From the 1976 album A New World Record, Jeff Lynne wrote this tune about suffering the loss of a love. From the Spanish orchestral beginning, it rocks on into a masterpiece. The beautiful strings throughout make an enjoyable setting for a great tune. Patti Quatro does the vocals, uncredited, during the "higher and higher" part. Such a great song. Great reaction. Yes, you noticed the two techniques of playing orchestral stringed instruments. Bowing......stroking the bow across the strings. Pizzicato......plucking the strings with the fingers. You'll also notice the string glissandos beginning at 4:57 are played with 32nd notes which gives a Vivaldi-esque¹ feel to the piece which heretofore, had been quite content with half, quarter and eighth notes. ¹ Vivaldi was known for writing very rapidly played movements in his compositions

Now you need to react to "Roll Over Beethoven"(a great rocking song), and "Fire On High"(A great instrumental song) both by ELO.

The original band members here.. And yes, those are cellos. I saw the violinist play that same blue violin at one of their concerts back in 1977 at the Cow Palace in South San Francisco. One of the best concerts I've ever been to, topped off with a laser light show off and on during the performance..

This played this song a hell of a lot in the mid-1970s. Loved it! I was so lucky to be born when I did.

It's important to understand that when Jeff Lynne split from Roy Wood to form ELO, it was due mainly to what The Beatles were doing in 1967-1968! Lynne was heavily influenced by that sound of a few strings blending with rock and roll ("Strawberry Fields Forever", "I Am The Walrus", "All You Need Is Love", "Hello-Goodbye", etc ..) and simply took it a step further by integrating the sound of classical strings into rock and roll as THE sound of the Electric Light Orchestra! Lynne is a musical genius who doesn't get the accolades he is so richly deservant of! He is every bit as gifted as Lennon and McCartney!

Jeff lyn has over a hundred different instruments in his house and can play them all, his house is also used as a studio he has gold and platinum records all around the place. He has written so many songs for other singers. He's great, thank you. 🇬🇧 🌹

"Fire on High," "Boy Blue," "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" are all EPIC ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA tunes to check out! Rock you, you two!! SORRY about your Bengals. As a die-hard 49ers fan, I can relate this year. Tough games in totally different ways.

Yes, the "big one" is the cello. 🤭 I recommend adding *Xanadu* (1980;) to your movie watch list... Yeh, it's kinda campy, but it's a cult classic and still one of my favs. You'll love the VERY early 80s look + Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly & lots of ELO (aka bangin' soundtrack)!

In 1978, ELO did a live concert tour in Japan. It was a sold-out show, but my friends went and saw ELO. Forty some years later, we all still love ELO. They are still popular in Japan. It would be best if you watched ELO concert in the UK in 2018. I love them.

ELO's music was awesome back in the day (yeah i am that old) but honestly it was so well crafted it really is still relevant. Jeff Lynne is an underrated performer, writer and producer.

There was a bit of controversy when this song came out on the meaning of the lyrics. Some even claimed this was an anti-abortion song! But Jeff Lynne set everyone straight by saying it was a song about lost love, that love itself is a "livin' thing".
