One of the main points was portraying the strength of the women. The author, "Shelby's" brother, wanted to tell about all the strong women in his life, and how they handled the death of his sister. This is how the movie got the name "Steel Magnolias." It's about being feminine and being strong.

What I also love from this movie's story is, they were shooting the movie, it was hot where they were shooting I think in Georgia, it had been a long day and everyone was kind of grumbling about it, and I believe it was Julia Roberts who said she saw Dolly sitting on a swing and just swinging away seemingly happy as could be, and she went over to her and said, why are you not grouchy like all the rest of us, and Dolly told her, I dreamed all my life about being a star and singing and acting in movies, and my dream has come true, so why would I be b-ing when my dream came true. That is Dolly Parton in a nutshell, she is thankful for the blessings given which we should all remember to be.

I refused glassed when I found out I needed them in 8th grade, 1975. I got contacts... hard lenses were the only ones available and they hurt so much. They did come in amazing colors, so I had deep blue eyes with red instead of white eyeballs. They popped out easily and we're expensive so, yes, everything stopped so the search for the missing lense could go on. I switched to glasses due to the discomfort until soft lenses came out in the 80s. Those were amazing. They even came out with some you could wear a couple weeks at a time, what a blessing to wake and see a clock in middle of night without having to search for glasses. They were removed from market due eye infections. I eventually had to stop contacts about 10 years ago due to dry eyes and autoimmune diseases. Now I'm going to get to have good eyesight without glasses due to cataracts...

This movie is so multilayered that I always pick up something different every time I watch it. On my 3rd or 4th time, I realized that Spud was actually in a major depression because of employment issues. I kinda wish y’all had included the scene where Spud offers to go to Shelby’s funeral with Truvy, because I took that to be his being shocked out of his depression and realizing you have to live life and love your loved ones because you only get one chance. Dolly’s reacting in the scene was priceless. Truvy was getting her husband back. Even though it is close to the end of the movie, Spud’s demeanor is more positive after this. Loved your reaction to this movie.
@RhetoricalThrill Жыл бұрын
Yes! Hardly anyone catches that. He comes off as neglectful and closed off because we're only seeing Truvy's perspective. When you look closer you can see that he is deep, deep in it, and it's even sadder because Truvy has no idea what to do and probably thinks it's her fault.

Shirley MacLaine movie acting career stated in the late fifties. Two of her earlier films are Some Come Running where she costars with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin in a melodrama, and of course the masterpiece The Apartment(1960).The Apartment is a dark, cynical romantic comedy directed and written by Billy Wilder.

This is actually based on a true story, the man who wrote the play also wrote the screenplay. Its based on his sister who died due to complications from diabetes. I remember reading somewhere he said he wrote it for his sister's son so that he would not forget his mother and would always have something to remember her by.

A couple of other great movies from that period that I really enjoy is "Fried Green Tomatoes". Which was written by Fanny Flagg. She was most known for her Match Game appearances. Also "Driving Miss Daisy". This was a Morgan Freeman classic.

You guys have seen the great Sally Field (who plays Shelby’s mom and delivers the heart wrenching funeral performance) in Forrest Gump, she was his mom. You should check out her Oscar winning performance in “Norma Rae”. You should also check out Shirley MacLaine’s Oscar winning performance in “Terms of Endearment” and Olympia Dukakis’s Oscar winning performance in “Moonstruck” which also stars Cher in her Oscar winning performance. Lots of Oscar winning performances lol

The actor who played Shelby’s dad is Tom Skerritt. He played Maverick’s (Tom Cruise) commanding officer in Top Gun and he is also in Top Gun: Maverick. If you get to Kill Bill 1 & 2 you will probably not recognize Daryl Hannah (Annelle) but she is fantastic in that film. She also stars in the movie “Roxanne” with Steve Martin that is such a funny movie.

Great reaction as usual . This truly is an all star cast of mostly Oscar winners. Here’s some o their other greats: Sally Field- Norma Rae, Places of the Heart; Julia Roberts - Pretty Women , Erin Brockovich; Shirley MacLaine(Weezer) The Apartment and Terms of Endearment; Dolly PARTON - 9 to 5 ; Olympia Dukakis- MoonStruck and Darryl Hannah - Splash
@walterrutherford8321 Жыл бұрын
Besides Splash, when I think of Daryl Hannah movies I think of Clan of the Cave Bear, Memoirs of an Invisible Man with Chevy Chase, and unfortunately one that she didn’t do, Footloose (that was Lori Singer). But I forgot she was in one of the absolute best sci-fi movies ever made, Blade Runner, with Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, and Brion James. Daryl is a sorely underrated actress. I don’t know if I’d’ve recognized her in Steel Magnolias if here names wasn’t in the opening credits.

I swear I needed stitches from laughing so hard when I saw the eggs in the trunk get smashed. And the dynamic between Shirley MacLaine and Tom Skerritt,amazing. I love them as husband and wife in The turning point. That’s another film you must watch for your pleasure. And Moonstruck! That has Olympia Dukakis, another must see. I can quote that any day. 😊 So glad you added this film to your watch collection. A real gem, this one.

Great choice. Sally Field had the main role in this film and, I believe, had the best performance in this film. She was also in "Forrest Gump" in which she played Forrest's mother. I do love Dolly in this film though. I also love Olympia Dukakis and especially Shirley MacLaine (these two had some of the best and funniest scenes). Darryl Hannah is also good, but she is the weakest link of the ladies. I highly recommend (Please) that you guys watch "Nine To Five" which is Dolly's first film and "Pretty Woman" with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in her star making performance. Both fil.s are highly enjoyable.

@impishsongster333 Жыл бұрын
9 to 5, would be a great reaction! It has such a stacked cast, and such a fun & unique story. It's also has a fantastic peek, at what life was like in the work force, back in 1980. Pretty Woman, was a big movie back in the day, when it came out. I'm gonna be honest, I tried watching it recently, and there's only a few memorable scenes...the rest of the movie is largely forgettable, or slow. I kept waiting for it to pick up, or get interesting. Maybe it just hits different, 30+ years later? Idk. Instead of Pretty Woman, I would suggest, The Runaway Bride, if you're looking for a fun, fast, and touching, Julia Roberts - Richard Gere, movie. Much better performance from Gere, and far more enjoyable. Again, in my humble opinion. (sounds like a good opportunity for a movie poll)😉

As a living donor(donated to my mom in 2018), this movie hits home. My mom and I are doing ok but I can't run as fast as I could before the surgery and have to watch my salt intake. I love this movie and look at how Shelby wanted a baby so bad that it did not matter if her body could take it or not. I had a conversation with my dad about this cause he did not want me to donate, knowing I have two daughters that could possibly need a kidney one day. I did it anyways cause it is my mom. Thank you two so much for reacting to this movie. It was a great cast and you two bring joy into my life with every reaction video. Thanks again for being you! Much love from Texas!!!
