The more I watched this video the more it made sense to me. He is simply walking down the sidewalk trying to keep his stride. Not threatening, not doing a thing to anyone. As he tries to get to his destination, everyone and everything gets in HIS way without any regard for him. Some are angry, some are forceful, some aren’t even paying attention. It’s brilliant. We are born with a purpose and a focus. The “longer we walk” the disruptions and distractions are many and varied. We tend to lose our focus trying to adjust for others. It’s really very deep and I love this video as well as this song.

The music video is an homage to a video of the English group Massive Attack's "Unfinished Symphony" from 1991. In that video, the singer walks down a street in a single shot confidently and not caring mostly with her eyes closed and never bumps into anyone or anything. Here, the singer walks down the street in a single shot with his eyes open, confidently and not caring, and bumps into lots of people and things. To me, the song is basically saying you're born, you're alone, you try to find someone, scratch for money, and you go down the only road you know, and then you die and you can't change that path. So, he's going down that road and he doesn't care about anything.

I love this song and it's very deep. Even the video has meaning. His walk is a representation of the path of life, the people he encounters are the people and events that we encounter through our lives. The guy with the fridge on a dolly is like a big life altering event that was narrowly avoided. The people he bumped into are the little speed bumps that help shape our lives. The girl in the car is a bad relationship, the car is the large event that he was able to cross and move on from but she didn't move on as easily and followed representing how a love can effect your life long term even after it's ended. The lady he knocked down was like an encounter where he hurt someone else's life in some way and he was recognizing that but still life continues without looking back. The girl that checked him out was like a perfect fling that came and went and left only a fond memory. The car that actually made him pause was a major life event that held him in place for a while, maybe good maybe bad but significant enough to make his life take pause but in the end it too did pass and life continued as always. And the end when the other four followed with him is like the people in your life who are there for the long haul whoever they may be they stick with you till the end while still living their lives respectively.

First, the orchestral riff is sampled from the Andrew Loog Oldham orchestral arrangement of the Rolling Stones' song "The Last Time" which resulted in the Stones suing the Verve, and originally getting 100% writing credit for the song and all royalties from the song going to the Stones until 2019, when the Glitter Twins ceded the credit to Richard Ashcroft, the song's actual writer. The way I looked at the music video + lyrics is this: he’s walking by people, not moving out of the way for them, and bumping right into them. But what else is happening? They’re doing the same exact thing back to him. It’s to show that none of us are special, we are all the same. We are all in the bittersweet symphony, we are all trying to make ends meet, we’re all a slave to the money then we die. And we’re a million different people from one day to the next but we can’t change our mould. If you look up the history of this song, the lyrics come to life. This man was sued so bad that he didn’t make anything off this song, and this song was POPULARRRRRR in the late 90’s and early 2000’s (thanks cruel intentions movie)! The fact that he kept playing this song this song for pretty much free, says A LOT. I’m glad Richard Ashcroft FINALLY got his song back in 2019! Too bad it was 20+ years later and the song has been milked dry! They need to put this song in a new movie or have the tik tok comminity (can’t believe I’m saying this) get ahold of this masterpiece and get everyone listening to this again so Richard and the rest of the verve get their fair share of royalties.

Allen Klein the Rolling Stones Mgr who forced Ashcroft to relinquish the song’s royalties and create a new songwriting credit: Jagger/Richards/Ashcroft. I think the continuous symphonic element of the song, besides being beautiful, suggests the continuous journey of life he's talking about. Kind of like his stride...how it doesn't change in the video no matter what is going on around him (even when he's kind of rude). The sound always seems to be climbing but without resolution, while having a hint of melancholy and resolve.

Hi guys - love your reactions. This was filmed in London and if you live there, people aimlessly walk into you all the time, focussed on their own world and often not caring about what is around them...it can be exhausting walking down the street avoiding all these people who expect you to move for them...so you did a good job catching that message. One day my husband walked like that because he was tired of getting out of the way and he got absolutely pummeled...it really felt like a metaphor for life. Richard Ashcroft and the Verve are way too under rated. Some great Verve songs are "The drugs don't work" and "Lucky Man" and if you want to check out Richard Ashcroft on his own "Break the Night with Color" is an amazing song. Fun Fact: the woman who shouts for a while at him for walking over her car in the video is his wife.

An excellent song this was in a movie back in the '90s called Cruel Intentions Ryan Phillipe, Sara Michelle Geller it's a coming-of-age movie it's probably one of the best movies of the '90s, you really should watch it.

Cruel Intentions was a modern version of an older film called Dangerous Liaisons (of which there's been several versions, but possibly the most famous was the 1988 film starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Uma Thurman, and Keanu Reeves). Those films were based on a French novel from 1782 (yep, you read that date correctly) which is called Les Liaisons Dangereuses in the original French.

One of the greatest songs ever written. Period. The only problem with the video is that it can get a little distracting and you forget about the lyrical poetry of the song. It's beautiful.

I still find it funny that Bittersweet Symphony is the only Verve song people react to on KZbin. When the single was first released back in '97 it didn't sound anything like a Verve song at all, yet it's more or less the only song they are known for today. Check out some of their early music to hear the drastic difference. Take your pick from "Slide Away", "Gravity Grave", "All In The Mind", "One Way To Go", "Star Sail", "Already There", "South Pacific (Live)", "Butterfly", "She's A Superstar" (full length version), "6 O'Clock", or "Beautiful Mind".

Amber must, must, MUST react to this song. Female Friday will not be complete without it. Written by Helen Reddy and Ray Burton. Helen Reddy is an Australian singer/actress. She recorded this song in 1971. "I Am Woman", is such a powerful and impactful song. So inspirational that it became the anthem for the Women's Equal Rights movement. So know you see why you must do this iconic song for Female Friday. ✌️

As others have said "The Drugs Don't Work", "Sonnet" and "Lucky Man" are all amazing songs. I'd recommend "Lucky Man" next as it's really positive vibe is a nice counterpoint to "Bitter Sweet Symphony".

One cannot listen to "Bitter Sweet Symphony" without thinking of the movie "Cruel Intentions"! Even though the song was first released in 1997, its legacy lies largely in the 1999 teen film, in which it soundtracks the final scene. I've always loved this song, and the movie was great too; although, it has a tragic ending. Thank you for this reaction!
