Metallica were road warriors in the 80's and this song captured their life on the road perfectly... James Hetfield recalled back in 1983 when the band launched their career, "...Radio wouldn't help us... MTV was a 'no-no'... No one would help us. So we played live... we played until we dropped..." Regardless of the quality of their later records... Metallica should always be respected for building a solid fanbase in the millions without any commercial airplay or media fanfare.

80's? Shit....that '91-'94 run alone was so ridiculously long! I wonder for a band of their size and popularity if that wasn't the longest goddamn tour? I mean the backend leg was named "Nowhere Left to Roam Tour" ffs! haha! I saw them in several small ass cities on that run.

@@sumonjamal1653 I grew up in the 80's and Metallica was already huge by the time the "Black" album came out. How many bands had to build a fan base without radio or MTV? Just about every band that didn't have celebrity parents or connections. Do you look at the 70's and wonder how any of those bands made it without MTV? No, they were good and put in the work just like Metallica.

This album came out in 1991, a time when they have been together as a band for little over 10 years, released 4 previous albums that re-shaped the world of heavy metal, lost bassist wonder Cliff Burton on an accident while touring in Europe, and having 3 of the 4 members getting divorces during the recording of this album. This song speaks about all they had been through until that point, and how they will forever “roam” (travel the world playing their music) because that is how life is for Metallica, and that is how they have become who they are.

When I was 16 back in the early 90s Metallica was touring with GNR and they were coming to Tulsa. I worked at Bell’s Amusement and they were playing there. I’m a preacher’s kid and my folks wouldn’t let me go to see them. So I told them I was working when I wasn’t. So two hours before the show was supposed to start Axl decided he didn’t feel like playing that night and the show was cancelled. Metallica didn’t come back to Oklahoma until 2018 and I was finally able to mark it off my concert bucket list.
