I always thought Onslaught was a really cool looking robot with a lot of potential. Their inability to self right was what did them in - they should have made a small self righting system like the one Panick attack had, but smaller, like the one on Tantrum or Quantum. Would have made a world of difference, perhaps even put them up there with Hypnodisc and Chaos 2.

31:13 That 'doinnnng noise, I don't think there's a better one in the history of Robot Wars. I can play that on repeat endlessly and not get bored 36:27 I wish my sisters played that game with me and backed me up. Damn it. I think this is probably the worst heat in S5, and even then it's better than anything from S2 or S9 (downvotes incoming). People are quick to mock 3 Stegs and... eh, you can kinda see it. It's a nasty spinner, better than the little propellor they had in Extreme, but it just wasn't backed up by a decent enough machine. Splinter must have been suffering from radio issues or the like, and Tetanus, which I think was the second best machine in the heat, was still undergoing teething problems. One thing that this episode did have in spades though was the Robot Wars banter and sportsmanship I think it became famous for. Joe and Ellie aren't just 'token kids' and actually contribute something to the team's presence, we had the kids from Tetanus who drive pretty well as their dad orders them about - reminds me of Soldier Ant from Battle Of The Stars, where the Olivers worked pretty well as a family. Not only that, pretty much after every fight you had people being good sports, shaking hands, being generally good people. I get the distinct feeling Eleven shouldn't have been there (it would have made a fantastic set piece for Techno Games) but they took it very well. Battle wise this was pretty meh, and MrSyko will likely say some pretty nasty things about it if he gets to it, but it's the little things that I think make it a decent episode. Also I got here before TheRoboteer. Ha ha ha.

Well obviously all the good bots were used up last week. Only one I rate in this lot is Bigger Brother. Maybe 3 Stegs. Bigger Brother lost no time in lifting TipTop over the barrier. 3 Stegs (or any other bot you like to name) against Eleven was the most uneven battle I've seen. Eleven, a complicated array of plastic tubes and exposed mechanism,slowly plonking its way around the floor while 3 Stegs attacked at leisure. The only thing that gave 3 Stegs trouble was slipping on Eleven's hydraulic fluid and getting tangled in Eleven's tubes - a walking entanglement device. Philippa trying to get the teams to make threats against each other is kind of pathetic, I'm pleased to see. Bigger Brother turfed Splinter over the barrier in short order, to follow Tip Top. BB is mightily impressive this time round. Tetanus is a very unusual bot. It controlled 3 Stegs quite well until they scored a lucky hit on one of Tetanus' prongs. And what a performance by Bigger Brother on the rampage. Repeatedly flipping 3 Stegs, failed to tip it over the barrier a couple of times, ended up stranding 3 Stegs on its side, and in between flipping Shunt (YAY!) and having a number of slightly ill-advised goes at Killalot - one of the most entertaining performances I've seen.

Gregory Atkin beat me to the review this time so I'll keep it brief. Still personally think that 3 Stegs is a terrifically underrated machine. Yes it was probably a step down from Steg 2, but that disc was very powerful by series 5 standards. Ripped straight through the metal of Tetanus' lifter. I think the amount of hate it gets is a bit unjustified personally, especially when you consider the background of why the bot was the way it was.

Viper 01 was originally planned to enter the Series 4 qualifiers against eventual winners Ming 2. But due to technical difficulties the team chose to withdraw and replace the robot for Hard Cheese (either the Series 3 or Extreme 1 design, not too sure), which easily got flipped over by Ming 2 and lost. This choice would've been pointless since Hard Cheese was a middleweight entry, and the main series consisted of heavyweight robots which obviously had a minimum weight limit that Hard Cheese exceeded, and was not eligible to compete. Furthermore, Series 4 didn't stage any side competitions for lighter weight categories.

Real pity. From Joe. X
@josephilsley302811 ай бұрын
@joeandrews7329 Maybe for that series only a rare exception was made on the minimum heavyweight limit. When it comes to clusterbots (e.g. Gemini) one machine alone is virtually classed as a middleweight. Therefore, Hard Cheese could still have qualified, required by needing to win more than one fight to be certain, and be selected for the reserves bench at best.
