One advantage of step-through scooters (and Vespas in particular) revolves around safety, which was proven to me two nights ago, when, while riding to a restaurant to meet my wife to celebrate her Birthday, I was broadsided by a motorist hard enough to knock me unconscious: I don't remember the moment of impact, likely because I didn't see what hit me…the next thing I remember after turning the corner was being lifted onto a gurney and into an ambulance. Turns out the floorboard saved my foot and leg from getting crushed, something a motorcycle would *not* offer. My armored riding jacket and full-face helmet did the rest: Obviously, I have assorted aches/pain to deal with for the moment, but nothing was broken, and I was able to walk out of my local hospital's trauma unit later that night on my own two feet. Also rather obvious, since I'm not giving up riding, is that my next bike will also be a Vespa GTS, as Melody, my current GTS, is likely a write-off from the fairly heavy damage she sustained from that crash. I doubt any motorcycle would "take a bullet" for me the same way!

Sorry to hear your story. One can fit crash bars to a motorbike. I have a BMW boxer, and the pots and crash bars extend well beyond my leg. Saying that, I dropped the bike one when manoeuvring on my drive. It rested on the crash bar, and not a mark to the bike.

Glad you survived to tell us your tale. Get well soon and good on you for getting back on the horse when the time comes! I think small bikes and scooters are more fun. I have a Springer Harley and it's fun and it looks great but it does have heavy steering and a lot of weight. I rode a GTS a few years ago from one of my son's friends and I was pretty impressed and that was 15 plus years ago..

I read your comment last year and it's been on my mind all these months. Decades ago I was at the University of Texas at Austin and a student on his motorcycle and his girlfriend riding as passenger was broadsided by a car. The girlfriend lost her foot. At the time I thought how guilty the boyfriend must feel to have indirectly caused a lifetime disability to his girlfriend, the immense physical pain and mental distress of a young college girl losing her foot, and now years later as an adult with my own children heading to college, I think of the parents pain and guilt that they didn't protect their child from harm. I still enjoy riding my motorcycles and scooters and all three of my high school kids ride my Honda Monkey under my close supervision. Now that it's been a year since your collision, I'm curious if there are any remnants of residual injury. Vehicle accident injuries can sometimes take months or even years to resurface, sometimes reappearing as one ages and the body is no longer in peak physical condition. My hope is that you recovered fully.

@@donaldlee6760 Wow…that's the sort of story that tears at me. Regardless of who might've been at fault, the turmoil of the aftermath is still there. For me, the news is very good:other than one small scar near the right shoulder blade, I've suffered no residual effects from the crash. As I've told others, one factor likely was the that I literally didn't see what hit me, therefore I didn't physically "freeze up" the way I likely would otherwise have, and simply did the limp-rag-doll thing when i was knocked clear of the bike. (My armored jacket did the rest.) As careful as I generally always have been (i.e. not riding like a jackass), I'm just that much more cautious now…and more observant of how many motorists regularly throw caution to the wind, especially post-COVID. Thanks for the inquiry, Donald!

This debate reminds me of when I was a kid and dudes only wanted to drive cars with stick shifts. Then you get a little older and discover how nice an automatic transmission is (especially in a city with stop-and-go traffic). Now almost all cars are automatic. I realize motorcycles seem more manly, but once you're over trying to impress girls it's easier to appreciate the convenience of scooters. Motorcycles are a pain. Always having to gear up. Way harder to carry even the slightest cargo. I actually think most of them are less comfortable than Vespas by a lot. My last bike was a 2016 Ducati Scrambler Sixty2. It has a 399cc engine, got 50 mpg and it's top speed was about the same as the 2009 Vespa GTS 250 I just bought that gets closer to 70 mpg. Incredibly quiet, peaceful, flickable. I bought an affordable top case for the back rack of my Vespa and I can basically hold 4 bags of groceries on this thing no problem. At the same time, it's powerful enough that I can still take it into the mountains on a solo camping trip. I live near the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, and I can go over a 9,000-ft mountain pass with no problem. I'm completely sold on these scooters. I also find them way easier to work on. Anybody can change a belt and rollers. You barely need any tools. I would never attempt to change my motorcycle chain and sprockets. I don't have the right tools to do most things on a motorcycle. I take the scooter to drive-thus to pick up dinner and place it in a bag on the front hook. Try doing that on a motorcycle.

I think it might even be to impress other guys.. When I was a kid and could only ride a 50cc many other boys at the same age just sneered at scooters. Well I sure wasn't the one who is going to change 1-4 or even 1-6 gears to reach a top speed of 45km/h 😂 So for that reason I chose a scooter. It was a Piaggio NRG Purejet. One of the first ones that had fuel injection. Loved that thing! Vespas do bring up the nice memories. While riding a scooter in the moped age it sure made it harder to learn to use the gears for a motorcycle license. But I managed. I owned a Yamaha 650 Dragstar (V-star) for a while. I also test rode a triumph and a vespa a couple of years back. I liked both! I could ride either one. Neither was ”better” than the other. Even when the Triumph had what a 900cc engine? The Vespa was a GTS 300.

I have a 750 Kawasaki but also a 1991 250 Nighthawk. It weighs the same as a Vespa 300, goes just as fast and with a single carb and two cylinders sounds like an old Brit bike. It has bigger wheels than any scooter, handles like a feather and is stable on the interstates even when a truck comes by. Yes, a 300 Vespa is easier to handle than a Harley but pales in comparison to a 250/300cc bike. A Vespa gets to sixty in about ten seconds, a Z400 does it in less than five and gets equal gas mileage. Now I have been shifting since 1962 so it's like breathing to me. I don't have to think about it.

I can't believe I'm just getting my first scooter in my mid 40's. Never owned a two wheeler or driven one either, but I've been to different countries in Asia many times (China, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Thailand) in the last 30 years and a huge percentage of the population in those countries have scooters. With rising gas prices and getting only 20 mph in my vehicle, 80-100mph sounds good to me.

Excellent overview, Robot. And, if you're like me, and don't have the luxury of being able to own multiple vehicles (I don't even own a car), purpose and geography figure pretty highly in choosing a ride. I've taken my GTS 300 for two-mile errand-runs, 100-mile-plus round-trips on the highway, and a few trips of 200 miles, plus a ton of inner-city riding. I can't think of another bike doing the job as well, nearly year-round. (Yes, even here in the Northeast; the only things that stop me are heavy snow and ice, which we're supposed to see more of this time 'round.)

The analogy is wonderful. It's all about what you care about and how focused you are on specific things. If you really care about speed, you're gonna ride a supersport. If you like the looks and that's what really important to you, you're gonna go retro classic or a Harley if you romanticize the "danger" aspect without really going to dangerous modern bikes like sport/naked bikes. If you care about transportation and just need a tool to commute, you're gonna abide the helmet law, get a 3/4 helmet and hop on your scooter. And then, you have the middle ground bikes - usable machines for commuting that still have some passion in them, i.e your naked bikes, adventure/crossover bikes. Heck, even a Vespa has more die-hard fanboys than an SV650 or NC750X. It''s all a matter of who you are as a biker, and as a person.

All wise advice and beautifully presented. As an old dirt-bike rider and current classic Vespa user, I would stress a little bit stronger the stability factor which is way way lower on a scooter, especially a classic one, because of the small diameter wheels.

I have a Harley Davidson Fat Boy and a Vespa gts 250. I love the Fat Boy but I don't like to ride it on short trips to the store. It's great on the interstate. On short trips, it's a wrestling match just to get it out of the garage. The Vespa is sooooooo easy. I can get moving much quicker. It's really convenient. Also, if I have the girlfriend with me the Harley is a way better choice than the Vespa. Especially if it's a long ride. Then there are times I feel the need for speed. That's when I roll out the Honda cbr1000. What I'm trying to say is, each ride has its speciality. One bike doesn't to it all for me.

I have been riding for 47 years and for 46 of those I have had a full licence. I originally got into the scooter scene in the Uk as it was a life style choice, clubs, hideouts and fashion, yep basically a Mod. In latter life as well as cars I moved into big bikes. Never much liked sports bikes but I did like my Suzuki 850 GS. But guess what, I now ride a Vespa GTS 300 touring and I have used it for touring. It has all the power I want, comfort and carrying capability. I never liked riding in a suite of armour so, most days its a casual wind and rain proof jacket. I live near the sea so trips to the beach, cafe's or just shopping the GTS is much easier. I even get two fold down chairs on the front rack. I have ridden across Europe and in India many times. I have hired a Royal Enfield in India but soon found out on most roads there was no real advantage in having a bike. In fact there is nowhere to stash you beach gear or belongings.

I’ve been riding for 35 years, first on Vespas and shortly afterwards exclusively Lambrettas with a brief stint on an Aprilia RS250. Although I miss that motorbike, I get more riding fun on my Lambretta which is still running it’s 20 year old TS1 Annihilator engine. It’s been a daily rider, commuter and long distance tourer in Europe and now in California. I’m building another Lambretta with a similar engine and also a full race engine for flying mile racing and I’ve got no plans for another motorcycle nor a Vesapa, no offense meant, lol.

There is a growning trend of atutomatic mototorcycles and maxi scooters that have motorcycle features. Specifically, Honda motorcycles with DCT automatic transmission and electric motorcycles like Zero. Maxi Scooters with parallel twin engines mounted in the chassis gives a motorcycle ride, like the Yamaha Tmax 530, Burgman 650, BMW C650, Kymco AK550, and the new Forza 750

The small 50cc scoots/mopeds are great for small towns of say 3,000 people more or less. As long as there are no major hills you need to get up on a daily basis, the small displacement scoot is fine. If you work a few miles from where you live, it's perfect. You can zip home on a scoot if you get, say, 30 minutes for lunch break. Sure ,you could walk, but it will take you 15+ minutes each way, and so no lunch for you. Yes, you could easily ride a bicycle as well. But if the scoot has some under seat storage or a rack to mount a luggage unit, or even a plastic tote, you can make it more functional for small grocery runs, weekend yard sale tours, etc. If however, you need to get up to 40+ mph regularly, forget the 50cc models. You will need to go up to 125cc or higher. The Honda Helix is a 250cc and is like riding a comfortable chair with wheels on the highway. You can find used models all over the United States. The older Yamaha Tmax is an awesome higher displacement scoot that will make you think you're riding a motorcycle. Think about the primary use you want it for and choose appropriately. Some of the scoots are made in Taiwan, which generally have a better quality level of manufacturing than the Chinese made ones. If down the road you want to sell it, you may prefer going with a Honda or Yamaha, Vespa simply for easier resale.

If only one bike is possible, I would choose the Beverly 350. Strong enough for long trips where you can reach 200 miles with one tank. It has a very easy handling between a Vespa and a motorcycle, a very good wind and rain protection. The big storage under the seat is very useful, so it is not necessary to mount a top case

I would love to see a comparison of a vespa 125 vs a mini motorcycle like a grom, z125 or benelli tnt 135 in heavy city traffic or short distance grocery runs or a longer fun ride with friends. The mini motorcycles have the same 12 in rims, wheelbase, height and weight......

I love scooters, and want to get one like the Liberty or ADV for San Diego commuting on non-highway roads, but the one major problem for scooters, in my eyes, is the comfort versus motorcycles. I see people hunched over on scooters with all the weight going on their ass which, in my mind, would bring all the vibrations to the back. A motorcycle seems to better distribute the weight between the feet, legs, arms and ass, leading to something more comfortable to ride. If there were a motorcycle with a CVT (though manual transmission is not a deal breaker for me) that brought the sitting ergonomics of a motorcycle, with the practicality of a scooter (with storage space), I’d be all over it (in theory). I’m debating between a Grom and a Liberty as my main and only local commuting and riding around bike. My heart goes to Grom for its lightness/nimbleness and ergonomics, but my brain goes to the Scooter (ADV or Liberty) due ti built in storage and ability to comfortably carry a passenger. I’d love to see a video comparing a Grom or Monkey compared to the Liberty.

May be it sounds absurd, but I am 1.95m tall with quite long legs and I find my Vespa 300cc way more comfortable than my 1250cc BMW! They say that I look funny on my Vespa, but I have no issues with it, while on the BMW all my body hurts after just one hour of riding. I have wrist pains, back pains, numb hands and my butt is also in pain. No such issues with my Vespa

On the safety in a skid issue, I would have thought a scooter would be better. The weight is less and is carried low. Whereas with a motorcycle such as the Thruxton 900 he was demonstrating the weight is more and it is more top heavy. Leading to a greater tendency to fall over.

I own a burgman and a xmax, I’ve owned many motorcycles over the years and after owning scooters particularly maxi scooters they are far superior to any motorcycle, weather protection, storage, handle better with a passenger, also if you slide off a scooter you can tuck your legs in and keep them attached to your body instead of having your leg crushed between the engine and the road,
