This was Rick James answer to Prince’s girl group Vanity 6. However, Sheila E (bad ass percussionist) was discovered by Prince as well. Her song Glamorous Life was everything!! The official video was really cool too.

In 1983, Mary Jane Girls charted "All Night Long" on the R&B chart (#11) & the Dance chart (#8 bundled with 2 other tracks from the debut LP "Candy Man" & "Boys". "All Night Long" was ignored by the Billboard Hot 100 chart but MJG cracked that chart with 1985's "In My House" (their biggest hit: #7 Pop, #3 R&B, & #1 Dance).

There was a little bit of a competition between Prince and Rick James - not themselves, but their created "girl bands." Vanity 6, Apollonia 6 were Prince's. They did okay. (And I'm a HUGE Prince fan). But Rick James' Mary Jane Girls had several hits. Great to listen to those tunes. Thanks for the reaction!

I'm overall more of a Prince fan than a Rick James fan, but I always felt like the Mary Jane Girls were a way better group than Vanity 6. Mostly because Rick chose girls who could actually sing lol. Prince managed to cover up Vanity's vocal shortcomings with great production and songwriting
@poppingjaz
@poppingjaz Жыл бұрын
This is where I felt Rick trumped Prince. His projects (as far as female bands) was stronger. Neither Vanity nor Apollonia were good singers though the Vanity 6 debut album was entertaining (Brenda was the only true musician in the group) they just weren't meant for anything more than a novelty act. Prince is my favorite all time and his work shines with the Time but Ricks work with the Mary Jane Girls is wonderful.

Unfortunately the Eagles organization do not look kindly on reaction channels. They have shut many of them down with lawsuits. Their take is if you are listening to them here, then you're not streaming it, and they lose money.

Seems like a pretty dumb strategy. It’s been a few decades since their heyday and now there’s a lot of people walking around that have never heard of them. These reaction channels are their best bet to make contact with a new audience. It’s not like a lot of young people are looking for Eagles videos on KZbin otherwise.

This was Rick James' girl group. Him and Prince had a rivalry in the early 80's, each of them coming out their own competing girl groups. Rick had the Mary Jane Girls and Prince had Vanity 6 (which later became Appolonia 6). For next Female Friday, you guys should react to "Nasty Girl" by Vanity 6 to compare the two groups. Personally, I always preferred the Mary Jane Girls because they had better vocals. But Vanity 6 had a lot of bangers too. That one album of theirs was fire, mostly because of Prince's production and songwriting. Other Mary Jane Girls songs you guys should check out are "In My House" and "Candy Man"

Some more for female friday: Angela bofill - I try, this time I’ll be sweeter, what I wouldn’t do (for the love of you); Phyllis hyman - you know how to love me, somewhere in my lifetime; Brenda Russell - way back when, so good, so right; Deniece Williams - free; Minnie riperton - inside my love; The Crusaders featuring Randy Crawford - Street Life.

Rick James loved to smoke pot! Another name for pot is Mary Jane. That is probably where the girls name came from. Hence, the Mary Jane Girls. Great song! They had a lot of hits, some more x rated than others. The female RJ had sang with was Tina Marie. I heard Melvin Franklin from the Temptations is RJ’s uncle. He also did had hit song with the Temptations, “Standing on The Top”. Check it out, the live recording is great!

All the good stuff by the Girls has already been mentioned in other comments. And Rick's sax player Danny LeMelle could play that thing. Groove Theory liberally sampled this for their hit "Tell Me"

I grew up in Brooklyn NY, in Flatbush. There use to be a young teenager around my way that had a boom box. His name was Jeda, and you could hear his music on his boom box a block away. He played The Maty Jane Girls, All Night Long over and over. Anytime the front windows in our house shook with the bass from that song. My siblings and I would say. Oh, here comes Jeda!!! My block was known for having block parties. Jeda lived around the corner from us, but he always showed up lol.

That bassline actually originated with another artist named Keni Burke (previously a member of The Five Stairsteps, of "O-O-H Child" fame). He put out a song called "Risin' to the Top", which was a local hit in Chicago, and a minor R&B hit nationally. Rick James heard it, loved it, and basically used it for this song, with a slight variation, so as not to get sued. Both versions have been sampled many many times in hip-hop, probably most notably by LL Cool J for his big hit "Around the Way Girl". The Mary Jane Girls were a fantastic girl group. They should have had a bigger career, but just as they were hitting their stride, they disappeared, probably due to Rick's escalating drug use.

"In My House" is their best song ... follow by "Wild And Crazy Love" ... It is a shame that female artists only get one day! How about a day dedicated to Girl Groups!!!!

Good song - I had never heard this one. Their song "In My House" was probably their biggest hit during the 1980s.

Good Afternoon. Big Daddy Kane and LL Cool J sampled this song for their hit songs "Around The Way Girl" and "Smooth Operator."

MJG is a female group formed by late R&B /Funk singer/musician/writer/producer Rick James after his background singers (that once briefly included Teena Mariie), although none of hem were featured on the recording group. They had a few songs that had good play on R&B radio stations and only released two back-to-back albums, With member changes and lead singer JoJo departing the group for a solo career, the group didn't last long, but may be always remembered for hit songs like this, and others that are sampled by this.

Rick James and Prince were going head to head!! Rick had The Mary Jane Girls, Prince had Vanity 6...both were good!

Mary Jane Girls were far better. One thing that Prince wasn't best at.

If you can believe this combination, when they were each young musicians, Neil Young and Rick James were in a group together in Toronto

Now you need to listen to the song whose iconic bass line was the inspiration for this: Risin to the Top by Keni Burke.
