Robotics Engineer Jeffrey Carlson helped build the Perseverance Rover that's driving around on Mars and now he's here at Gamology to let us know just how close we are to the coming robot revolution. Jeffrey talks about the things we should already be thinking about before the explosion of generalised AI onto society and wonders if our phones are already lying to us. Join Jeffrey in becoming excited and anxious for the future in this episode of Experts React.

Detroit: Become Human is a third-person adventure game where audience members have the ability to choose their own perspectives. The story continues without these characters as there are multiple playable characters; therefore, there is no "game over" message following the death of a character. With fast-paced events and dialogue choices, there are multiple ways in which the story can unfold.

It's kinda disappointing they didn't show him the best possible ending when he himself is so positive about AI and Androids and Robots. You can literally end the game with a tentative, but hopeful peace between the Androids and Humans, Markus and North are in love, Kara, Alice, and Luther are a family, and Connor and Hank are best friends. It's so wholesome but you have to put in a lot of effort, but it's so worth it to get the best ending.

These types of videos are always fascinating to me. I was really surprised how much psychological depth he added in pertinent to our depictions of androids in our culture. It does seem that often tines when we fear something we get so fixated on it, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy at that point.

1:32 little bit of context: the Androids (at least during this stage of the game) have to follow the orders given to them by their owners, the reason she doesn't intervene is because it goes against her master's wishes...that is until she breaks her programming a little bit later.
@TheAngryXenite
@TheAngryXenite 2 жыл бұрын
That's actually not quite true, as I do believe androids are programmed to contact authorities when certain crimes are witnessed, typically violent crimes. If Kara had seen Todd abusing his daughter, she'd have contacted the police no matter what he himself ordered because those protocols are above anything else she is told. The reason she doesn't is, well... Alice is something else.

@@MythicSuns Horizon FW does look really good, and I sort of agree with that statement actually, but still no games have really pushed the boundaries of graphical fidelity yet. Either on pc or on the new consoles. The matrix unreal engine demo was as close to real life as a “game” can look like atm even with ray tracing but even then, that was just a demo for testing the newest game engine, it wasn’t a game itself and it still had a lot of imperfections. I would like Jeffrey to react to I, Robot (2004). It's an underrated movie that greatly inspired Detroit: Become Human among other things and in general was ahead of its time (hence why it got forgotten).
@MythicSuns
@MythicSuns 2 жыл бұрын
Ahead of its time?! Dude, the movie was based on a collection of short stories made by Isaac Asimov in 1950, those short stories might've been ahead of their time but you'd have to compare them to many other stories relating to robotics that existed beforehand. Also, iRobot is not underrated at all, in fact I don't think there's a single Will Smith movie out there that hasn't been given a fair rating. At best people love it and at worst people think it's overrated and does the short stories they're based on a disservice. I know I really enjoyed it when I initially watched it but that was a fair while ago.

I had a conversation with my friend about if we were to have our own androids would we treat them as a person or just another electronic device. The consensus of the discussion was that if the android looked human and acted human we would treat it as a normal person out of habit. In video games I always talk to the characters as if they could hear me using pronouns instead of thing or it. I would naturally treat an android like a person especially if they looked that life like. I'd like to see his reaction to all of Markus' paintings they r very intriguing and beautiful. So how I imagine employment works is that the Androids don't get paid, Cyberlife does. Companies rent the androids and pay a monthly fee for them, but overall that fee becomes less and more efficient for your company than hiring a person. Because you don't have to worry about safety hazards, Androids filing law suits, androids unionizing, etc. You can be as scummy a company as you want and treat your employees like shit and they will never do anything about it. Atleast until Marcus shows up
@ayyyjirachi6530
@ayyyjirachi6530 2 жыл бұрын
I don't even think they do that tbh, I feel like the company or store buys androids to own. They immediately put them to work after explaining their tasks to them. This is way better than renting as they would be able to completely eliminate a fee instead of paying for no reason. And since these androids aren't people, they don't get paid or unionize, basically everything you said. And the owner reaps 100% of the rewards.
@ShiniRyuga
@ShiniRyuga 2 жыл бұрын
@@ayyyjirachi6530 But think about what happens when the store goes out of business. They'd have a crap ton of androids that theyd have to figure something out with. this is why restaurants tend to rent their tables and chairs. a company would have to already be well established and well off to afford to completely replace their staff with Androids. Also they would have to buy protection plans for every one of them, idk how exactly that works but with a rental fee, that would probably cover damages and malfunctions.

@@ShiniRyuga Yes that is true, tho some would be capable, there are many that wouldn't be able to, not right away at least. Maybe it's something they can do overtime, like replace a worker with an android bi-monthly or something. I'm not well versed business so I'm sure they know what they're doing, but man. I think putting an exit into programs might be an interesting start to free will in a machine. The ability to choose to follow programming is given at its inception. I constantly see and hear people go into these debates about how to go about with conscious AI or Robots in society. But the problem with that is the fact that outside of procreation, we can't replicate consciousness. And all available data/evidence seems to point to it being exclusive to humans. Regardless of how commonplace our personification of animals is, we haven't proven (& I would dare to say can't prove) that they do experience consciousness like we do. So how could a machine that we make possibly imitate, learn, or duplicate something we ourselves can't even quantify?

There are so many possible endings to this game. It just depends on your actions whether they turn out negative or positive for Androids and Humans. I think there is an outcome that is a peaceful resolution for both parties. In the game the reason they could create such advanced Androids is because of the blue blood or Thirium 310. That's why in the game's world Russia and the United States are fighting over the North Pole. They want to obtain the minerals to make Thirium 310.

0:20 yeah with programming that's one of many moral points we have to deal with in fact in Mt computer science class before even touching the robots we had to do a choice based survey and realize this reality, now for a robot to full on revolt and destroy things would require it to be programmed to do so and some form of major malfunction at the exact moment when it's initiating an action very very close to any given act of aggression, computers are very simple they take things directly as they are, that's another big issue when it comes to programming, we have to be very specific and simple and do our best not to overcomplicate things, because while the hardware itself is complex what it can process is in terms of directives is not

honestly I'm just excited, see there was a quote in the end of ready player one "reality is the only thing thats real." and it makes me cringe because ALL human experience is real, if you make friends with people online or in a game thats every bit as real as making friends face to face but where I'm going with this is I don't care if someone is flesh or not if I made a friend or fell in love or whatever and they later confessed they were a robot/android/cyborg/etc it would mean nothing to me because as I see it humans are just organic robots if something has freewill, a conscious, thoughts and dreams and goals, emotions what does it matter if it's flesh or not that should have no bearings on the individual or whole I mean look at our world today us humans arent that great some are awesome, some are good/bad/smart/dumb/kind/rude/peaceful/brutal why would I hold a good/bad human any higher then a good/bad self aware android, because we're both human? who cares I mean look at pets many people have pets that they love and care for but they're not human so what does it all just boil down to organic/synthetic? sounds very simple minded to me.

Explanation of robotic from engineering perspective, in short robotic most of the time this days is simply controlling an actuator. It could be pneumatic, hydraulic, or electric depends on the situation. Each has advantage and disadvantage. Usually robot are highly non linear so they required a feedback from different kind of sensors and this feedback will be put on consideration to the controller. This is called closed loop system. The control method usually must be PID aka proportional, integral, derivative controller with a formula in laplace domain C(s) = Kp + Ki/s + Kd*s. The input of the system are setpoints of what you want to control. Could be position, speed, RPM, pressure, etc. Robot usually has more than 1 degree of freedom. More motor means more degree of freedom. This also a factor in creating a humanoid robot as humans arms has 7 dof.

I kind of want to see him react to Nier automata. I think he probably would enjoy they would portray robotic learning in that.

I understand that it might seem cool to have robots integrated into society like in the game but at the same time there are so many extremely bad consequences that could occur I personally don’t think it’s really worth it.

interesting theory: the quarter specifically says "1984" because it's a nod to george orwell's 1984 and the probable belief that all androids are secretly or, rather, unintentionally recording all the things we do in any given instance.
