She went to my high school, and graduated 2 years ahead of me, same year as my brother. I first heard her at a coffee shop that my high school was sponsoring. For a moment after she sang, you could have heard a pin drop. Then the place went nuts. She was so reserved and sweet. My brother saw her at one of her last performances before she died. She didn't want to take a break, she wanted to keep singing.😓

A few days before Eva died of cancer, she performed "What a Wonderful World" live and she could hardly walk on stage but her performance will rip your heart out. What a beautiful soul!
Her love of gardening, particularly with her mother, her fair skin, and a mole discovered too late with a rare and very aggressive form of skin cancer is tragic on many levels. People are not supposed to be dying of skin cancer!!
@hillsane9262 Жыл бұрын
Messaged someone that said they were at the performance. As the club watched her struggle to get on stage and then singing "What A Wonderful World", there hardly a dry eye in the house. Also found out the initial skin cancer, a doctor treated it. It was believed they had gotten it. The doctor supposedly said they thought they got it and the prognosis looked good. After one follow up appointment and being told the no signs of the cancer having spread, she made no more appointments. From the Iris Independent: "Reassured by the apparent success of her operation, Eva didn't attend the follow-up appointments in the months after it. "They wanted to do regular check-ups but she didn't go because she thought it was unnecessary. She thought everything had been taken care of," recalls Hugh."

Beautiful spirit! My uncle and I were in old Town Alexandria VA and heard that Eva was going to be playing her guitar and singing so we stopped by. The building where she was performing was divided into two businesses - a shop downstairs and tiny restaurant upstairs. It was definitely close quarters. There were probably 10 people plus Eva in that tight space. My uncle and I sat closest to her. So close that we felt her voice envelope us - it's hard to describe, but it's like an ice cold glasses of water washing over you in desert heat. Smooth, soothing, innocent. So, we became Eva fans after listening to the duet cd titled "The Other Side" that she accomplished with Chuck Brown (Godfather of go-go). We brought the liner notes from their cd hoping we'd get to give her - her flowers while she was still here. Of course we told her how in awe we were with her beautiful voice and asked if she'd sign the liner notes for us. So gracious and appreciative, she said of course. Then she began thanking us for listening to her so attentively. She asked our names. Eva wrote, "Mark and Anita thank you for listening to me while everyone else was talking loudly :)." You guys have to just do an Eva Cassidy listening party! Try her "Eva Cassidy Live at Blues Alley" cd. Gone too soon!!

@Coastal Co Not necessarily. A lot of artists have songs that they performed first but weren’t written by them including Elton John and especially Elvis. They are still considered originals. I guess if depends on how much influence the performer has on the direction. With Elton John he basically got the lyrics and a vague idea and sang and did the instrumentals around that.

So do I. You have to do something really special to take Judy off the top tier for her version of this song and no one has done it yet for me.
@adamblustein82383 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Judy's was the best and it's shocking she had such a powerful voice at only 16.

Whichever version (Judy, Eva, or Izzie) that I'm currently listening to is absolutely the best one ever. They are each so different and beautiful in their own way.

Thank you! Thank You! Thank You! for reacting to this. I have been trying to give this consummate artist visibility for so long! Anything she does is incredible! Especially Fields of Gold, Time after Time, and Autumn Leaves!

She sings and elevates it beyond to a spiritual level. Heaven. I'm 82. I lost my brother a little over a year and a half ago and he was 78 and he was my pal for call those years. I cry and I'm not ashamed every time I listen to this song as sung by Eva. He never heard this version but I know he would have loved it. I like to think he actually is in heaven.

This gave me goosebumps and her voice is incredible!! I love the way she took the song into her own and made it her own. Just a beautiful rendition of the original!! I could listen to her voice all day long!!

You need to listen to the Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (Brotha IZ) and his version of Somwhere Over the Rainbow. His voice is beyond angelic and he plays the Ukulele. Over a billion views (yes a billion) its that good. He is a Hawaiian legend. RIP IZ.

Must must must hear Izzy!!! He was such a beautiful soul!!! 😥💓💓

IZ totally reinvented this classic as his own. After hearing him live, many other beautiful renditions fall short for me, including Ms. Eva’s. She performs the song well, but it doesn’t leave the “performed” realm into genuine emotional transfer, that Israel Kamakavivo ‘ole, as Eva’s seems contrived rather than feeling the song for me-thus performance is all I’m left with.

Fields of gold and songbird are amazing and will touch you just as much as this song. Eva Cassidy is my all time favorite female vocalist, her voice touches you like no one else can.

Eva [yes…long E] shot to multi-platinum stardom when this song was played on a UK radio station shortly after she died of cancer in the USA. Soon after, all of her limited collection of recordings skyrocketed up music charts. You won’t find a song by her that isn’t absolutely fantastic! They are all incredibly soulful. My faves are her versions of “Tennessee Waltz” and “Fields of Gold”.

The UK radio station was BBC Radio 2. Their breakfast show DJ the late Terry Wogan kept raving about it, and constantly played it. As he was the most listened DJ in Europe, as Radio 2 is the most listened radio station in Europe, this may have been why Eve Cassidy ended up with two posthumous number 1 albums in the UK.

She IS an angel now. I believe it was later in the same year of this performance that she passed away from cancer. Knowing that just overwhelms me when I hear/watch this. Thank you so much for checking this out.
