David Gilmour said this a story of his life. I went to the Pulse tour in 1994 at the Rose Bowl here, and when they played this song, it was pure magic. The crowd of 90,000, was silent. Amazing.

The lyrics are just epic… "Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us, to a glimpse of how green it was on the other side." Just awesome. Polly Samson, David Gilmour's wife, who wrote a lot of lyrics for the album "The Division Bell", did an absolutely great job here. Also, David Gilmour is The Guitar God, whether it's an electric, slide or acoustic guitar. No one can play like David Gilmour, with such emotion.

This album is so damn unappreciated on the text level just because Walters ain't a part of it. For me it's just as good as any of their other stuff, if not better than some. And I'm not biased because it was the first PF album I've listened and it started my journey with them.

This song is from the point of view of an aging man reflecting on his life with his band mates who were brothers before ego destroyed their friendship. It’s a shame that the rift between Rodger Waters and David Gilmore will probably never be repaired, and Richard Wright has passed, so it most likely will never be repaired. That’s what makes this song so sad to me. The emotional guitar solo just adds to the emotion.
@rubicon-oh9km

Right on point, Bart. Gilmour and Waters will never repair the rift. Their English egos are bigger than their talent if that's even possible.

@@rubicon-oh9km mostly it's Waters, he turned out to be a seriously cunning stunt in my opinion. I think Gilmour knows it and just doesn't want to waste the effort on trying to mend a fence that doesn't want to stay mended.

You guys nailed it. Your interpretation of the song was spot on. It’s about growing up and loosing the “wonder and magic “ that was childhood and the early teen years……when “anything was possible”. And yes……the guitar and instruments at the end part perfectly match the emotion the lyrics are describing. For a long time Comfortably Numb and On the Turning Away, we’re fighting to be my favourite PF song…….then I heard this song and it instantly became my all time favourite. The “emotion in that guitar solo brings tears to my eyes. The nostalgia is overwhelming. Great job, as usual.❤️

That was the last time they toured. Back in 94-95. Minneapolis Metrodome 6.22.1994 That whole album is timeless. Their tour concept was "we want the audience to focus on the show and the music, not the old guy's on stage." This was released after the wall came down in Europe. They are the one band that actually owed all of it's touring elements. Stage, lighting,sound,production.

Yes, this is "Pink Floyd Light" instrumentally and production wise, but still GRRRREAT. Gilmour is incredible, Gilmour plus Waters is Otherworldly.

That four-note refrain Gilmour first plays at the 9:02 mark is his greatest since the one he created for Shine On You Crazy Diamond. A beautiful sigh.

This song is about nostalgia, regret, and the end of things, as time runs its course. It’s the final song of Pink Floyd’s penultimate album.

Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"... I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen. I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold. All of us fortunate enough to have seen this show live were in a TRANCE.... MESMERIZED the entire show... as you can imagine. We walked out saying.... What did we just witness? That was out of this world incredible. The Red Fender Stratocaster he used for this concert in the Guitar Collector World is ....PRICELESS

High Hopes is there with Comfortably Numb in my opinion. You should check out both at the live Pulse concert with the added benefit of actually getting to see David Gilmour play these solos. A long time fan, this concert was the pinnacle of their career in my opinion.

The Pulse concert is the best record of post Waters Floyd with almost every track a classic. My favourites are are ‘Sorrow and ‘Run like Hell’

@@scifimonkey3 I'll be forever torn between Delicate Sound of Thunder and Pulse, both will always be equaly magical to me. However David's strat tone is more ethereal on the Division Bell tour, the Dopolas has a lot to do with that, it smoothed the tone more

I know how obsessed Amber is with drums, so you should check Nightwish’s tribute to this song. They put the rock into it and the drummer went to town in a good way. It’s a must for a channel that is really into metal.

This is another great example of their musical creativity. The way they start with the single piano notes that sound as if a child was playing on a toy piano that we have all seen.Just a simple effect that sets up the entire song.They we’re masters at putting you in the right head space from start to finish.So damn good.😎

A brilliant evocative song that just grabs you and stops you in tracks. Every time I hear it I feel like crying, an incredible feeling of loss, regret, nostalgia and weirdly at the end a kind of feeling of healing and defiance. A true classic.
