Lyrics: "Take The Long Way Home" So you think you're a Romeo playing a part in a picture-show Take the long way home Take the long way home Cos you're the joke of the neighborhood Why should you care if you're feeling good Take the long way home Take the long way home But there are times that you feel you're part of the scenery all the greenery is comin' down, boy And then your wife seems to think you're part of the furniture oh, it's peculiar, she used to be so nice. When lonely days turn to lonely nights you take a trip to the city lights And take the long way home Take the long way home You never see what you want to see Forever playing to the gallery You take the long way home Take the long way home And when you're up on the stage, it's so unbelievable, unforgettable, how they adore you, But then your wife seems to think you're losing your sanity, oh, calamity, is there no way out? Does it feel that you life's become a catastrophe? Oh, it has to be for you to grow, boy. When you look through the years and see what you could have been oh, what might have been, if you'd had more time. So, when the day comes to settle down, Who's to blame if you're not around? You took the long way home You took the long way home...........

Just a friendly 'warning' (although that sounds too serious, LOL), I've seen people entirely misread the meaning of the song, thinking it's being critical of 'wasting time' and wandering around aimlessly. I've seen Roger H say his point was along the lines of "we get where we get one way or another, and it may not be as we expected or even where we expected, but don't weigh yourself down with expectations to the point you forget to enjoy what you did, let alone flogging yourself over not 'being perfect' ". So he's NOT being critical of not doing things the 'right' way, or as soon as may have been technically possible, because sometimes we simply get there going "the long way home". Cheers

My favorite Supertramp memory is from a concert that they didn’t even play in. It was the Texxas Jam in the summer of ‘79 in Dallas and man was it hot. We were on the field (as we were for all Texxas Jams!) and really couldn’t move much because it was wall to wall people. Van Halen had just finished their set and wore everyone out. The break between sets was taking forever because Boston wanted the sun to go down before playing and we were just trying to survive the heat. Then a dude breaks out his harmonica and does the Long Way Home intro. Everyone started singing and partying and it just got us all revved up for the next band. Love me some Supertramp!

Emily .... You and I have a connection. My husband and I have been together for 41 years. Supertramp reminds me of our first date. We watched a meteor shower in the night sky with Supertramp playing on our cassette player. Lots of good memories.

So when I was a kid in middle school, my school was 8 to 10 blocks away and us kids walked or rode our bikes to school. And I had a regular why home and a long way home. I know when I had a bad day or had things on my mind I took the long way home. Just so I would not run into friends and people that I knew; so I could just think by my self on the way back home. That's why I loved this song when it was released way back then.. lot of good memories.

I have loved Supertramp from the beginning. For some reason "Give A Little Bit" has always held a special place in my heart. Another great video you two!

This song is a representation of life. Getting stuck in a rut and going through the motions. The song urges you not to cut corner but to "Take the Long Way Home" and live life to the fullest.

Rudy and School are two of my favorites - but everything on Crime of the Century is brilliant - it's a masterpiece.

"School" and "Bloody Well Right" by Supertramp are excellent songs as well. Supertramp is a very cerebral group, much like Pink Floyd.

Another one of those monster albums that most people who grew up when I did had. What a great album."Give A Little Bit" and "The Logical Song" were my faves.

And it must crazy to imagine for you guys that this sort of music was considered mainstream and even appeared in the charts back in the golden musical days of the 70s! 🎼🌈❤️

Love this song! Every time it comes on i have to turn it up and sing along - especially in the car! My sister was a fan so I remember being a little girl and going into her room and listening to this album when i was in elementary school!

Supertramp is one of those hidden gem bands that people know a few songs, but don't know the group. I feel like most of the younger generation only knows them if their parents were fans growing up. They didn't quite hit that iconic status that their contemporaries did and faded from the public consciousness more than others. They are one of the most unique sounds of that era IMO and deserve more love than they get today.

I'm hoping that reactions like these are the modern day radio, and react-ers are like DJs: helping those interested in great 70s music find the good stuff. Reactions seem pretty popular, so I'm thinking there's hope.

Supertramp always had that Beatles vibe to their songs. This is just another example of that. Roger Hodgson wrote Give a Little Bit after listening to All You Need is Love. Meaningful lyrics coupled with a great musical background. That was the Beatles recipe.

I ENVY YOU!!! You guys are about to go down the Supertramp “rabbit hole,” and I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t want to come out! If you survive, and you’re brave enough to flirt with another “rabbit hole,” try some STEELY DAN! I guarantee, these 2 bands will be on your Top 10 list…forever.

They could spend a solid six months - doing nothing but - Steely Dan.

Ah, Steely Dan - they were so great! And a lot of their songs on the album AJA became hits - Deacon Blues, Black Cow, When Josie comes home, Peg, and Aja (my personal favorite). Really good stuff. Thanks

My favourite group of all time. They have a unique sound. The music is often upbeat although the lyrics are often sad or dark. Any song from any of their five consecutive albums beginning with the all-time classic Crime of the Century followed by Crisis? What Crisis? (so underrated), Even In the Quietest Moments (sublime), Breakfast In America (most successful commercial LP), and Famous Last Words (underrated). These guys wrote about loneliness, social commentary, love, love lost, spirituality and more. Superb lyricists and musicians with great production. Very few pop/rock groups can meld organ and electric piano with regular doses of Harmonica (School is the classic example), saxophone and clarinet and make it sound great.

The entire album is terrific. Really their masterpiece.

Disagree. Their masterpiece is Crime of the Century. This album is good, but they wanted to be more commercial and more airplay, so they produced this album.

Early on, if you listen, he says his wife treats him like a piece of furniture. Not to spoil it but, there's one more line about what's going on, in his or their life and times. He is taking the long way home because he does not wish to be at home...

This is why we KNEW you'd love them. Two keyboardists, plus lots of harmonica, sax, clarinet. Both your favorites. The entire album of Crime of the Century is AMAZING I suggest you react in the order the album is arranged: School, Bloody Well Right (look for a live version of it), Hide in Your Shell, on and on. Some of the songs may be found under Roger Hodgson's individual channel.
