To me this song is about the nostalgia, rebelliousness and confusion of being a teenager. 1979 is when the singer/writer would have been a kid coming into adolescence. It's artsy in that it is more about painting the picture than describing it literally. Being an outcast teen, not knowing where you'll end up, feeling the urgency of the current moment, not worried about tomorrow, not caring how things turn out just going with the times and the music, to me, sounds like that too, it feels like that. It's why I love this song.

Wow, thank u so much for putting it all into perspective, so nostalgic for me as a kid growing up in the 70s..... The 90's bands were so kickass! I remember my daughter and me watching VH1 and MTV, we loved Smashing Pumpkins!!! We also loved Smashmouth, Maroon 5, Lit, Everclear, Green Day, Weezer, and No Doubt, omg I can go on and on! YESSSSSS! It's long past time you did a Pumpkins song!!! (HInt: Please do Live next - "Lightning Crashes" is a phenomenal song.) "1979" is maybe my favorite of theirs, but in the 90s, these guys ruled alternative radio. "Today", "Bullet With Butterfly Wings", "Zero", "Tonight, Tonight", "Disarm", "Cherub Rock", "Rhinoceros", "The Everlasting Gaze"... the list goes on and on. Billy Corgan is a truly underrated vocalist, and I'm glad you finally got to hear him. And yes, pleeeeez do more 90s. Other suggestions - "Sweetness & Light" by Lush; "Here's Where the Story Ends" by The Sundays; "Fait Accompli" by Curve; "Carolyn's Fingers" by Cocteau Twins; "Closer to FIne" by Indigo Girls. By the way, all of these suggestions would work for Female Friday.

This is my very favorite band! I love Billy Corgan and this song was basically the song of my senior year so it has heavy nostalgia for me. “I know you better than you fake it,” best lyric. This is probably their most well-known song and I like it, but in my opinion they have better ones that are more definitive of their sound. I could suggest so many but I’ll start with “Cherub Rock,” “Rhinoceros,” “Today,” “Disarm,” and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings.” They definitely go harder and while they don’t consider themselves grunge, they were very much grunge-adjacent. Their wall of sound, fuzzy guitars on some of the earlier songs is very grunge imo. And yes, Billy does have a very distinctive voice. Not everyone likes it but tome it sounds like the 90s. I hope you’ll check them out again! And yes, I definitely tee pee’d back in high school. This whole video looks like being a teen in the 90s 😂 (I could’ve also sworn you guys did this one!)

Such a great song. I was 18 in 1979. I can totally relate to this song. Having a band play in my house and all my friends over their partying it up. lol. It was the 70s. We didn't have cell phones. Looking back on it now the 70s were so carefree. Could be because I was viewing it from the eyes of a teen. I lived in Florida during my teen years. 90s songs...What is Love, Torn, Smells like Teen Spirit, Sweet Child of Mine, Believe, I Want it That Way, Livin' La Vida Loca, Glycerine, Just a Girl, Intestate Love Song, One Headlight, for just a few 90s tunes. @jimschroeder11762 жыл бұрын
@@jeffreydavid6794 fair enough. I actually like a lot of 90's bands, including The Smashing Pumpkins. I do think 90's music was better than the 80's, but nothing compares to the late 60's to mid 70's. During that time artists were free to create whatever music they wanted all under the name "rock". In the late 70's and 80's record labels started labelling bands by the type of music they were supposed to produce, and bands were not really allowed to venture outside that label (ie. Heavy metal, punk, etc..). Music became quite formulated, and songs themselves had to fit airplay time, so rarely went over 5 minutes. You started to see some artistry come back in the 90's, but it still had to be radio friendly lenghts of songs. That's my opinion anyway, because I lived through all those decades, but music is a matter of taste. Good on you for recognizing the 70's though, even though it was before your time. 😉
@jeffreydavid67942 жыл бұрын
@@jimschroeder1176 No you are exactly right. I stand corrected and I agree with everything you said. I was just caught up in the moment and I said something stupid. Haha. The majority of my favorite bands come from the 60's and 70's. I've been a serious musician my whole life and I had older siblings so I also grew up listening to and being influenced as a musician by bands like the doors, Pink Floyd, Yes, Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, the Beatles, Deep Purple and I could go on and on. As far as musicianship and song writing goes, you just can not compare bands like this with Any bands from the 90's. However the 90's still hold a special place in my heart since I grew when bands like REM, Sound Garden, STP, No Doubt, Radiohead, Weezer, Live, etc. were doing their thing. That was back when we could actually watch music videos on MTV and VH1. And the music then was certainly a lot more "real" than the crap we have today. I have actually never been a huge fan of the Smashing Pumkins. Billy's voice is just too much for me. I do like 1979 though and it brought back memories.

Hard to separate the man from the artist I'll agree, especially since all the weirdness lately, but there's no denying his talent, it was a great show and he did all of his best and most popular stuff for us, Tainted Love Sweet Dreams , personal jesus, it was great stuff✌😎 and the rainbow that appeared seconds before he came after all the Dark Skies had cleared was a little bit ironic I'd say, like someone looking down and winking or something I don't know it was kinda hilarious 🤘🌈

We played the song Zero by them, it was fun to play. Smashing Pumpkins are unique, nobody really sounds like them. Almost every song is really good, and they all sound different, most more upbeat then this. Kind of I guess, they are a hard band to explain. This is the genres they belong to: Alternative rock, Hard rock, Shoegaze, Gothic rock, Psychedelic rock, Alternative/Indie

Everyone has that one song that when they hear it, they're instantly transported back in time when they heard it. For me, this is that song. Whenever I hear 1979, I'm instantly transported to the back of my parents car, when I was 4 years old, cruising down the Las Vegas strip at night, seeing all the lights out the window. Fantastic memories growing up in Vegas!

YAAAAAS!! You guys finally got around to the Smashing Pumpkins! One of my favourite bands from the 90's! I could write a whole essay on 90's suggestions, but for now, I'm gonna stick with Smashing Pumpkins suggestions. Start with "Bullet With Butterfly Wings", "Tonight, Tonight", "Rocket", "Cherub Rock", "The End Is The Beginning Is The End" (from the Batman & Robin soundtrack), "Rhinoceros", "Today", and "Slunk". Trust me, you're gonna have so much fun going down this rabbit hole!

A great 90s band. You should try 'today' or ' disarm'. Or for heavier pumpkins try 'zero' or ' bullet with butterfly wings'

The 1990s and the 1960s were the greatest decades for music in the modern era. If you dive into popular and alternative music from the 90s, you will be astonished by the quality and variety of lyricism, voice and instrumentafion compared with now.
@jasonbuter94932 жыл бұрын
didn't see it mentioned in the comments I scrolled by, so I'll point out, this song has a 'sequel', a few years later they did a song titled 'Perfect'. They got most of the original actors back as well.

One of my all time favs. This song always puts me in a nostalgic trance. Its the sonic equivalent of looking off into the horizon during the sunset to me. If you want all the lyrics obviously you can google them, but here's the chorus if it helps: That we don't even care To shake these zipper blues And we don't know Just where our bones will rest To dust I guess Forgotten and absorbed Into the earth below

Any time anyone reacts to the Pumpkins, I have to recommend "Mayonnaise". It's off their break-through "Siamese Dream" album, and was never a single, but it is one of my favorite songs of all time!

WOW..... A great Smashing Pumpkins time. Big change in my life for sure with this song! It was 1996 and I was moving from North Carolina to the DC metro area. Going back and forth getting our stuff listening to this song on that lovely interstate. I was in my 20s with in my thoughts. Great times and adventure for sure. The song is about the lead singers Billy Corgan's life in 1979 at 12 years old. I saw an interview with him back in the 90s.

This not what they usually sound like. This is a unique song - they really didn't do another like it. The Pumpkins are a whole world. Jimmy Chamberlain is an underrated genius of a drummer. Some of the tracks from Pisces Iscariot show his talents best. - Starla is incredible - recorded in Billy Corgan's apartment on Paulina St. In Chicago - you can hear a police siren serendipitously howl just before the final guitar solo starts.

That's what they sound like to me. It's similar to a lot of their top songs.

Perfect (on Adore) is the spiritual successor to 1979 and has a similar sound. However, you're right that it's not a typical Pumpkins song, if there is such a thing.
@adnap2 жыл бұрын
Actually, Perfect is very similar and sounds like it could have been a revisit to 1979. I always thought they were companion songs.

Omg, Jimmy Chamberlin is EVERYTHING!!! When I was pregnant with my 3rd child, I was going out to meet up with some friends. I was taking the L, and what would usually be a super easy from the L stop to the venue (Beat Kitchen) seemed REALLY long, as it was a hot summer night, and being pregnant is like having your own personal furnace 🤣🥵. So as I was passing by Chicago Music Exchange, I could see that they were having an event, and all the doors and windows were open, and the A/C was blowing out. So I decided to stop in to cool down abd take a break before I continued on. Well, as I stepped in and tried to find a place to hang among the crowd, I realized that the event I had stumbled into was JIMMY FREAKING CHAMBERLIN!!! He was drumming live in store to Pumkins tracks and telling stories about how the songs came about, and stories about the road, and I was absolutely starstruck!!! After I'd cooled down and had enough energy to continue on to Beat Kitchen, I was still in a daze, not believe my luck! When I got there, I was telling my friends (some who had come in from around the country, some who were about to go onstage, and some who had just gotten off stage and let me take a load off and hang with them in merch) "you'll never BELIEVE where I just came from!!!" 🤩

@@mamatay7 amazing story - reminds me of how incredible Chicago is and how important the L is so important to the culture and the city - going to the beat kitchen - probably you were on the brown line? Best view of the transforming city as you pass along that in my opinion. - especially as you go along Paulina and it rides very high up to pass over the Ravenswood metra commuter rail tracks. Jimmy is amazing - if you can find it (you probably can) listen to his jazz album. It is GOOD - not self indulgent AT ALL - this jazz album is what convinced me that (I’ll just say it) Jimmy is a better drummer than ginger baker! Come at me internet.

This was a great reaction. Very on point. I was 12 in 1979. It was a very carefree time, and also into the 80's. And I still felt like a kid when this song came out. The 90's had a very 1970's feel to it, if that makes sense. 90's suggestion: Cumbersome. By Seven Mary Three. Please and Thank You.
