This song is about the fear of adandonment. Lead singer Rivers' father was an alcoholic who left when River was young. Years later, as a teenager, there's a stepfather in the picture, and when Rivers finds his step dad's beer in the fridge, he thinks he's an alcoholic who's going to leave, too. The chorus is made for singing along to, as loudly as possible, in a moving car. I sang myself hoarse to this song a few times in my cousin's car, and then in my own. "Say It Ain't So" is definitely in the upper echelon of Weezer songs.

Guys, this song is about ALCOHOLISM and it's destructive impacts on families. That's why it says "Your drug is a heartbreaker." And the whole thing about writing about writing to his absent father and saying "Like father, stepfather, the son is drowning in the flood." It's about living with the very real impact alcoholism has on generations of families. There's a lot of alcoholism in my family (and my husband's), so this song hit me hard from the first time I heard it. And I love Weezer to this day. They are still making fantastic new music!

Ironically, Rivers later said that he was mistaken about the whole situation about alcohol and his father and step-father. They were simply just absent fathers, and weren't true alcoholics..

I'm an older rock fan. I always smile listening to Weezer. They have a fun alternative sound and can kick it as hard as anyone. Like a lot of great bands they have slowly built a catalog of great songs.

You've jumped to top-tier Weezer. "Island in the Sun" is mid-tier Weezer and "Buddy Holly" is pretty good. But "Say It Ain't So" is a masterpiece. I only wish you could've seen the video. It's just them performing the song in a room, but it showcases their personalities. The basic inspiration of the song is that Rivers Cuomo's father was an alcoholic who left the family when Rivers was a young child. Years later, a teenaged Rivers saw a beer in the refrigerator and panicked that his stepfather was also an alcoholic and was also going to leave the family. I agree with everyone who suggests The Sweater Song and Hashpipe.

"Hashpipe" is a Weezer song that I think you both will really enjoy. It's a relatively simple rocker with a really awesome guitar riff that is a whole vibe. The video is fun too, if you're able to watch that instead of having to do a lyric video for copyright (also, the lyric videos I've seen for it get the lyrics VERY wrong). Weezer has tons of great songs but "Hashpipe" is one of my faves from them and I'd love to see you react to it.

Saw them last weekend. Their concerts are great as they don't jack with the songs like some bands...just sing them straight while sounding like the album. When the first cords of this song started you could hear people all around go crazy. They nailed it with the crowd doing the "say it so" part at the top of our lungs. BTW, some of their post-90s stuff is good too (IMHO), like "Perfect Situation", "Pork and Beans" and "Beverly Hills". Their library is pretty big.

WHO told you not to pay attention to lyrics?!! There are some songs that absolutely hinge on the lyrics!! I understand if you can't follow everything though, as a lot of artists use deeper metaphors to express themselves. Weezer is pretty awesome, many grunge/ alternative bands wrote lyrics and sang about troubles in their lives. They just came out and said how they felt! "The Perfect Situation" by Weezer is great and you gotta check it out! Make sure you find the studio version because the music video is different and doesn't flow like it should. A lyric video would probably be fine as long as it's the studio/album version.

The song is one of alcohol abuse that frontman, River Cuomo, wrote about his family issues, especially his step-father. The Heine at the beginning is about the beer etc... Great song. Check out Hashpipe

I freaking love this song. I don’t know what it is about this song, but my friend and I used to play it every night we went out to the bar (which was a lot in my early 20s) and get super emo about it. And everyone knew when Abby and Alicia played Weezer that it was probably time to go 😂 Ironic that our drinking song was about the destruction of alcoholism. I didn’t know what the song was about until years later, though. I know the videos get blocked easily, but this song also has a good video that reminds me of hanging out with my friends in the 90s. “Hash Pipe” is my fave Weezer song behind this one. Definitely worth checking out.

My favorite Weezer song, bar none. Rivers Cuomo's voice just gets me every time. I've been a Weezer fan for 25 years, and I love that you've become fans as well. For your next one, I recommend "Pork and Beans", "Hash Pipe", or "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived." OR you could do "The End of the Game", which includes a guitar riff that is a tribute to Eddie Van Halen.
