This was a big hit for the Mary Jane Girls in 1985..the single topped Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart in April 1985 and remained atop the chart for two weeks. It also reached the top 10 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, peaking at number seven on the Hot 100 in June 1985 and remained in the top 40 for 12 weeks.

The Mary Jane's Girls were Rick James' answer to Prince's girl group Vanity 6, you should check out their biggest hit, Nasty Girl, written and produced by Prince. Fun fact: The lead singer of Vanity 6 was given the name Vanity by Prince, her real name was Denise Matthews and she was discovered by Rick James. Prince "stole" her from Rick and that fueled an already contentious rivalry between the two men! 💖💖

I was a bartender in the 80's. The clothes, hair, and makeup weren't unusual. I even wore bustiers, garter belts, and seamed stockings. Y'all talking about the cornrows, um, Stevie Wonder was rocking the look in the late 1970s. (His 1980 album, "Hotter Than July," shows him sporting them.) And, take a look at Peaches & Herb from 1979 to 1982. The "Peaches" of that era--Linda Greene--sported the style (check out performances for songs like "Reunited," "Shake Your Groove Thing" and "Roller-Skatin' Mate"). And, um, then there's always the legendary "10" herself--Bo Derek.

I'm guessing Jordan wouldn't be able to handle "Nasty Girl" by Prince's proteges _Vanity 6_ . 🤔 "Pretty Mess"? "Darling Nikki?" I don't think I've ever suggested either of those. 😄 Amber, a lot of girls and women had a head full of beads on their braids like hers when I was little. When I was around eight years old and had hair down to my waist, my mom put a _lot_ of beads in my braids. They were heavy, and I only had about half of what this singer has. I put a few in my niece's braids last summer and she loved it, but I didn't know if she would, so I only put four on each braid. I'll be braiding it again and adding a lot more. 🙂

Big huge smile on this grandma's face. I instantly remembered all the words and those harmonics. I am moving kids. Every day brings me back. The Mary Jane Girls are going to be in my head the rest of the day. Listen to that guitar strumming, so much a part of the 70 s and 80 s instrumentals. Check out "La Chic" as well. You will see a guitarist doing a section on the guitar that is part of so many artists catalogue up to the current era. I will not give his name. He got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the last five years for his contribution as a producer. His initials are N. R. There's your clues. Check out " La Chic". So much fun. No kidding, my understanding is that before doing this channel all he'd ever heard was rap which intentionally uses some of the most ugly words like it's nothing. So now you've got the key to unlock the door at my house is practically giving him the sweats?! Come ON!

Come on, you knew this would be a bit risque if Rick James had a part in it, ha. Love the Mary Jane Girls! This song never, ever gets old. You might also want to try their cover of "Walk Like a Man," it's fabulous!

There were other girl groups in the early to mid-eighties with a similar look and sound, Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6 among them. Early, early Madonna, like 1983 Madonna, dressed kind of similar too and I included her with groups like this at the time. I called them back then the stretch-lace brigade.

Besides Jojo McDuffie (the Mary Jane Girls' lead singer) and Rick James, Patrice Rushen used to rock that hairstyle.
