You ain’t kidding! I get laughed at all the time because I still listen almost exclusively to my favorites 80s groups and the 70s. I just think it was an era when groups all played their own music, own instruments, no autotune, and the songs have substance. Such a great era!

Tears For Fears were a band in the 80’s where you listened to it, alone in your bedroom. For hours. People didn’t have a language for emotional problems back then. As they do today. Ppl didn’t ever talk about anxiety etc. Tears For Fears verbalised problems/turmoil for us in the 80’s. Yes their songs were played at parties. But they were an emotional touchstone too.

The more you listen to TFF the more you will hear that they do alot of building up songs in layers with a lot going on. Their songs are truth in the sum = the parts. Amber you are right about Rolands voice. Very unique & distinct. No one else sounds like him & his voice is instantly recognizable. Curts voice is softer but good as well. This song featured Rolands voice where Everybody Wants To Rule The World was mostly Curt. One of the best bands ever. Please do more by them , you won't be disappointed. Sowing The Seeds will have you thinking Beatles all day.

Sowing the seeds, caused their break-up to a degree. They argued a lot of the direction of the song, it was the search for perfection. Supposedly they were not happy with it originally, but it is a perfect song. The lyrics are brilliant, and the changes throughout are what makes it a perfect pop song. I'm a heavy metal dude. But t4f are possibly my favourite band growing up back then. What about mad world...fully electronic and another iconic song. woman in chains is pure soul music in a way. they can do everything. including a brand new number one album a month or two back..

I don't think Amber realizes that with the three (3) songs they have reacted to both have been the lead singer. I think she believes it has been Roland all along. I've always gotten The Beatles vibe from this song. It ends like Hey Jude where everyone can join in with a simple lyric.

Greetings from the UK, home of Tears for Fears. The "echoey" effect is a particular effect called gated reverb, actually discovered by accident by Phil Collins. It is used a lot of 80s artistes to create a deeper effect to their voices. It is used in Head Over Heels to accentuate Roland's vibrato, which I know Jay appreciated when you reacted to it! I would be interested to see what you make of their more experimental first album, The Hurting. Mad World and Changes are musts.

Wow, this song brings me back to how we were both original and hopeful and all the while in the cold war with Russia where no one knew if one day someone would just decide to push a button. We didn't have the internet, just what was reported on tv and in books. The insanity of building up weapons to keep a balance to try to keep peace. For the new listeners, looking through the history of music the 80s synth pop in particular captured urban pain like it had never been captured before. I checked out in the '80s and focused on book lernin', but this group's music made its way to my study, and I still love it to this day. Thank y'all so much for keeping groovy music alive. If I could make one tiny suggestion, it would be that, when you stop in mid-sentence, you back it up a little, so that you don't miss, in this case, one of the most important lines in the song. "They gave you life, and in return you gave them Hell." has more impact than "They gave you li..." [Commentary]..."and in return you gave them Hell." As y'all evolve the form of music reaction, you will, of course, adopt best practices as they arise. If I weren't writing a story about the phenomenon, I wouldn't have mentioned it. I love the vibe here. The world needs a re-engroovenation. Peace and Love.

I went to one of their concerts back in high school. We got cheap seats so we were behind the stage looking at their backs. But at one point the lead singer turned around, looked up at the balcony right at me and smiled. I geeked out so hard. I was giddy the rest of the night. Such a great memory.

Tears For Fears were perhaps one of the most influential British bands of the 80's. They had a huge following at one time. Curtis Smith and Roland Orzobal were Tears For Fears..... They are about to release their first album in over 30 years.....

In 83'-84' I was a senior in High School. The Tears for Fears cd "The Hurting" was always in my car. The band was popular, but two years later when "Songs from the Big Chair" came out they were radio gods. While Shout never did it for me lyrically, the music of the last minute saves the song. Good choice, but this band's deep cuts are where they really shine. They pour emotion into every corner.

Amber, these guys are still making music and going strong. My sister and I are going to see them in June in Charlotte, NC. They are on a huge tour this year! This song was one they put out after spending a lot of time in therapy. They both apparently had a lot of trauma from their childhoods they had to work through and their music was part of their healing process.

The guitar solo is a great example of how even a simple arrangement can be very emotively powerful when you make great note choices. I think it is such an unnoticed solo in pop/rock history because most people remember the bass/keyboard breakdown in the middle, and yet Roland's solo is the pinnacle of the song imo, because of how wonderfully the song builds up to it.
