Developed by Visceral Games and published by Electronic Arts, Dante's Inferno is a 2010 action-adventure game that takes players on a harrowing quest through the depths of Hell. Released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PlayStation Portable (with the latter version developed by Artificial Mind and Movement), the game loosely follows the story of Inferno, the first part of Divine Comedy. Players take on the role of Dante, reimagined as a Templar knight from The Crusades, who must battle through the nine circles of Hell to save his beloved Beatrice from the clutches of Lucifer. With the spirit of the poet Virgil as his guide, Dante embarks on a perilous journey, armed with a powerful scythe that can be used in a variety of devastating combination attacks and finishing moves. As players progress through the game, they can unlock new attack combinations and abilities by collecting souls, the in-game currency obtained by defeating the denizens of Hell.

This guy really is a good Christian theologian, noting out those similarities between the New Testament’s vocabulary for instance and its clear inspirations from Greek mythology that was local to most of the writers of the NT. As a Christian myself, it is refreshing to see a pastor like him who actually engages with the Bible both inside and out So lots of people have been noting out a very bad wording problem on my part; so sorry about that😅🙏🏻🙏🏻thx for the reminder and I’ll be more mindful No, there are no ideological influences, merely the texts borrowed words from the myths as this was the language they used at the time, so it was an easier mode to express their values. The Bible does mention to use the language of the people you are preaching to, thus those influences. Again, so sorry, and I’ll pay closer attention to what I say

I genuinely believe that he would be a great addition to these series. He offers wonderful insight on the historical and biblical meanings that I’m sure most of us don’t realize. I like him! Hope to see him return again sometime again with other series that play on the idea or symbolism of religion. Oh, and what about inviting other people from different beliefs. How about inviting someone to see how Assassins Creed Origins depicted the “history” and local beliefs of the Gods at the time and compare them to what we know or believe now?

In the Bible Jesus taught about forgiveness, love and turning away or repentance of sin. This pastor gets it right in that being a Christian is not about being perfect or better than others, it’s about turning away from your old sinful ways, fighting that sin nature and loving one another. The goal is to finish the journey and spread the good news about Jesus to the world.

@@koreancowboy42 It’s for that reason why people need to read the Bible themselves. The Bible says that there will be false teachers who will teach lies or use the Bible for personal gain. And you should also remember that in the Middle Ages, most people who could read were a part of the clergy or nobility. In a populace of people who can’t read the main religious text a man with evil intentions can easily misconstrue or outright lie about what is in the Bible to get what he want from the people. It wasn’t until the printing press was created that the general populace of people were able to have widespread access to books to learn how to read and find out the lies they had been fed by false or corrupt teachers.

He's not wrong about the Greek influence, but it's also heavily influenced by Roman mythology, culture, and figures. Dante was Italian and spoke Latin, and was obviously a huge fan of the Roman poet Virgil. Don't forget that many Roman figures were part of the Inferno, such as the "noble pagans" of the first circle and the assassins of Julius Caesar that were in the 9th circle along with Lucifer and Judas. Roman culture had a huge influence on Dante because that was basically his history, being that he was Italian. Also, in this game we have the boss fight with Cleopatra and the Roman politician and military leader Marcus Antonius (Marc Antony). The Roman influence on the Divine Comedy cannot be understated. I mean, Dante was a Catholic and Rome invented Catholicism.

i've done some looking into the Divine Comedy over the years, and the thing with the Priests and Cardinals in the Greed circle was Dante (as in the original author) calling out the church for the practice of Indulgences, which was basically paying for your sins to be forgiven... and he was right to call that crap out because that's not how any of this works, especially since that money tended to go more towards lining the clergymen's pockets instead of making the church better or serving the community. Also, i think Anger being called out as a deadly sin is less of "Don't get mad" and more of "Don't let yourself be controlled by anger to the point that you do some unforgivable stuff because of it"... which honestly makes Wrath always feel like a more accurate name for it than just Anger

The three pomegranate seeds Beatrice eats are also a reference to Persephone, the wife of Hades, who ate three pomegranate seeds while she was in the underworld, meaning she had to stay in the Underworld with Hades for 3 months out of the year, which angered her mother, Demeter, the Greek goddess of agriculture (that's not the only thing she does, but that's the main thing that's talked about in regards to her), and so she made the Earth cold for those 3 months that Demeter was separated from Persephone.

The word "hell" in the English language is rooted in Germanic/Viking "hel." Christians had no word to describe it in those languages so it became a loan word that means the same. Hel = the place people go that don't go to Valhalla. Hell = the place people go to that don't go to heaven.

In the original Hebrew bible, the term is "Sheol", which is also not entirely different sounding. However, when the OT was translated in Greek around 200BCE, they used the term Haides or Hades for hell, which is the same as the name of the greek underworld. This was also used when the NT was written later in Rome. English being a Germanic language, "Hell" is most likely derived from "Hel" as you mentioned. Similarly the German term "Hölle", which in some dialects is pronounced "Helle".

This man says "This is interesting" a lot. That's interesting. All kidding aside, this is really cool to see and chill to be around, it's a fun way to learn more. I wonder what this man would think of the Darksiders games as they are still quite based on/inspired by Christianity and other mythologies (like how Bheithir in Darksiders 2 is apparently from an obscure... i think Scottish tale), though with a lot of stuff to make it its own thing. Very nice video, all in all! Pleasure to see.

This insight's really good, and as I do agree the seven deadly sins aren't necessarily evil at face value, it's the excess of it and letting it become the host instead of a guest is what got those souls into their respective paths that they're in now. This game really fleshed out those corrosive archetypes of excess perfectly, all things considered

Dante's Inferno is a fantastic game. If anyone wants to look into just how good the game really is with its narrative design and intent, as well as its faults in the path to greatness, I recommend a video done by RagnarRox - Which also teaches you how you can get to playing the game yourself if you want to. This is one of the best videos on the channel, by the way. Genuinely great stuff.

One thing I think its interesting he didn't notice, especially given how many parallels he drew between the Greek and Christian stories, was that the fruit they chose was a pomegranate. The same one Perspehone ate, which ended with her betrothed to Hades and trapped in the Underworld for half the year.

@@williamthompson1455 What is the it that is roman? Dante's inferno is a mash up of other mythos to include Greek and Roman. As an example, in Canto VI, Dante and Virgil come across Cerberus, a three-headed dog with beastly attributes. But I hear you, if you are a Christian some of his words could be off same if you are a believer in the old gods, etc... I think I just enjoyed the compare and contrast.
