He was with James Gang first as a lot of people commented “Funk 49” then went solo with Rocky Mountain High & Life’s Been Good as hits. That is a fun song and video off the album But Seriously Folks. You both would enjoy reacting to that song. As a solo artist he co-wrote and performed the song “In The City” for the cult classic movie “The Warriors” and recorded with the Eagles for their Long Run Album. Prior to that he was one of the guitarist on the Hotel California song that you reacted to. Joe like fellow Eagles member Timothy B. Schmidt has played with so many other artist in the recording studio it makes your head swim trying to list them.

I saw the Eagles several times in the 70's and they were rock before he joined, let me assure you of that. Anyone who says otherwise is an ignoramus. Definitely talkbox. This song was actually put out by his band Barnstorm, the band he formed after James Gang. He joined the Eagles in about '75, for the Hotel California album. It is him and Don Felder who do the duelling guitar solo on the song Hotel California. He's played with a few other bands at various times, too, and collabs. His solo stuff was interspersed throughout the '70s all the way to the teens (I think his last album was Analog Man around 2012). Last I heard he was touring with the Eagles again.

Joe Walsh: Member of “The Mesales” 1965-1967 Member of the “James Gang”1969-1972 Member of “Barnstorm”, but marketed as a “Solo Artist”1972-1975 Member of the “Eagles” 1975-Present Walsh did one solo project before he joined the Eagles, and many after the Eagles broke up from 1980-1992. He has also done solo work after the Eagles reformed. That was a “Talkbox” he was playing in “Rocky Mountain Way”. The song was released on the Barnstorm album “The smoker you drink, the player you get” in 1973. Walsh said on the Howard Stern show on June 12, 2012 that the song was inspired while he was cutting the grass in his front yard in Colorado. After pausing to look at the snow capped Mountains, he said seeing the snow capped Mountains, he thought to himself “The Rocky Mountain Way was better than the life I had” and made him realize he had no regrets leaving the James Gang. He said that event formed the basis for the song.

Voice box = a larynx, your vocal cords, which facilitate speech, shouting, and singing. TALK BOX = a guitar effect that turns a guitarist's mouth, skull, and throat into a speaker cabinet, allowing the guitarist to shape played notes into words and vocal expressions. Big difference.

"life's been good" "Meadows" "Ordinary average guy" "In the city" And it was a talkbox first and then guitar solo. He started with the james gang, did some solo work before being recruited by the eagles, and then continued his solo work after they broke up. And is of course back with the eagles until Glenn Frey died, i dont think they are doing anything or have since. (RIP Glenn)

I've played in bands for more than half my years. This is one of those songs everyone can pull out at any gig. There are others like "Free Bird" that most of the musicians I have ever known hate to play (not sure why - so many times we had to cover it in the early 1980's?) Back circa 1980, I actually dig the voice box thing with our lead guitar player. Joe did it himself if I recall. We had to rehearse it to keep it in sync. It is a pretty simple device - switch the amp over to a horn driver through a tube going into your mouth in front of the microphone. That is the sound.

The key points have been covered below: Walsh started with The James Gang, had his solo career (which this is from) and then joined the Eagles to replace Bernie Leadon, and the ultra-cool guitar sound is a Talk Box. What no one mentioned is that Walsh wrote this song about Nixon and Watergate: "He's telling us this and he's telling us that, changes it every day..." In live performance he would change the next line from "Casey's at bat" to "Nixon's at bat".

This is one of my favorites of his "solo" work. I'd suggest "Ashes, the Rain and I" among so many others. Thanks for covering this great song.

I love Joe Walsh’s solo work. His voice is so unique! He has been a lead guitar with the Eagles since the 70’s. Shares lead with other guitarists thru the years. Even his guitar sound is unique. He did several solo albums & was a bona fide rock star on his own before joining the Eagles.

Yes, I still remember the day in the late 70's when I walked in a record store with a buddy and we saw an LP or poster that said "Joe Walsh of the Eagles" We both did a double-take - - - Joe Walsh OF THE EAGLES? We knew Joe Walsh from James Gang and his solo LPs,... and we knew the prior members of the Eagles - Joe Walsh wasn't one of 'em. But OK... Joe Walsh of the Eagles.. huh... and so it was... and a good time was had by all.

I saw him play this live with "Ringo's All Star Band" featuring Ringo Starr (The Beatles), Burton Cummings (The Guess Who), Dave Edmunds (Dave Edmunds), Glenn Frey, Don Felder, Joe Walsh (The Eagles), and Ringo's son on drums. This group played "Rocky Mountain Way", "I hear you Knockin", These Eyes", "Yellow Submarine", "Drive My Car"....there were more but those are the songs I remember. Ringo's All Star band was the second best concert I ever went to.......the best being Chuck Berry. I have seen more concerts than you could even begin to imagine. I also caught (and kept) Jim Dandy's washboard after Black Oak Arkansas played "When Electricity Came to Arkansas". I had to mention that as my third favorite moment. My cousin and Leon Russell. WOW.! What a story this is. My cousin makes false teeth for a living. He used to cast live spiders using the same technical methods and create these really cool gold spiders of great detail. He begged a roadie to give one to Leon before the concert. When Leon came out, there it was, a gold spider, stuck to his lapel, shining in the light. Leon said "I want to thank my friend out there for this really cool spider". That was my fourth favorite concert.

Me and my buddies once packed up a car in like 2014 to go from Bloomington Indiana to Louisville Kentucky which is a decent drive for us small town folk. First stop was the damn Guitar Center where I picked up my first talkbox because of this legend. Amazed all my friends when I performed the solo for the first time with the talkbox hahahaha. Joe said in one of his songs "If you just act like you know what you're doin, everybody thinks that you do." and that stuck with me forever and rang true that day. Thanks Joe!
