The pride of the Welsh valleys, Tom Jones' first big break came when he was asked to sing a guide vocal on a song destined for English popstar Sandie Shaw. On hearing the track, Shaw immediately knew a star was born. That tune (with Tom on vocals) was 'It's Not Unusual' - a colossal domestic hit that put him on the map overnight. "The Green Green Grass of Home" would bring tears to your eyes. Tom Jones was indeed very big. And it's worth considering that perhaps singers at the time were possibly better than some singers now because they had to rely on their own voices and charisma to pull off a performance. They worked harder and couldn't fall back on lip-syncing, autotune, backup dancers, pyrotechnics or other distractions. They could be alone on stage and mesmerize audiences. Bob Dylan performing at the Royal Albert in London from the film "Don't Look Back" had that gift. Not such a classic voice, but so compelling.

Tom is from Wales, and the Welsh are famous for their beautiful singing. He certainly proves that theory. The other thing about Tom that I think is interesting is that his voice is very little changed from when he hit the scene in the mid 60s, to where he is now in the year 2021. In that he is very like Steve Tyler who sounds the same today as when he began his career.
@xScooterAZx2 жыл бұрын
Steven Tyler can no longer sing as well as he did back then. He has singers to fill out the notes he cant reach these days. Still,when he does tour it all comes together enough that you cant tell the difference.

Yes, the Welsh have that amazing singing voice; where it began I don't know, but I'm glad they do. But Tom Jones does more; see the way he plants himself squarely on the floor for stability. There is so much power coming out of him, in that song, and you notice how his hand shakes with the resonance that he builds. Absolute masterly performance!

Did you check the comments too see if 20 - 50 people had already left this comment? Because I see this same sentiment commented on every reaction video to an old song by people under like 40 and it's quite bizarre how unoriginal it comes across. The worst part is it often has the phrase "And remember", or even worse "What you kids don't understand is," which is hilarious, do you really think anyone does think they had autotune in the 60s??

Definitely Delilah. I'm from Wales, maybe half hour drive from Sir Tom Jones' birthplace. It was a big thing when we held mini Eisteddfod's for St. Davids day at school; lot's of singing, dancing awards in specific subjects etc. Then one year the school decided to try and ban us singing Delilah (back in early 2000's for whatever reason). They refused to play it so some of the school orchestra kids played it anyway and we all sang along. They kept trying until I left school becase 'it was inappropriate' but we always found a way.

I remember the shows in color, with his shirt open and his scarf and tight pants. All the women screaming and throwing their bras and panties at him. Tom Jones would dry his sweat with his scarf and throw it back at the audience. I remember him drying other body parts with his scarf and/or handkerchief and throwing them to the audience. I was maybe 8 and it was 1972ish and I learned what it means to have power and absolute domination of the moment. What a voice, Tom Jones is his own category.

There is a thing called the Tom Jones effect. It's that one precise moment when his voice triggers a reaction in every female on the planet ( and men too). That moment hits at different times for different people. I've watched countless reactions to Sir Tom over the past 2 years and in every one of those videos, you can clearly see it happen when it does hit them. For example here in this reaction, at the 3:06 mark, you can see on Amber's lovely face when Tom's voice makes her swoon, again like every other female on Earth past, present, & future... If you watch some of Tom's previous concerts from the 60's & 70's, you'll see the front of the stage covered with ladies panties, bras, and hotel room keys that the audience had tossed to him - LOL! I remember being a little kid & thinking "what is wrong with these women? Ew, why are they throwing their underwear at him? How gross, they're all crazy!" Now I get it!
