Centerfold was THE. FIRST. VIDEO. I EVER saw in my life! I remember being TOTALLY blown away by it! I must've been like 12 or something when it came out. Then, just a few years ago, I had my kids in the car from school pickup and trying to turn down the alley to our parking lot, but had to wait for a van unloading gear into the small music venue a couple doors down from our place. A fairly common occurance, a little incobvenient, but we were used to it. When we got inside, I googled the venue to see who was playing that night, and it was PETER WOLF!!! 🤩🤯🥁

@Relevant Brother, "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" was so iconic that Dennis Miller made it the theme song for his HBO comedy show... Tears For Fears were part and parcel of the 80's second British invasion and caught my attention right off the bat. "Mad World" had something that caught the ear, then "Shout" and "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" they cemented their sound, and their place with American fans. I liked them at least as well as any of the British bands ((which is a lot!) and then later they came out with "Sowing The Seeds Of Love" which I have in my playlist right next to The Beatles "All You Need Is Love".. There's a sound called "gated reverb" that Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins accidentally came across when they were recording one of Gabriel's solo albums in the early 80s. It's a method of recording that gives the drums a slight distant reverb effect. Prince heard it, and insisted on using it on all his early 80s songs. Pretty soon nearly every music producers just used it as a standard for any rock or pop songs they recorded. But, in the early to mid 90s, people just stopped recording drums with gated reverb. I pops up here and there, and there was a resurgence of using it on some recent hits by Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, Lorde, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Rihanna. I think that signature 80s sound you're talking about is rooted in that weird drum reverb that all those folks were using back then. Here is a great video on the phenomena kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKndZ52Jnbxgaac.

I love this song. I remember being like maybe 8-9 years old (I'm 37 so this a while back, lol), I was on a plane and I was singing this song out loud and my mom was trying to get me to be quite. I still sing random songs out loud in random places. I used to sing "You're the One That I Want" from Grease at work... it was a call center.

Here's a great one-hit wonder of the 80's: "At This Moment" by Billy Vera & The Beaters. It was made popular from its airplay on the TV show "Family Ties." That show literally made it a hit, and it went to #1. I don't think it would've even charted if it wasn't for that show.

Be wary when looking for lists of one-hit wonders, some are compiled by people who weren't even alive in the 80s, and many include songs by bands that legitimately had other hits. "Take On Me" is remembered as one of the biggest hits of the 80s, if not the biggest, and because it overshadowed everything else it sometimes ends up on those lists; but a-ha had two other legit hit singles ("Hunting High and Low" and "The Sun Always Shines on TV"), and even did the song for a James Bond movie. Tears for Fears is sometimes on those lists, and there are three different songs that end up on those lists, depending on which one the list maker remembers most, and besides those big three ("Everybody Wants to Rule the World", "Shout", and "Head Over Heels"), they also had phenomenal hit singles from the previous album ("Change", "Mad World", and "Pale Shelter", all of which would make for great reactions). Anyway, having said that, if you're still reading, here are a few legit one-hit wonders you might enjoy: "Shattered Dreams" by Johnny Hates Jazz "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow "Cars" by Gary Numan "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Weat Shades" by Timbuk3 "Major Tom (Coming Home)" by Peter Schilling That last one is interesting. Lyrically, it's a sequel to "Space Oddity" by David Bowie, but musically it's completely unrelated.

I have looked at this song as a near-perfect example of pop songcraft. Great production, arrangement and melodicism. Catchy chorus, two solid solos, smooth vocal performance and great ending. It also has great pacing and song length. No part of it wears out its welcome and every part fits the song extremely well.

"(I Just) Died in Your Arms" is the debut single by the English pop rock band Cutting Crew, from their debut studio album, Broadcast (1986). It was first released on 25 July 1986 in the United Kingdom, and then released to the United States on 1 January 1987. The song was written by frontman Nick Van Eede, produced by Terry Brown, John Jansen and the band, and mixed at Utopia Studios in London by Tim Palmer. The power ballad[1] is the band's biggest hit, peaking at number one in the United States, Canada, Norway, and Finland, and reaching the top five in the UK, South Africa, Sweden, and Switzerland.

My recommendations for 80s one hit wonders are "Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats, "Tarzan Boy" by Baltimora, "Perfect Way" by Scritti Politti, and "Rock Me Amadeus" by Falco. Anyone agree?

True but then again the 1 hit wonder refers to a band or singer only having 1 HIT, they all have other songs, may have been around awhile even but only had 1 song hit the charts, I think doing a 1 hit wonder reactions will open up the door to the die hards getting twisted about their group being put into that category but it would be a lot of fun...

I will add that those other songs from an artist might also be a top 40 hit, but only the most prominent hit is the one everyone remembers. So, for example, Vanilla Ice's first single is a top 5 hit song, then he released Ice Ice Baby, but we only remember the second single.

@jermalcromartiepresents57283 жыл бұрын
@@kevinhodgson2990 That's the problem with One-hit wonders as many artists have written a hit song that overshadows the entire discography, and they get lumped in with artists with literally one hit. But Roy only has one mainstream hit, so does Jimmy Hendrix, as he was more successful in the UK. Top 40 in the hot 100 counts as a pop hit with some exceptions, such as the Scatman song, which peaked at #54 but has a long shelf life in the pop culture zeitgeist. Mexican Radio and Lily Allen's Smile are other examples.
@jermalcromartiepresents57283 жыл бұрын
@Magicman82 The other problem is that people are labeling artists as one-hit wonders only because that's the only song they remember.
@kevinhodgson29903 жыл бұрын
@Magicman82 totally agree, the rules are the rules. It's up to the listener to dig deeper. A guy like Frank Zappa only had one top 40 hit but has a massive catalog of 119 albums. So the moniker One Hit Wonder can definitely be misleading, but that's just the way it is.
