"You've Really Got a Hold On Me" is my favorite Smokey song. I'm sure it's others' too. Smokey is one of the biggest class acts of all time. You'll never find anyone with a bad thing to say about the man. In the 80s, there was a band called ABC who did a great song called "When Smokey Sings". You may want to put that on your list.

Amber FYI in your Dad's defense, Johnnie Walker Scotch Whiskey is a premium brand sold in the States and in Europe. Johnnie Walker has different levels of whiskies, each identified by a different colour and each with a different price-tag. In order of least to most expensive, these are Johnnie Walker Red, Black, Double Black, Gold, Green, Platinum, and Blue. In terms of quality, the best Johnnie Walker label is Blue. Johnnie Walker Blue is the most coveted of the brand's line of blended whiskies. However, Johnnie Walker Red is a best-seller and has won many awards. That being said, if there is a whisky that can be justifiably described as being smooth, Johnnie Walker Blue Label is it. ... It is very good and probably worthy of being considered an exceptionally good whisky, especially amongst whiskies in continuous production and so widely available. So according to Red label vs Blue your Dad might have been saying you might not be the highest end of a Premium brand, (in your family) but your the most Popular... The GOAT of the brand (family).

What Smokey was doing that you’re referring to, is called “head voice.” It’s done with the false chords (falsetto) but with breath support and a bit of chest register mixed in, then just add a bit of volume and pressure for compression. It’s used a lot in Pop Music and all kinds of forms of Rock, Blues, including Rock/Glam Rock, and Metal.

Great group. Lots of hits. The group started in 1955 as 5 teenagers from Detroit. Three of them had known each other for years. After a couple years one of the guys (Bobby Rogers who I think sometimes shared vocal lead duties with Smokey) left to join the army. He had a sister named Claudette who was singing with a girl group. She took her brother's place with this group and around 58 or 59 the band became The Miracles (they had used a different name before) and also after 2 years of dating Smokey and Claudette got married. After a couple more years of trying to start a family (Claudette had several miscarriages) she decided not to tour any more. So they made the live appearances without her but she sang on the records. Back in the day, most TV appearances were lip synched which is probably why you heard her but didn't see her. (Nice catch Amber) She continued that for a few years until Smokey came down with a bad case of Asian Flu and was bedridden for a couple months. During that time Claudette filled in for Smokey on tour. So I guess the answer to the question was there a woman in The Miracles was yes and no. LOL.

My favorite SR & Miracles song is Would I Love You. You've Really Got A Hold On Me is another good one, & was covered by The Beatles on one of their earliest albums. Love this , Smokey is played in the sub culture of northern soul. With is a British dance hall and style culture from the north of England in the 1970-80s. It’s still going if today. You should react to Jackie Wilson your love keeps lifting us higher. Merry Christmas 🎄

I was born in 1961. My oldest sister was 14 years older then me. We grew up outside Detroit and these songs make up my earliest memories. My mother was from England and it was all Motown and the Beatles. America's poets - Bob Dylan - Merle Haggard - and Smokey Robinson.

A few years ago (six max) I saw Smokey perform a concert for two straight hours with just a five minute break for one of his back up singers to sing a song. He wore a red leather suit and silk shirt the whole time LOL. He sounded a little more gravelly just because of age, but still PERFECT.
