This is the era of rockabilly 50's-60's. Elvis Presley's early music done on Sun Records is done in this style. Eddie had a lot of great hits such as "Summertime Blues", "Twenty Flight Rock", "C'mon Everybody", "Somethin' Else", "Three Steps To Heaven", "Teenage Heaven", "Nervous Breakdown", "Cut Across Shorty" & "Sittin' In The Balcony". Another great artist who was a friend of Eddie Cochran was Gene Vincent who had a big hit with "Be-Bop-a-Lula". Sadly Eddie died at only 21 years of age from a car accident but he left us a great legacy of music.

Cochran’s guitar was held by police after the accident. One of the police at the scene was Davy Dee who started to learn guitar on Eddie’s Gretsch before it was released after the inquest and sent to Cochran’s mother. Davy Dee went on to form Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich. Earlier on the tour, a young Marc Feld helped Cochran carry that guitar out to his car. Mark Feld became Marc Bolan and formed T.Rex. He also died in a car crash far too young. It’s reckoned that that tour is what led to the disproportionate amount of British guitarists who became stars in the mid/late 60s. Cochran’s technique and especially his use of an unwound 3rd string was adopted by the likes of Clapton, Beck, Page etc.

Secret Agent man sometimes leads to the Mondegreen (lyrics misunderstanding) due to singers voice sounding like "Secret Asian Man." Just saying. Like CCR's Bad Moon Rising where the lyric "There's a bad moon on the rise" has been thought to be "there's a bathroom on the right" or "there's a baboon on the right." Amusing how we get the lyrics incorrect from time to time. The film Bull Durham when Nuke Larouche sings "young girls get wooly" and Crash Davis says, "It's young girls get weary, not wooly! No one gets wooly. Gesh I hate it when people get the words wrong."

"Summertime Blues" 1958. Eddie Cochran "C’mon Everybody" is also a bop. Sadly, Cochran died when he was 22. So most of the rabbit whole with his music comes from covers of "Summertime Blues" performed by other artists: Blue Cheer, The Who, Alan Jackson, and Brian Setzer among others.

When Eddie died I was finishing up 8th Grade. This song was everywhere on the radios. It was so definitive of the time. (Only 3 to 5 channels on the TV. FM radio was yet to become a thing. Telephones were still plugged into the wall and a house usually only had one, One car family's were the norm and if you wanted to use the car you better have the money to fill the gas tank afterwards. In High School I was given the ultimatum, turn out for varsity sports or get a job. You weren't going to sit around and goof off after school) The times were changing. The kids born during or just after WW II were beginning to come into their own, (I was born just at the end of WW II in 1945), and beginning to have some influence on some parts of society. The song sounds as fresh today as it did to that 8th grader in 1960.

This 16 year-old kid feels so wronged that he threatens to go to the top (The UN was more respected back then) to get what he sees as this "unjust" removal of car privileges------ the kill shot to any young man who wanted to take his date to say, a drive-in movie on a Saturday Night Triple Feature. Unfortunately, in his time, he was under-appreciated in the United States. This song was a big hit, reaching #8 on the charts, so most people knew who he was from this song, but he generally didn't get much airplay here and people weren't buying many of his records. He only had two other records that made it into the top 40, Sitting in the Balcony in 1956 hit #18 and C'mon Everybody hit #35 in 1958. But meanwhile, he was continuously having hit records in England, where he had 10 top 40 hits, two of which were C'mon Everybody, that reached #6 and Three Steps to Heaven which was his only #1 hit (in the U.S. it only reached #108). Gene Vincent, who was with him and injured in the taxicab crash that took Eddie's life, had a similar experience. Be-Bop-a-Lula was a hit in both countries, but he only had two more songs that reached the top 40 in America. In England he had 8 top 40 songs.

Eddie was also a studio session musician, who contributed to numerous other recordings. His girlfriend, Sharon Sheeley wrote a huge hit for Ricky Nelson: "Poor Little Fool" in 1958

Thank you so much for doing this. I love Eddie Cochran. This song got me through the Summer of 1995 when I got my first job washing down lorry’s back in Swadlincote England. I’ve always loved Rock N Roll since I discovered Buddy Holly. And then I got into Buddy’s buddy Eddie. They both have influenced me throughout my carrier as a musician. Eddie was in the 50’s what Nirvana was in the 90’s

This song was never recorded in stereo as we're hearing it here. Stereo was only beginning around this time and not many records were produced in stereo yet. This is a recent digital enhancement of the original for stereo effect, but they did a good job. They kept the original intact while adding just a little stereo effect to it.

There are many covers of this one but Eddie did the original. The Who did a somewhat psychedelic version in 1970. In 2004, Rush recorded "Feedback", an EP of covers, paying tribute to artists who inspired them in their teens. The EP includes their take on The Who's cover of "Summertime Blues".

I think the biggest thing to take away is that Rock n Roll has its roots in Blues or Rhythm and Blues so some Rock n Roll, especially from the earlier years can sound very southern, or folksy even. You should really watch a history of rock n roll and you can see the progression and things will make so much sense. I love seeing how things connect, what has influenced many artists we love and how they have branched out since the early days of RnR.

Folk music you mostly sit and listen to. You might clap to Folk and sway to that genre of music, but never saw anyone get up and danced to it. Rockabilly/50s RnR music (like this) you jumped up, hit the floor and and dance your heart out.

Eddie had been singing professionally since the age of 15. So even at 21 he was a veteran performer. He wrote his own songs played guitar and like Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry were the archetypes of what was to come. You might want to listen to some Chuck Berry...the original Guitar Hero.

When the biopic film La Bamba (about the life of Ritchie Valens) came out, the movie sound track had quite a few songs that appeared in the film. This is one of the of those songs. It was cover by the same artist who played by Eddie Cochran in the movie. None other than Brian Setzer (of The Stray Cats). He does a very faithful rendition of the song though with a bit more rawer sound in it. You should check out the cover version he did. Fun Fact: Hard rock band Blue Cheer did a heavy metal cover of this song as well. The Who also performed it live for many years and it appeared on their Live At Leeds album.

Rockabilly is the best genre fit. A little early rock mix with country, R&B and gospel roots. A musical melting pot. The early boomers - war babies and those of the 50s - were actually the first generation that had the opportunity to have an extensive childhood. They were the first teenagers. Rock and roll was full of their angst. Now kids were expected to go to school til 12th grade. They went to movies and other types of entertainments. But you had part time jobs for pocket money. At 14, my paternal grandmother was working 12 hour shifts in a textile mill. At 14, my maternal grandmother was married and share cropping as well as keeping house. At 14, I was just flipping burgers after school. Post World War II saw some significant social change.

As others have said, this is pure rockabilly through and through, but it also has a little bit of a surf sound to it, too. One of my favorites from the 50s. In my opinion his sound is probably closer to Buddy Holly than early Elvis, but they were all so similar in sound in that early era.

The thing to remember about a lot of these early white R'n'R singers is that they grew up listening to Country and Folk stuff. Eddie (who was from Oklahoma) was a Country singer before he did Rock'n' Roll. Listen to Hank Williams or Jimmie Rodgers to hear his influences.

They had the best harmonies ever . They influenced just about everyone. Including the Beatles. The also did folk and rock . You won’t regret it.
