The suspension thingie is my current ache. I like what B&C spekers company does, but their spiders are tightening too steeply near Xmax and Xvar, spending hundreds of unnecessary Watts to reach such excursions. Easily 360VA to Xvar. RCF on the other hand, in the same class, hangs between 130-160VA. A noted difference. So yes, spiders matter, but there is nothing one can practically do about it. Like choose the one to his liking.

I know it's an old video, I go watch older vids when I've seen all the new ones. I'm not insinuating Im highly educated in the world of subwooferology, Anyway as far as progressive spiders knowing what progressive is and how progressive vehical suspension works which is going from large softer coils prgressing into stiffer tighter coils as to have a soft ride but as travel moves it gets stiffer to handle load and maintain control... So my assumption of progressive spiders is initial softer ribs to allow efficiency and low FS for deep sound while on lower power levels but as more wattage is applied and excursion goes higher and soft ribs max out the stiffer ribs take over to be able to take more power while still maintaining control and avoiding over excursion, kind of like a soft spider and a stiff spider in one. Does it work or work or even well....? Linier will get stiffer as it moves more also but is going to start out stiffer and have a higher FS. Am I right I duno just my guess from what I know about progressive suspension on vehicals and it does work in that application. Obviously a correctly applied linier spider works fine also...

How are they all the same when some are so easy to bend / flex and some are very hard to bend / flex? The softeness/hardness level affects fs. The stiffer/harder the spider, the higher the fs will be.
@RobotUnderground Жыл бұрын
You can have the factory dope them more or less. You don't need layers and layers of spiders to do this. Just the dope. In this case, we went with hearty silicone as the laminate. We think this is a good solution and provides years of consistent behavior on behalf of the suspension. If you watch the GONZO Jr. videos / specs, I tend to build low Fs subwoofers for daily guys.
@akuma4u Жыл бұрын
@@RobotUndergroundso i recently had a sundown sub reconed using various upgraded parts one of which was their black spider which raises fs. The fs of the sub prebreak in is around 42hz which is high. I was told it will lower a bit when played over several weeks. So a high fs sub, is it really that bad? If u consider that most music has its basslines 40hz and up, it doesnt seem like such a bad thing. Also once inside a box that fs changes. Not sure if putting a high fs sub into a 32hz tuned box is a good idea though? Is it?
@RobotUnderground Жыл бұрын
@@akuma4u The bass guitar typically only plays to 44Hz. This is correct. However with synth or just a computer, you can do much lower notes that really move you. The bass player in Korn for example added a 5th string for him to hit for really great, low bass. Having a high Fs like that will NOT allow you to play low, even with your box tuned low. Sorry, you're stuck with an SPL fart machine. I'm sure it'll do good numbers but it won't sound great. Maybe next time. Find a buyer that wants that sort of thing.
@akuma4u Жыл бұрын
@@RobotUndergroundso far. It sounds great thankfully. And it only has maybe several hrs of playtime on it. As the weeks pass it should get even better. Sundown has several high fs subs like their u series and their older zv3 series which had an fs of 47hz but hit lows and everything well. I think there is more to take into consideration like motor force, and the lowering of fs over time.

DD Audio laminated spider with a layer of foam between spider? yes,no? ive seen the foam. what is this?
@RobotUnderground3 жыл бұрын
Try to think of these things as engineering solutions. Solutions that require min. funds. To me, the first problem you'd run into is the foam wearing. You'd also have to clamp / bolt down the OD of the spider. Last time I checked, Fi was also laminating their leads, which I don't understand. My solution is to make the leads overkill so they never get hot. One of the reasons of putting them on top is to keep them cool. In the end though, if their solution works, it works.
@RobotUnderground3 жыл бұрын
Diamond subwoofers and some of the old HCCA spiders used poly stuffing to dampen the leads from slapping the insides of the spiders.

These things do duffer a bit. It is just that one cannot rely on the differenca as a game changer or problem solver, really. Noone is going to notice dditional 1mm further stroke with given distortion, noone is going to notice 35Watts of less heating based on extended compliance with stroke. It is just that making things better for sake of it makes sense. It is then ruined by BS claims by the companies as explained.

Lmao u test all ur subs so u can call bullshit. I guess I got the shit end of that stick cuz the quad stack w/3" coil I bought off you must have been tested on its good side cuz within a week I was getting a crazy knock from inside cone assembly leading to a slightcoil rub. Drove me crazy. I really didn't want to make the drive to mesa so I didn't take u up on warranty. And really wanted to figure out y and learn how assemble a blown sub because it's a great thing to know when I'm prone to killing shit because I'm ignorant and am learning what limits r in an audio system. I honestly believe for some reason maybe a clamp got shifted or w/e but the coil wasn't quite aligned. So I bumped it as if nothing was wrong and a month l8er it finally ate through the former and shorted coil. I no u preaching soft spider heavier coil = good performance but I couldn't believe how loose and worn the spider was after disassembly. I couldn't get a proper liner travel with it after replacing coil. And the stupid knocking was the support dust cap. Stupidest thing to have to figure out of noob like me. But I did eventually get it bumping again after replacing spider with a triple layer one and now the sub works great I really like the way you built this motor and honestly don't hold nothing against you cuz I know you would of fixed it without a problem once u heard the floppy middle support cap knock the cabon dust cap. Sounded terrible. It's on me for not utilizing ur warranty. But just thought I'd bring it up cuz the commit in video. But I know you're ego doesn't come before humility.
