Krull is a grand mix of fantasy and scifi that doesn't come around too often. A film overflowing with ideas that could have filled 3 movies.

As well as the nostalgic joy of (SPOILER ALERT!) that catchy "Nestle Alpine White" commercial jingle at 5:12, which I recall someone aptly describing it as "a Calvin Klein ad for candy bars set to the best single Roxette never recorded."

I used to love this movie when I was a kid (still do) and now as an adult I understand that a big part of that was because of it's beautiful sets and costume design, as well as for some solid cinematic and good acting (Freddie Jones and David Battley in particular). It's unusual and bizarre and I love it all the more for it.

I always liked the story of the cyclops.. he knew his fate lied with the band of heroes and knew how he was to die, is why he hung around them it was his destiny to die helping them. Yet when it came to fulfilling his destiny and accepting his death that was foreseen, he told Colwin that his time to die had come but it was elsewhere and tried to escape it only to come back and help them get into the castle and get crushed to death. In a way, the beast deal with the cyclops helped to seal his own fate by allowing the cyclops' to see into the future even if it was only seeing their deaths..

Ok I’m 11 years late, but this movie was on constant replay in my house in the ‘80’s from the wherehouse. I love it so much, esp since as a 6 year old girl, I loved horses. The stampede of clydesdales with fire hooves was amazing. And I cried every time the old man gets killed and is replaced by a monster.

*KRULL* is one of my favorite movies. I even own a copy. One of the very few I do own. The notion of The Beast landing on Earth and being confronted by the US military is amusing.. squadrons of A-10 Warthogs attacking the Fortress while a couple of tank divisions hit it from the ground -- yeah!

MARSHOMEWORLD ... You tried to write intelligently, and almost succeeded. It's strange that you have not looked at your comment in three years and thought to yourself, 'Geez, I sure screwed that up.' Then, all you needed to do to correct it is edit out the word "being" and then zip out the C in the misspelling of SORCERER. Those tiny changes would give your statement credibility.

One thing that never sat right with me was where did the cyclops come from? The fact that Ynyr knew of his kind suggested they were native to Krull, but if the cyclops were native to Krull, why was he such a mystery to the others? Also, Ynyr said that all cyclops suffered the same curse which suggests their deal with the Beast happened a very long time ago. My point is, I don't think cyclops were from Krull and that begs the questions, "How long had the Beast been on Krull and were the cyclops even from Krull?" This film needed a lot more backstory and history to really explain how it got to where the film takes place.

The problem with the movie is that it's all over the place and it doesn't really have any real focus to it. As you said, it's ambitious, but its ambitious in all the wrong ways. It has all the elements it needs to be a great movie, but it's mostly overkill. Star Wars had a singular focus on Luke, Han, and Leia. Krull tried to introduce so many elements that it needed a lot more time to flesh out those elements. Krull needed to rewritten to generate a new macguffin, and reduce the focus significantly. My suggestion would be the following. Colywn and Ellisa escape from the invasion at the Castle and are hunted. They meet up with the Bandits who have captured the Cyclops, and Ynyr is the leader. The MacGuffin is the glaive to which Colywn gets and the Beast wants. The glaive is a weapon he can use to rule. The blade doesn't work with Colywn yet because Colywn isn't "ready". The glaive is sentient. And so on and so on. This treatment has the focus on the glaive, not on the beast and Ellisa which didn't work and the boring globetrotting of the group. It turns into a cat and mouse movie which is all it should have been.

I think this film has great potential. It just has a lot of script problems. Why doesn't the Beast just take off? How long had he been there? Why doesn't he use the Glaive instantly? The bandits are developed enough, there is great potential there. Rell is the best defined character and the most interesting. I think it could be done well as a remake. Punch up the script, develop the characters more, set the story more. But I still really enjoy this film.

Oh and @goodbadflicks, please do one for american warships, it is ok, the story is fine, but the low budget makes some of the scenes ridiculous, they are supposedly on the USS Iowa, but they are on the USS North Carolina during filming, you can tell because the NC is the only blue painted battleship still in existence. Also, they still make the 16-inch shells, and would have armed the Iowa incase of attack on its final voyage. Also, all of the Anti-Aircraft guns were taken off, making the scene where they shoot missiles down with 40mm Bofors.

It really is too bad that this movie flopped. It is amazing! But premiering 3 days after "Return of the Jedi" was just suicidal! Once again bad marketing and douche bag "suits" fuck over a beautiful piece of art! It seems kind of unfair that the slayers have laser weapons while the people of Krull have only medieval weapons. With the only exception being the glave and fire power. This does deserve some sort of sequel. Your idea sounds AMAZING.
