This brings up bittersweet memories for me. My dad would take me and my sisters to get pizza and the restaurant had a juke box. He would let us play some songs but we always played this for him. Thought it was his favorite. Years later he said it's a good song, not his favorite but he never sad anything because he was proud his 6-10 year old daughters weren't selfish and thought of him too. He passed in 2019, song still makes me tear up.

I feel the same. Went to a baseball game Atlanta Braves, special day with my Dad. Between innings they played this song and Dad started dancing acting a fool. I was horrified before turning around and seeing the whole second deck dancing and acting a fool. It was a moment to remember with Dad who passed in 2010.

Richard Sterban - the well-dressed one in the suit and tie - is the bass, and is one of the most recognized bass singers in country. Before he joined the Oaks, he was part of the Stamps Quartet who sang backups for a guy called Elvis Presley. For Jordan's passion, Richard was also one of the original investors of the Nashville Sounds, the Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Actually, the guy second from the right is the bass. The guy with the big ZZ Topp beard is the baritone. It's not always the biggest guy that does the bass. Look at Pentatonix. The biggest guy is Scott, the blonde, who's their baritone. The original bass, Avi, and their replacement bass, Matt, both are shorter and leaner than Scott.

This song was the Oak Ridge Boys' very first country-crossover hit of the early 1980s. The song went all the way to hit #1 on the Billboard Country chart and it peaked at the #5 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three weeks in a row during the summer of 1981. This song was a monster hit indeed!!! By the way, the guy singing with the deep voice is not the guy with the white beard. The third guy on the right with the black suit is the one with the deep voice.

There was this bar I used to roll into on my Harley when I was in the Navy, and there was this one woman that every time she heard this song she went to long lengths to make sure everybody in the bar knew that she just hated this song. She was a trip. A lot of us waited till she was drunk and made sure that we put the song on just to get to her, it was hilarious to hear her scream from the other side of the bar and get so upset.

In that photo Jay was referring to, the members are, left to right, Duane Allen lead, Joe Bonsall tenor, Richard Sturben bass and William Lee Golden baritone. The band actually started as the Oak Ridge Quartet, a gospel group in the 1940s, from my hometown of Oak Ridge Tennessee. In the 1970s, once the current line up was in place, they switched to country with the album Yall Come Back Saloon. They actually fired William at one point because he refused to shave his hair and beard, but the backlash from fans was so great that they fired his replacement and got William back.

Everyone loves “Elvira.” The deep base is the young guy, not beardo! There was a sitcom, “Mike And Molly” and Mike had a tape stuck in the cassette player of his car. Of course it was the Oak Ridge Boys. In a hilarious scene all the men of the show were in the garage working on the car and singing “Elvira!” You should check out the show sometime. Another great country tune from the same era is Brookes & Dunn, “My Maria,” a favorite of my late wife.

In the summer of '81, my grandparents took my sister and my cousin and me on a trip all over the western US, just the five of us in a '73 Dodge Dart pulling a Coleman camper. We saw all the major national parks, and I started first grade a few weeks late. From putting 15K miles on the car, we grew so very familiar with all of the hits of that year (Bette Davis Eyes, Queen of Hearts, Don't Stop Believing) but my favorite was Elvira because of Richard Sterban's giddy-up-a-oom-papa-mow-mow. As you know by now, Richard the dark, was the bass. Their song called, "Dream On," is one of my all-time favs, because it's rare that you hear a bass on lead vocals in country music.😊😊😊

Interesting that you would pick this song this weekend. I saw them perform this song live in 1985 on the mall grounds in Washington DC at a July 4th celebration concert. The concert also included sets from Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, New Edition, The Four Tops and The Beach Boys.

This group is older than most people think. The original Oak Ridge Boys were a gospel group that was formed in the 1940’s. The original quartet got their name by playing at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to the people working on the Manhattan Project in World War II. They had many changes of singers over the years. They continued as a gospel group into the 1970’s when they changed focus to country.

hahah love the reaction! This is a fun song. I love The Oak Ridge Boys so much. 'Leavin' Lousiana in the Broad Daylight', and 'Y'all Come Back Saloon' are among my favorites, also 'Come on In'. Honestly they have so many great songs. ALSO - The Oak Ridge Boys Christmas album (1982) is EXCELLENT and one of my Top 3 Christmas albums of all time. I would recommend listening to the WHOLE thing, nearer that time of year. :) But I definitely recommend taking a listen to, 'Thank God for Kids'.

Back in the days when the Billboard Top 40 included different genres of music, a track like "Elvira" which was a huge #1 country record could cross-over to the Pop chart and do well. "Elvira peaked @ #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1981 and won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Group.

A great pick for Female Friday is one of the first and biggest crossover hits of the late seventies "Don't it make my brown eyes blue" by Crystal Gayle. A month at number one on the Country chart, three weeks at number two on the Pop chart, only kept from number one by the second-most overplayed song of the Seventies, "You light up my life" by Debbie Boone. (Most overplayed was "Love will keep us together" by The Captain and Tennile.)

"Elvira" was a crossover hit. We took to the dance floor at the club when it started playing. And when Richard's deep voice came in ... WOW! Richard Sterban, BTW, is the bass man with the shortest hair in the picture standing next to the guy on the right with the long hair. If you like bass voices, give a listen to "Mr. Bass Man" by Johnny Crystal. I think he's a one-hit wonder from the 60s but I could be wrong.

Hi guys, I have only recently found you and enjoying the content, please keep it up. Richard Sturbin, NOT the one on the left but in the silk suit (3rd in the pic up front) is awesome! As a bass singer and a DJ (not really a country fan) from the late 70's to 1990 I enjoyed a whole array of artists. ( I look forward to more DISCO too haha) you will enjoy that era for some country artist, I call them crossover/rock-a-billy. They take the sound so much from blues and the 50's transition from country to rock (Conway Twitty vs Elvis era). So many artist you have reacted to already fall into that, Kenny Rodgers for one, Dolly for me even falls into that. would be a great listen especially for Amber but you both would like. I will sent you more, but 1 at a time for you since I'm sure you have a lot. Again, thanks for the content! I will be listening for more...

First of all, The Oak Ridge Boys are a wonderful group to deep dive into. They have so many great songs, some very country, others more modern country. Alabama is another great band along the same lines as ORB. If you'd like to hear an incredible deep voice you have to try Josh Turner; I'd suggest Long Black Train, but Would You Go With Me is a very close second.
