As tired as I am of this song, this live version is my absolute favorite. I love the crowd, I love the energy, I love how they sounded. This whole concert (Black Crows, Pantera, Metallica and AC/DC) was history in the making. Monsters of Moscow will never be repeated.

I can't even imagine what it would be like to be part of a crowd that big. How did any the people near the front even survive?? I suppose that's the wrong question since people died and so many were injured. Did the band ever comment on how they felt about that particular concert's consequences and the lack of crowd control? I remember in the '90s there was an outcry against mosh pits. A lot of women were grateful for large men who helped them out, but more often had horrifying stories.

@@jackiegoodspeed1849 Not so much at rock and metal concerts. I've been to plenty (including Metallica 5 times), and none of the fans fight. The only thing that makes me sad about this concert is how the Russian soldiers treated the crowd because they didn't understand what they were doing in the mosh pits. Tragic that almost 60 people died and countless others were beaten with batons at their hands.

When James Hetfield (lead singer),was asked how it felt to perform in front of that sea of humanity he replied it was like stepping out of a swimming pool straight into a wall of electricity. This performance was at the Moscow Music Peace Festival. Metallica and numerous other bands were the 1st to ever play their rock and metal in concert in Russia.

This was one of (if not the first time - 1991) they (Americans) were allowed to play in Russia.. This is Monsters of Rock Festival in Moscow. These 1.6 million fans are from all over in the first free open air concert.

This was the second. The first was the Moscow Music Peace Festival where Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne, Scorpions, Cinderella, Skid Row and Gorky Park played to 200,000 people. But this one had a much bigger crowd, estmates ran between 600,000 to 1,000,000!

The first time Americans and hard rock acts from other countries played in Russia was the Moscow Music Peace Festival. That was 1989 and the song Wind of Change by The Scorpions was written about this festival. A lot of people assume Wind of Change was written about the fall of the Berlin wall but it was about the fall of the USSR.

Russian authorities would have normally locked this crowd up for what they were wearing (American jeans and concert tee shirts) and listening to (American music.)

I'm with you. We got the tail end of the psychedelic 60's, thats when Rock started to become more experimental and interesting. ☮️ Then came the iconic 70's, the very best decade for rock imo. 🎸🎹 In the carefree 80's we got power metal, NuWave, NWOBHM, and hair bands. 🤘 When the glitter and spandex got out hand, 90's grunge brought it back to reality. 🎸 From there it's been downward spiral of disposable auto tune pop garbage. 🤮 I'm sure many will disagree, but that's how I see it.

What makes this specific concert truly special and in fact, historic, is that this was performed as the Soviet Union was collapsing. They were some of the first American Artists to perform in the Soviet Union, which is why there was 1.5 million people in attendance. This was their first taste of freedom and expression.

@@ChanelStuff No, it was the Chordettes. There are a couple of videos on You Tube claiming to be the Andrews Sisters but they are actually the Chordettes singing. There is one legit video of them singing a live cover of it at a tribute show, but they are much older then, maybe in their late 50's or early 60's. They never released a recording of it, though it wouldn't surprise me if someone found a video of them covering it when they worked on the Lawrence Welk show in the same era. It was a very popular song and they did cover lots of popular songs that they never released as a recording on that show.

@@ChanelStuff You know, that is a good assumption! I think because of the harmonies and all female group it is stylistically in their wheelhouse? The Andrews started singing in the late 30's and last charted in 1950--I had to look that up--you had me guessing my memory! Mr Sandman was written in 1954 and the Chordettes took it to #1. There is an Andrews Sisters tribute group on KZbin singing this song but I didn't watch it to see if they misattribute it or just lumped it in because it fits the genre.

This album got me in trouble. Innocent 23 year old me didn’t know what s&m was. I worked in a cd store. My customer was looking for Metallica. I was like oh yeah the s&m one. He was like what? I said yeah Symphony and Metallica. My supervisor told him, “she really doesn’t know.” It was years before I understood what had happened.

This song was the entrance music for the greatest closer of all time New York Yankees legend Mariano Rivera. When Enter Sandman hit in Yankee Stadium it meant game over for the opposing team. Fun fact, during Mariano's final all-star game appearance Metallica played Sandman live as he jogged out from the bullpen to the pitchers mound. No song is more synonymous with a sports figure than Enter Sandman with Mariano Rivera

I have always liked the crowd shots of this concert. The soldiers you see were supposed to be crowd control but if you watch as the song goes on they get more into it until they are dancing with out their shirts on. I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned this but Metallica holds a Guinness World Record at least up to 2017 cuz they are the only band to do a live concert on all seven of the continents.

I was 17 when this album dropped... it was a hell of a time to be a live.... I will say this and others alive at the time might remember... This was the black album... which now is considered one of the best rock albums ever made but when it came out.... die hard fans scream they sold out to MTV..... At the same time... they grew mega HUGE... this was the album that kicked in the doors to main stream... this took them from 2000 a people shows to 20000 over night. They were huge before but it was only hard core metal fans... after... who isn't an fan... not many... this was also a hell of a time to be alive for the fall of USSR... feel reel odd saying that now... since it looks like they want to reform... be glad so far we don't have to live like that anymore... hell we had nuke drills in schools till 91... just like fire/earthquake but for nuke war... I am not that old... born in 74... but sadly people didn't read enough history books and here we are again... In 91 the youth civilians saved the democrat gov from a coup... as a reward they got this concert... first concert with western acts... they wanted these guys and acdc, pantera, etc.. I hope the youth form a coup and get rid of putin... you don't want a cold war... no leader is worth that...

B.T.W: This was the album where James, really, first, worked-on his singing (or, rather: worked on his singing, FOR!). He became a better vocalist, here (and after. ...sang more melody (& delivered better Prior, yes:he DID, but he, really, started-out and often gravitated towards: "growling/screaming" and so forth (moreso than "typical rock 'n' roll vocals."); earlier on.). he did, always have a bit of a melodic bent to his vocalizing, as: the band (and particularly he) were influenced by the NWoBHM (which was, very-much, melodically-based (not "hardcore-punk"-style.). This is one of the reasons I, think, that I liked what they were doing, when I first heard it. ..."Extreme ...but not TOO extreme" (for me, personally). ...just saying....

Wel. It was a sellout.... not to MTV but for money. This album brought in millions of non metal fans to them, but alienated the fans that got them to that point... I don't think anyone would say it's a bad album. It just was not a metallica album at that time. Simplified riffs, overall slower tempo songs. It's a far cry from disposable heroes, ride the lightning and the 4 horsemen...... mind you, their subsequent albums, load, reload, garage days, etc, made the black album seem like a much better album..... this is strictly my own opinion. It happens to be shared by a lot of other people..... I could say I stopped listening to metallica after this album, but it was actually load where I washed my hands of them.

@@mikemclaughlin3306 Their latest album, Hardwired to Self-Destruct, from about four or five years ago (pandemic makes it hard to tell time for me) was really good stuff. At least half of it is on par with the heavier music from the Black Album. And there were some hints of what they were doing before their money making sell-out. Yes, I agree it was a sell-out, but I liked what they were doing both before the sell-out and after, so... there was just more for me to enjoy. I'm not gonna turn away good music just because it's something different than what they did before. Good is good. Like yourself, I also had given them a miss for a while, but for me, I stayed on through Re-load and then quit. Re-Load was just part two of Load, and it was pretty decent, but bogged down by filler songs. Should have made one great album out of the two - Load and Re-Load trimmed down into one. Would have had a much bigger reaction almost like the Black Album was received. For me, after Re-Load, the music didn't seem worth the time until Hardwired came out, and they seemed to have their mojo again finally.

I've seen them 5 times starting in 1988 and nost recently in 2017. They've been awesome everytime, but the best show for me was in 1992 in Oakland, CA on their tour with Guns n Roses. It was after James's pyro accident up in Toronto and James hadn't been playing guitar. At our show, he did the whole concert with no guitar, but for the Enter Sandman encore, he strapped it on and we all went CRAZY!!! Best concert I've been to.

@@ramonllica We were blown away by Metallica! After their set, it took nearly 2 hours for GnR to take the stage. Fans in the infield got restless and started tearing up the turf and destroyed the pitcher's mound! I remember seeing very large pieces of grass being tossed in the air. It was crazy. Then, they finally came out and (in my opinion) sucked!

Seeing Amber rock out to this is awesome! Their live footage is awesome even if the sound quality isn’t always good. Hit some more studio versions. “Master of Puppets” is a standard for reactors and is a powerful song. The first album “Kill ‘em All” is HARD! “Anesthesia: Pulling Teeth” and “Whiplash” should be played together and would be an awesome next choice as well.

I feel like you guys missed the lyrics in the “slowed down” part. It’s not just slowed down-it’s ominous. This performance was historical. There was over a quarter of a million Russians at the concert. This was a live performance in Moscow. So many people knew this would be a one time performance, once in a lifetime chance to see Metallica. And they all came from all over Russia. There were fences in the middle of the crowd. But so many people showed up they knocked them down. The entire stage was surrounded, the crowd in front was just a portion of the people. It was literally an ocean of people rocking out to Metallica. There has never been a turn out like this before or since, this was the biggest performance ever. Now you should listen to Harvester of Sorrow. It's begining starts with a very familiar chant of, 'All we owe, We owe her' , from the 1950s movie Wizard of Oz. It the chant that the wicked witch of the East's soldiers chant as they are going into the castle.

I saw them live when this great album came out in the early 90's, and you are correct about the drums hitting you in the chest. I was in the front row, and I felt every bass kick as if someone was standing there patting me on the chest. Great concert. No opening act. Just about 3 hours of Metallica. And for this song (the one they opened the show I attended with), wait until you hear the album version. Then you'll really appreciate it a lot more than this live version. Actually being able to hear everything clearly. Studio versions should be first - then a great live version after you already know the song. It's just science.

Their music is very orchestrated, they convey emotional value very accurately with their instrumental, and nearly all of their songs lyrics posses deep context telling a story...Personally I think all their songs are quite amazing, and though many aren't too keen on it, they are quite versatile. Metallica has been through a lot together as a band, and has been pounding out amazing music since the 1980's and are still very prominent today. They have one of the largest fan bases. It's hard to say which song to recommend, but there is no wrong choice...My personal Favorite is "Fade to Black"

It is Virginia Tech that uses this as their pre-game walkout song and I highly recommend looking up a video and checking it out if you haven't seen it. It isn't 1.6 million Russians but 50k students and fans jumping up and down and singing is really fun. It shows up on seismographs since they are sensitive machines and there's not really a whole lot that goes on in rural Virginia.

Being a songwriter, musician and vocalist myself and have played in several metal and rock bands over the years, this is one of my favorite bands. When you said about how good of musicians they are and how good the band is, you're right about that. And with that being said, here's a story. Their first bass player (Cliff Burton) died from when their tour bus had crashed and fliped over several times. So later on they dediced to auditioned for a new bass player. The guy who they picked is the guy here in this video who's name is Jason Newsted. However, one of the people who audtioned for the band was the bass player Les Claypool for the band Primus. And according to the two founding members of Metallica (drummer Lars Ulrich and lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield) in an inverview that I watched. They said that they didn't take him because they thought that he was to good of a bass player for their band, so they passed on him. Can you get that! They said that he was to good of a bass player to have him in their band. Now I've heard Les and he is very good, but how good must you be for Metallica not to hire you for their band from an audition. That's crazy!

I think that's not what they meant. I think what they really meant is that if they hire a top class musician with 10 years classical study on his back, it will be very hard for them to work with him, because they need a certain sound for the band. And if bass player, for example, will be "too good" - he will try to imply his knowledge in their songs, which will change the sound of the band completely. Or just because it would be hard for Lars to keep up with him...

They both said "He was too good". So you can read into it differently or think it meant somehting else but I'm just saying what I heard them say. Metallica is my all time favorite band. They got me through some tough times. It sounds cliche, but it doesn't make it less true. HIGHLY recommend "Orion" from Master of Puppets, great instrumental. And for flat out speed, try "Whiplash" from Kill em All. "Sad but True" from The Black Album is super heavy, or "The Thing That Should Not Be" from Puppets as well...im so glad you guys are loving this. Sidenote, "The Good the Bad and the Ugly" is played before every show they do. The drummer is Lars Ulrich, and believe it or not he's the least talented member of the band lol.

Others don't like them because of the drama between them and, former member, Dave Mustaine (Megadeth lead singer). They have a slew of good songs. This live version was performed in Russia. I've been to 10 Metallica concerts in my days (and will be adding another if they ever announce any dates for LA in the future) and everytime they put on a masterful performance.
