particularly love about Oldman is he is not matinee-idol handsome. He is a perfect example of an actor who succeeds not because he's pretty, but because he's insanely gifted.

Slight tangent on the Assassin's Creed movie as a huge fun of the games: such a missed opportunity. I know that the modern day storyline with Abstergo is also a part of the games, but the reason you play an AC title is to parkour through old cities and meet historical figures, and the movie had to dedicate so much time to setting up the Abstergo stuff at the expense of seeing an Assassin story during the Spanish Inquisition. By the movie had come out, even the games had started deemphasizing the modern storylines (it's still there, but you can usually ignore it), and I think that a better way to set it up may have been to start the movie with like a corporate play testing of the new Abstergo AC game (which they started having be an in-game thing around AC III Liberation I believe), and then have some hackers get into the system and take the protagonist into the un-sanitized version of their ancestor's journey. Saying it out loud, I'm realizing how could kind of be a Robocop-esque commentary on the way history is often rewritten or suppressed by big institutions to justify their own power...plus parkour and Ben Franklin.

Watching this movie, I feel like the director was trying to make a statement about how hollywood reanimates franchises and they’re so far removed from themselves. I think this is a really good and underrated remake, the climax feels a bit to “video game cut scene”, and Michael Keaton‘s villain turn doesn’t make much sense, but I like what they explored with Robocop‘s family (that felt different and fresh), it has a great cast & performances, and all the stuff with prosthetic and Murphy seeing what’s left with his body was very scary, tragic, and interesting at the same time.

I loved how this movie did something different with loss of identity. OG Robocop starts out thinking he's definitely Robocop and slowly realizes he's Murphy, more or less. I liked this focusing on Murphy realizing that he's not actually entirely Murphy anymore, he's a composite being with Murphy's memories. They could have done more with it, but I was happy to see them working in the speculative fiction side of sci-fi.
