I was always touched by the line "My father ... he liked me." It says so much by underplaying it in a way. Her father, no doubt, loved her very much, but to say "he liked me" says something else, that he enjoyed her company, appreciated her personality, thought she was cool. Many parents can love their kids without feeling any of those things.

Dolores wrote this song on their first US tour. She was missing home very badly. While she was extroverted after a while, she was extremely shy initially. In the pubs of Ireland they couldn't get her to face the crowd. That voice carried her around the world. Now she rests eternally beside her father, back in the place she was missing so much when she wrote this.
@enajd9552
@enajd9552 Жыл бұрын
That’s right about her being so shy. Saw then in the White horse in Dublin before they were signed to a label. A small gig in an upstairs room with only about 30 people - could have been less even. She was so shy & lacking in confidence but her voice carried through the usual pub clamour & chatter, sweet, soulful & unpretentious. The fact that she always sang in her own Limerick accent showed a latent confidence in her own unique talent - unlike so many others who Americanised their accents to sell internationally. Rest in peace Lolo

This is, and has always been my favorite Cranberries song. With Linger being a close 2nd. The story behind this song is that Delores was feeling homesick and realizing how tough touring America can be. Living in hotels, away from your family, the people you’ve known and the sacrifices you’ve had to make for the price of fame and playing music. Rest in Peace, Delores O’Riordan.

This song hit the charts in 1994. It shows Dolores craving the simple life as a child after achieving success.Her parents weren't happy with her choice to pursue a career as a rock star. Unbelievable vocals with harmonies that are so very entertaining especially with the Irish accents that draw your full attention. Absolutely beautiful. Loved your reaction. I had the biggest crush on the singer when I was in high school. I was a metal head and couldn't admit to my friends that I liked the Cranberries, although looking back, I suspect they secretly liked them too. She was a beautiful lady with an astounding voice that still gives me goosebumps to this day. R.I.P. Dolores O'Riordan.

So glad you did another Cranberries song. Not a week goes by when I don't miss Dolores. If I may, I'd like to take this opportunity to recommend another amazing female voice from the 90s, Harriet Wheeler, the lead singer of The Sundays. Though not Irish, her voice is as pure as they come. "Summertime", "Here's Where the Story Ends", and "Goodbye" are among their very best. I hope they will grace a future Female Friday.

This song always meant a lot to me, too. The Cranberries came along when our kids were teens, but they actually were not too embarrassed to have us around. We saw them with our kids and a few of their friends at an outdoor venue in a light drizzling rain. Ode to My Family feels like my family growing up, but I hope like our family that was growing up then, too. One thing about seeing them live - Dolores was tiny. It was astounding to hear this big voice come out of this little woman. She blows me away, plus what a tight band the Cranberries were.

Guys, I love that yall have taken what you have taken from the lyrics and I almost didnt post this comment because I dont want to contradict you or shade anyone else’s experience with this song, but I obviously am posting this. I have a different experience with this song. I am recovering from a serious drug addiction that cost me my marriage and career. I shudder and find it almost impossible to keep my heart from literally breaking when I think of how this could be and might affect my 2 kids in the future(they are 7 and 11 years old). I am 9 months clean after moving back home to Alabama from Utah and living with my mom and stepdad and denying myself freedom, a vehicle, social interaction, and the escape and comfort I sought through drugs, among other things, that you might assume come along with this. I say all of this, getting back to the song, to give context for how this song affects me now. It was different when I was in middle school or something like that when it came out. The lyrics meant NOTHING to me then, but I liked the sound. Since coming here I re-visited it for that reason and WOW, I shed some tears my friends. I still get chills and have this experience now. About the message, I am sure the phrasing she uses is not lost on many people, but the word choice seems deliberate to me. Her father “liked” her? Her mother “holds” her when she “was” out there? Instead of “held”? This could be Irish regional custom, but it brings to mind for me this feeling of how my parents might feel about me. They have always shown love and support. But are they ashamed of me? Do they pity me? Am I one of “those” people they used to judge(not sure if they ever did judge people)? Now, the “out there” part is obviously, to ME, when I was in Utah, including the time I was using drugs. The second verse kills me because I had this exact experience. “Understand what I’ve become, it wasnt my design. And people everywhere think something better than I am”. Yeah, it is almost self explanatory, except you would have to know the expectation there was for me. I graduated 4th in my class, got a college degree, was active in my church and served literally thousands of hours of community service(some in Mexico). To be here living with my mother(temporarily, I must say) is simultaneously a blessing that alot of addicts do not have as an option AND a faceplant in a mud puddle after my pants fell down when I forgot to wear underwear. That is the most appropriate way I can think to explain it. The use of the word “design” really intrigues me. Its like this beautiful Irish woman was in my life experience or something. Were I as eloquent, I would have used that word to describe my experience. There was a plan. God HAD a “design” for me. Now, people everywhere do think something better than I am, and in 2 ways. First of all, my hope for what I achieve in life has been cut down pretty low. I just dont see things with the positivity and hope as before. I didnt deal with life like the successful people did. I missed it. But also, for some reason, people looked up to me, showed admiration, complimented, sought my attention and approval, and expected great things of me. But now I know that their expectations and opinions were alot more than I can achieve or actually live. Even now, I hear the encouragement and support, and while I do appreciate it, I don’t feel like I deserve or am worthy of it. Its just not me. The worst and best part is that I have my kids and access to them. Dont misunderstand please, when I say worst. It is because I feel I robbed them of a childhood with their mother and father in a traditional nuclear family home. I can see it in their eyes that they are sad. It affects them. And I cant live with myself. But it is the best because without them, I would have given up. I hate to say it, but I would be dead. I am not saying I would have made a big plan and killed myself. But, I would have done enough drugs and kept pushing the envelope to be able to escape this world. My kids gave me the will to accept the invitation to come here and try to get clean and start over. It is embarrassing and frustrating to do this. It is embarrassing to tell girls that try to get me to spend time with them, that I dont have a car here. I am a grown man and in this 9 months I have had to tell at least 7 girls that exact same thing. Its weird because I spend most of the time in this house out in the country, and it is hard to even get to a gas station or store of any kind. I have to walk a mile and a half to get to any business. From there it is even further to the next one. I appreciate them and everyone else for acting as if it is not uncommon that I dont have my own vehicle at this age. They, just like everyone else, just goes follows it up by offering to come to me. People everywhere think something better than I am. My step dad says I am still beating myself up and says I have done it enough already, but I am not ready to stop. I messed up alot for me, my EX-wife(who I am on good terms with and with whom I will always be family), my kids, my parents, my 2 brothers, etc etc. It was not just me. I missed my parents when I was out there in Utah. I miss my family in Utah now that I am here in Alabama. Do they know? Do I tell them enough? Finally, does it even matter? I know people care. But, everyone will eventually be able to move on and make it without me. Anyway, sorry for the long message yall. Love the channel. You seem like good people and I appreciate the warmth and love yall express. I hope your experience with this and other music will continue to be that positive slant yall are always able to find. I wish I was like that.

A very emotional song for me,especially as Delores is no longer with us,a beautifully crafter & innocent song that makes us think of our carefree childhood.😢

Delores had a brilliant voice, she sang with Pavarotti! You can find it onKZbin, also someone mentioned the Corrs, think you would like them, they dominated the charts in 90s in Ireland England, think USA also, love you guys 😘
