I think people dump on this movie because it's a piece of feel-good Americana that whitewashes a lot of the unsavory parts in US History. I love this movie and from a technical point of view it's really impressive what they've done as a showcase for creative film making. However i think the central messaging and perspective of the film no longer hold up, especially viewed retrospectively. It's one of the few films where it's not so much dated by its visuals but rather its rosy view of the American dream.

yeah this is a pretty terrible take, Riley really tries to hard to be contrary sometimes. see corridor crew, actual VFX artists discussing this specific scene, highlighting how well it was done.

@@kingkarlito no, I mean it doesn't hold up. And I don''t think any of the corridor crew people have every worked in a studio for vfx, just doing their own things. I've seen some of their commentaries, and I eye roll. When they have real vfx people on it is quite interesting.

14:55 Riley. This wasn't 3D, this was all 2D compositing. (Well, I can't speak to every shot, but the boat shot almost definitely was.) They either had a plate/photo of the boat without the hole. Or they just copied a section of the boat that didn't have the hole and patched it over the hole. Track/match move it in and the hole is gone. Then key out the legs and paint in the background (again, same idea, take from earlier frames or later frames to create a clean plate, track it in and put it over where the legs were... in simple vague terms.)

The wide shots of Forrest Gump running where you don't see his face are reshoots and aren't Tom Hanks but are his brother instead. Apparently the Hanks men have a goofy ass run that no one else can do so they had to get his brother since his schedule conflicted. In fact, his brother does all the stuff where you don't see Tom Hanks' face in the properties he's involved in like being the voice of Woody for Toy Story merchandise and videogames and TV shows.

I think maybe the flashbacks where he was involved in these historical events are more impactful on Americans because these are all huge events that we learn about growing up that have huge importance to us.

About Jenny and the debate whether she's using him. This is a woman who was abused by her father, who has spent her life looking for some meaning to it. She returns to Forrest at the lowest point in her life, and it would have been so easy for her to stay. He was already rich by then from the Shrimping business. But she left. And I think that must have taken a lot of courage. To leave when she was most vulnerable, with no one else to count on. I think she didn't feel she was worthy of being with him. We see in the time he spends running, she turns her life around. She gets a job, raises a child by herself. And she only reaches out again when she finds out she's dying.

I think Riley kind of hit on this but there is an accepted flip you can do with a character in a story where instead of them having an arc the arc is the rest of the world they affect. So in this case Forrest is not changing but he's changing the people and world around him. Paddington 1 & 2 are similar.

Do love Forrest Gump, but something that always bugged me is the Oscar win. Especially when Shawshank redemption, and Pulp fiction were released the same year, and imo were more iconic / groundbreaking films.

Agree 100%. Anyone that was a film nerd at the time felt the same (that I knew). I mean, we liked Forest Gump, but it felt like navel gazing and true Boomeritis that it won (i.e. we are the best gen and our memories trump any other content). I'm gen x for context, and I love my Boomer parents, but the power of the boomer gen has been very detrimental in our late-stage capitalistic phase we seem to be heading through. Glad that millennials finally surpassed them in total population but the boomers still dominate due to voting power and capital.

Every little detail of this movie makes it sound weirder. Like it's a romance but also a war movie and one of the main characters runs across the country for some reason and now one of the characters went through a drug phase? I don't know how all of this fits in the time of a movie

This might get heavy but as someone that had his mom died of aids, this movie always hit me hard, the commentary on the 60's seems genuine while not on the level of Mr Gonzo, still it's put well enough as an odyssey that I think the movie works very well

I always watch with such disdain for Jenny. She used Forrest all through out her adult life all the way to end and completely robs Forrest by not letting him know his son until she knew she was going to die and needs someone to watch/raise her son. Infancy bonding is an important part imo and he doesn't get the chance. Love the movie though so good.
