Hi Robot, I'm a very proud 2004 Vespa GT owner from Italy. I agree with you on the fuel lines replacement: I did it, but it's no big deal. Carburator need some attention on the fuel needle replacement (the lower one) as it degrades easily with age. The clock battery replacement is a real pain: when i did it i soldered an external cable and put a battery pack (2 AA batteries) in the small left box over the glove box, so next time batteries will go dead i'll replace them without wrenching around There are a lot of videos about that and I think it's a must-have. Thanks for your video, as an Italian Vespa owner and enthusiast it's funny to hear about Vespa in USA. Ciao dall'Italia.

Signor, I laughed when I read your comment about Vespa in the USA! My first motor vehicle was a 1959 Vespa 150/4 spd that I purchased in 1963. I was 15. Now I am 74 and have sold all my motorcycles. Guess what I'm looking at now! Yes, a Vespa!

I have a speculation that the ones made for Italian market are a bit better in quality? What do you think? I have an old Italy imported Vespa LX with cca 50k kilometers, and non of the fuel lines are deteriorating and it's with an electric fuel pump, not vacuum operated like what I've seen on ScooterWest videos. Also the carburator has a TPS sensor from the factory and some weird solenoid on the airbox that I don't know what's it for...

Just to add a little bit of value to this video.....great video but I think this is a tad harsh on the GT200. For a complete new model they pretty much hit the ground running. Also prices for these early GT200 are on the rise as the first of the modern large frame Vespas...they do have a beautiful look about them, very pure look about them, modern yet retro at the same time...and last of the DUY friendly Vespas. There are still seemingly gazillions of these GTs in everyday use in Italy and our Italian 🇮🇪mechanics prefer working on these to the newer GTS series which appear to have a bit of value engineering in them, the build quality on the GT200 is so much better, more proper metalwork, less Chinese OEM content, more steel and less plastics, and the plastics are tougher too, the GT200 series crash better😊 Basically the later GTS models are the same bike as the GT200, many parts are interchangeable. There are plenty about with over 50k on original engines, guy on Modern Vespa forum has two over 80k,one has 100k, original engines but correctly serviced. Most problems are down to poor maintenance by unsympathetic and uncaring owners, use over winter on salted roads without regular cleaning. These GT200s are still a great Vespa, they have very sparkly performance indeed at 22bhp as no emissions after treatment, old school carburetor which is both a minus and a plus, no rev limiter too, to me the Gts300 feels little faster off the mark and the GT200 has genuine 80mph top end. Great handling chassis, sharp brakes too. Basically to keep these as a reliable ride is very simple indeed, just preventitive maintenance....change out all vacuum and fuel lines if over 5 years, as you would any scooter, strip and clean brakes every few years, change brake lines, rears fail quicker due to exhaust heat and brake lever goes soft, feels like air in system, again, same as any bike, strip and clean carbs every few years. Talking of carbs, same carb as Gt125 but different jetting and the 125cc is easy to buy new at £140 new, the gt200 is three times more for some reason? New venturi diaphragm if over 10 years old as they eventually perish and as Robot says the slide can break but only on Walbro carbs, the Keihin version doesn't in my experience, ll. Both very simple carb to work on. Keihin was the carb of the two, early models can be either carb, before Piaggio went to Keihin only from 05 onwards. Diaphragm age failure is common to Honda and Harleys which both use the Cvk carb..to be honest any cv carb. Cdi can be changed out for a pattern £50 after market part, which removes immobiliser and no rev limiter as original. NB 2003 models have one piece exhaust which means whole exhaust has to come off for wheel removal. Careful when removing nuts from exhaust studs, there is enough room to get a blow torch on them, but need to take care. Vintage Verde like this model probably the best colour for resale, classic Vespa colour.

Hey, Robot, love your informative videos. I have a 2006 gt200 that got motor reconned at about 80k km. Replaced water pump and few hoses.Ride it at least twice a week and still a dream to ride at 118k km (73k miles!) Mostly modified by previous owner (heated grips, Gianelli muffler, summer and winter windshields, crash bars and licence plate holder from a visit to Scooter West a few years back)

I am working on one for a friend of mine. I was removing the carb to clean the jets because the scooter had been sitting for about 8 months. I actually just kept all the linkage and fuel line hooked up. I removed it from the intake and airbox boots and flipped it upside down to remove the bottom of the carb. The pilot jet was clogged and the main jet was clear. You are right about the fuel lines drying out and needing to be replaced. As soon as i turned the carb upside down the inlet fuel line broke off because it was dry and brittle. The scooter runs great and is smooth riding and fast ( 80 mph ). It is kinda wide and heavy but that may contribute to it's smooth overall ride. All and all this is a very solid good looking and fun to ride scooter. I highly recommend buying one of these if you can't afford a new one.....(who doesn't like to save money ? )

I have a 2004 GT 200 in silver that I've owned for 14 years. Only done 5000 miles and it's always garaged. Have just had the fueling and ignition systems fully overhauled, and a second new ignition switch, following on from when it started to intermittently cut out during a long ride. Not 100% sure it has solved the problem! Thanks for the videos Robot Best wishes from the south west of England.

Robot, your presentation is great but the final impressions (stated), true as they may be from your viewpoint, sort of deflated my ego and proud ownership of my 2005 200 GTS. Had I known when I bought it, what I know now, I might have passed the eBay auction by. I have not ridden it since 2017 because of other demands of my time. The latest project Ive been doing for it is upgrading the lighting to LED's. Once I get it back together I want to ride in our town in north central Arkansas. You are right about the difficult access for clock battery but I got it done. I enjoy your videos and encourage you to keep up the good work.

I'm a happy owner of a 2007 GT200 (gifted to me from a dear friend). I've done a couple of minor servicing items on it, but mechanically is still sound. I had a small accident with it a few weeks ago and now sport a large sized scrape on the right rear fender. The foot pad trim piece was also messed up from the fall but Robot's video on replacing that made it simple to fix.

How fortuitous a video: on Saturday I rode from central NJ into Brooklyn on my '15 GTS300 Super, and when I reached my destination, happened to park right next to a GT200 that had "seen some years", with its owner working on it. We had a chat (at a safe distance, of course), and he told me he'd only had it for just under a week, and that while it *did* run, it certainly needed work. Sounds like he more-or-less knew what he was in for, and I wished him the best of luck with it. Most people I know who own 200s are fiercely loyal to them. That said, I'm happy I got my GTS new. ;-)

Robot, Thank you for a current view on this modern classic. I had one of these when they were relatively new to the US in 2004. Rode a ton and enjoyed greatly. Obviously, being a new scooter there were none of the concerns that you point out as it being a twenty year old scooter. I sold that one many moons ago and have been looking for another 200 / 250 / 300. I'm glad you point out maintenance issues, as the number one thing I see is people who have a low mile scooter who think just because it has 936 miles on it that it's worth 3/4 of a new Vespa. I do many dumb things, but I am not willing to risk riding on 20 year old tires, even if not cracking. Deferred maintenance is such an issue with these bikes and the current owners who have let them sit for years and years take offense when you point out the obvious. It makes a new / newer 300 tempting from this perspective alone. Thanks for the videos on both the Vespas and the Royal Alloy. Have enjoyed watching and learning and hopefully have another sooner than later.

*I come to this channel regularly and I wanted to say that. I am an obsessed fan of riding. Obsess to the point of watching riding videos a lot. I am deciding what motorcycle or scooter to buy next. And what I wanted to say is that I see SO MANY reviews videos in this platform where people are so SO SO salty. Reviews videos that people feel the need to trash machines or taste on machines that are not theirs. But this guy can create a review video without trashing anyone or anything. I like that and I respect that. Thanks, dude, love your videos. I love the Vespa brand too.*

Nice overview. I will say I *was* a tad curious about the early 200's when I started seriously looking for a scoot in mid-2015...but also think I made a good choice in buying a floor-model 2015 GTS 300 later that year. And, while I sort-of grok your feelings about small-vs-large-frame Vespas, I'll take my GTS over *any* maxi-scoot any day that ends in "y." The GTS is still more agile and nimble in traffic than most any of these MCs-in-scoot-clothing, yet I can still hang with most of the big dogs on the slabs.

Unfortunately the GTS is a computer on wheels, definitely not something I'm interested in. I also have a 1979 P200E and a 2009 Genuine Stella 150. Both manual shift 2 strokes. I got my 2006 GT200 because I'm getting older, and while I still enjoy riding the old vintage scooters, I wanted something more comfortable with a CVT, but NO EFI.

Same story with et4 leader engines, fuel lines, fuel tap dead and carb issues, does gt have mechanical water pump or electrical, any other differences with et4 leader engine apart from I'm assuming gearing, could you fit GT200 barrel and head on et4 125 or is asking for a shed load of trouble and a 150 barrel or 177 malossi kit would be better, got a few to play with, as et4s so cheap now, last one cost me £26, new tires too. Gillera runner vxr are leader engine easier to get parts exhausts etc, think they would fit ok they sell 125 CDI on eBay from £15 works fine on et4 i believe

I’m currently considering a 2005 Vespa gt200 which has some decent modifications - 21.6K kilometres with full service history - I’m the type of guy who likes to fuel up and ride into the wind - I also don’t mind the simple routine changing of the service items however cleaning out carburettors and replacing fuel lines is where I draw the line - a bit of a shame really because this particular scooter does look like it has been cherished and well maintained

Great video. Hope you can answer me before i make a mistake, lol. I currently ride a 2003 ET4 and love it! But I am have posted it for sale in order to purchase a 2004 GT200 like the one you are showing. When I purchased my ET4, I cleaned the carb because it was dirty and changed the fuel lines because they leaked. Do you recommend the upgrade to the GT200? I don’t mind cleaning the carb and hanging out lines. Which would be more reliable in the long run? Thanks!

Hard question to answer...it really depends on the condition of each scooter and what your intended use is. They are of the same generation of Vespa, so the reliability is comparable between the two. Hmm, so I’m stuck. There is a 200 near me, well cared for, stored indoors, 2006 with 6000 miles. It is in my price range at around 2,800. So, I’m wondering if it is a terrible decision to purchase?

Well....I bought the 200, drove 20-25 miles home in Michigan winter (thankfully no snow,) and did a brief winterization. I will look at replacing all fuel lines/vacuum hoses and tap in the spring. I loved the ride! Can’t wait till spring!

@@randykaminski6214 How’s it going with the scooter? I’m in the same position you were. A 200 with under 1K miles for 3 grand. I just don’t know if I scan handle the maintenance. If Robot says it’s difficult, I probably don’t want to mess with it

I haven’t replaced everything yet, but did replace the CDI with Malossi CDI, and this is easy-very very easy. I believe the new CDI improves the stock set-up. I did order the Variator belt/rollers/slides, and have heard that is not difficult. I also have the new oil, filter, and gear oil-this should not be difficult. After looking at the vacuum and gas lines, it does not look really hard-so far.....- I have not ordered tires yet, and will probably need to order a water pump and hoses also. It sounds like a lot, but I think it’s just a matter of getting it done.. On the positive, I think it is rewarding, and the 200 is a well made scooter, but I’m not absolutely positive that I would go this route again... Negative: all the items that are needed are adding up in cost and I’m don’t think I’ll get the money I put into it, out of it. Mine is the Black color and this is the least desirable for me. I’m still looking with envy at the 300’s..
