She went to my high school, and graduated 2 years ahead of me, same year as my brother. I first heard her at a coffee shop that my high school was sponsoring. For a moment after she sang, you could have heard a pin drop. Then the place went nuts. She was so reserved and sweet. My brother saw her at one of her last performances before she died. She didn't want to take a break, she wanted to keep singing.😓

Her love of gardening, particularly with her mother, her fair skin, and a mole discovered too late with a rare and very aggressive form of skin cancer is tragic on many levels. People are not supposed to be dying of skin cancer!!

Messaged someone that said they were at the performance. As the club watched her struggle to get on stage and then singing "What A Wonderful World", there hardly a dry eye in the house. Also found out the initial skin cancer, a doctor treated it. It was believed they had gotten it. The doctor supposedly said they thought they got it and the prognosis looked good. After one follow up appointment and being told the no signs of the cancer having spread, she made no more appointments. From the Iris Independent: "Reassured by the apparent success of her operation, Eva didn't attend the follow-up appointments in the months after it. "They wanted to do regular check-ups but she didn't go because she thought it was unnecessary. She thought everything had been taken care of," recalls Hugh."

Beautiful spirit! My uncle and I were in old Town Alexandria VA and heard that Eva was going to be playing her guitar and singing so we stopped by. The building where she was performing was divided into two businesses - a shop downstairs and tiny restaurant upstairs. It was definitely close quarters. There were probably 10 people plus Eva in that tight space. My uncle and I sat closest to her. So close that we felt her voice envelope us - it's hard to describe, but it's like an ice cold glasses of water washing over you in desert heat. Smooth, soothing, innocent. So, we became Eva fans after listening to the duet cd titled "The Other Side" that she accomplished with Chuck Brown (Godfather of go-go). We brought the liner notes from their cd hoping we'd get to give her - her flowers while she was still here. Of course we told her how in awe we were with her beautiful voice and asked if she'd sign the liner notes for us. So gracious and appreciative, she said of course. Then she began thanking us for listening to her so attentively. She asked our names. Eva wrote, "Mark and Anita thank you for listening to me while everyone else was talking loudly :)." You guys have to just do an Eva Cassidy listening party! Try her "Eva Cassidy Live at Blues Alley" cd. Gone too soon!!

@Coastal Co Not necessarily. A lot of artists have songs that they performed first but weren’t written by them including Elton John and especially Elvis. They are still considered originals. I guess if depends on how much influence the performer has on the direction. With Elton John he basically got the lyrics and a vague idea and sang and did the instrumentals around that.

Get a therapist bro! Jk, it’s a beautiful song 😊 The songs that get me emotional like that are emotional to begin with and also have a memory tied to them. Not a tear jerker but the most emotional song for me is Mr. Tamborine man by Bob Dylan. I tripped with a friend of mine at my house with a few sober friends over back in high school when I first heard this. This was before we all went off from high school. And that song was just perfect. Always gives me an indescribable feeling of being OK with life.

Eva Cassidy sadly passed away when she was only 33. The original is from the movie "The Wizard of Oz" from 1939, sung by Judy Garland, which you should hear. Mick Fleetwood tells the story of setting up a meeting for Eva with a record exec in NYC. When he asked her how it went she said "nothing came of it". Turns out they wanted to sign her but they also wanted to make her "more marketable". So glad she stuck by her vision. There's a purity in every one of her recordings that we might never have had the chance to hear if she'd chosen the easy route.

Judy owns this song eva took it over and IZ was there to take over, what we have is three different people signing the same song in their own special way, nothing can be taken away from all three, they are gone now. But this song will forever keep their memory alive. Rest in peace Judy, eva&IZ

The original song was done by Judy Garland in the movie The Wizard of oz in the 1930s. Eva Cassidy did this cover in the 1990s. She died very young at 33 of melanoma cancer. Her cover of Sting's Field of Gold is phenomenal.

I was right there with you Amber. Eva Cassidy's voice is like a massage for the soul - it gets in there deep, works out all the stress and knots, leaving you feeling loose limbed and relaxed. Another epic vocal talent we lost too soon. RiP.

It was 5 years beyond her passing, before she gained national attention. This version, by most, is considered the GOAT standard. She and her sister loved the "Oz" book series. They also inspired her to draw images of fairies. 😢✌

Her voice takes me to a place of pure contentment and joy. I can still remember the moment I heard her sing for the first time. I was driving when I heard this played on the radio and I had to pull over bc I couldn’t see through my tears. It felt like I was hearing the song for the very first time and absolutely took my breath away. Some of my favorites are You Take My Breath Away, Time After Time, Fields of Gold, Cheek to Cheek, Stormy Monday and Kathys Song.

IZ totally reinvented this classic as his own. After hearing him live, many other beautiful renditions fall short for me, including Ms. Eva’s. She performs the song well, but it doesn’t leave the “performed” realm into genuine emotional transfer, that Israel Kamakavivo ‘ole, as Eva’s seems contrived rather than feeling the song for me-thus performance is all I’m left with.

Eva [yes…long E] shot to multi-platinum stardom when this song was played on a UK radio station shortly after she died of cancer in the USA. Soon after, all of her limited collection of recordings skyrocketed up music charts. You won’t find a song by her that isn’t absolutely fantastic! They are all incredibly soulful. My faves are her versions of “Tennessee Waltz” and “Fields of Gold”.

The UK radio station was BBC Radio 2. Their breakfast show DJ the late Terry Wogan kept raving about it, and constantly played it. As he was the most listened DJ in Europe, as Radio 2 is the most listened radio station in Europe, this may have been why Eve Cassidy ended up with two posthumous number 1 albums in the UK.
