Not sure if you mean specifically a humanoid robot or mecha in general in a live action movie. Either way 1918's The Master Mystery seems to be the first use of a robot in film through the form of Q The Automaton, although it's nothing like Pacific Rim which takes HEAVY inspiration from the Giant Robot animes of 1970's like Mazinger Z. They even go so far as to pay direct homage to some of the animes that inspired it, which is amazing, but that's to be expected when Guillermo del Toro is involved with something. Interestingly enough he concept seems to have been first introduced in Edward S. Ellis' novel "The Steam Man of The Prairies" all the way back in 1868. /end nerd rant

Robot Jox would have been a classic like Robocop if it had a bigger budget. The movie's amazing for what they had to work with. Also, Athena was incredibly hot.

I think the corny dialogue and awkward stereotypes are the biggest hangups of the movie. _Robot Jox_ had a lot of topics it could have explored, but it either quickly brushes past them (ex: the morality of raising soldiers from birth that are never exposed to society at-large) or says nothing at all (ex: actively promoting pregnancy, illiteracy in the 21st Century, flying cars). With some love and narrowing down its focus- and, of course, acknowledgement of predeceding Bayformers and _PacRim-_ I think that _Robot Jox_ could be successfully be rebooted into something viable; alternatively a sequel that acknowledges the past movie as history but doesn't lean upon the flaws of it.

I Guess Titanfall 2 and the Lost Planet games can be your jam too since those have cool mechs as well, and if You want something free to play that isn't the usual Battle Royale, Hawken is definitely the top choice since battles can get intense there, just ignore some of the players since some of them are kind of jerks on the microfone.

This still is pretty original and interesting universe. In every postapocalyptic movie/game there is no functional society. In this one they outlawed war, encourage you to have sex and there are giant robots that are being used for both entertainment and to resolve disputes over the land/resources. And they still have beer! What could be better ? :) Also reminds me of Battletech quite a lot. I would love to see more based on this franchise. Movie, TV-show, video game - anything ! Btw music in this movie was amazing as well. And that ending is the best thing ever!

Man, I must have seen this probably 25 years ago growing up in Europe. I had a parabolic dish, and when I say I captured 1000's of global channels, I mean, I had enough TV to watch in one day to last somebody else 10 lifetimes. Anyway, seeing how your channel's review of this cult gem is bringing back nostalgic memories, I recall coming back from school one day, dumping my backpack and slouching on the chair, putting my feet up on the corner of the desk, and turning on the TV, surfing back and forth. Then, all of a sudden, I turn to Robot Jox, from the beginning of the movie! I was hooked! The first and only time I ever watched it, but it stayed with me. Only 15 years later did I learn Joe Haldeman wrote it. Yes, the same dude who wrote The Forever War. Mindblown all over again.
@yellow_carsupreme56062 жыл бұрын
Should have had $5m added to the budget for effects and had Paul Verhoven direct with the Robocop satire infusion. Would have been hilarious is they had some big 1980s A-List actor be the doomed RobotJox at the beginning. Like Stallone and just pay him a few thousand for 1 days work, but put his name on the poser.

One of the clerks, the owners son, one time when I was returning it, he said to me, "Ya know Darren, if it wasn't for you, this movie would never get rented out." I'd like to add, the same was true for their copies of Puppet Master 1-6. Thank you for doing a video on one of my teenage favorites. Oh, also....I too played ShadowRun, but only on SNES & Genesis. I did however play Battletech on PC. It installed to DOS! Ha! Then years later, played the CRAP outta MechWarrior: Mercenaries. Good call on this one, guys!

I watched this flick just once, on video in the mid-90's, and I swear that during the fight scene between Achilles and Athena, not only was there a quick shot of Athena's male stunt double, as you point out, but the stuntman also had a moustache or beard or both, which made the shot even more noticeable and hilarious. I think the version presented here must have been a re-shoot, though I can't fathom the producers would have spent the money on it. Still, I remember it that way and I had a witness too. Thanks for sharing!

Exactly. I think there are so many avenues they could have gone with but the studio went bankrupt trying to do just the giant robot angle. This is one I wouldn't mind being remade as long as they expanded on some of the topics you mentioned. Oh, and as long as Bay stays far, far from the production. Also, they should go miniatures instead of CGI but that is highly doubtful.
