Andrew Hammond. A career minor league goaltender who one season put up a 20-1 record dragging the Senators into the playoffs. Then kinda disappeared into obscurity.

He actually played playoff games for the avalanche a few years later and did pretty well lol. He then bounced around the league, playing games for Minnesota’s affiliate in Iowa, he played a couple games for the habs last season (those ones were my favourite), and he finished his career with New Jersey this past season after announcing his retirement. His career stats: 67 GP 31-20-7 .917 SV% Playoffs 5 GP 1-4-0

Goalkeeper Mike McKenna - He represented an incredible number of 22 PRO Teams in his hockey PRO career. Drafted 172nd overall by Nashville Predators in 2002, and had a career from 2005 til 2019! Following his retirement, he was hired as a TV analyst for the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

Pierre Turgeon right up there with Alexander Mogilny when it comes to glaring H.O.F omissions.. It makes zero sense aside from personal pettiness from members of the voting committee. I was done with the H.O.F after they callously waited until Pat Burns passed away before inducting him. They had several opportunities to do so while he was still alive. Hopefully Pierre & Alex get their moment some day soon.

I grew up on hockey, but have recently come to realize what utter dogshit the culture of the sport is. "Oh you didn't participate in a brawl as a teenager? BANNED FORVER YOU FUCKING COWARD!" The game is run by a bunch of knuckle-dragging dumbfucks who think wearing a suit is what makes you professional and covers all the terrible things you do and think.

Turgeon certainly should've been on Canada's 96 World Cup Team and probably the 98 Olympic team but around that time the architects of Team Canada were obsessed with gritty players and left off quite a few highly skilled guys, Turgeon being one.

As a 34yr old NYR fan who remembers the Blackburn thing, he had SO much potential its so sad his career was derailed so early due to injury - random anectodte - i went to NYR vs PHI in philly with my fam (step dad/step bro were philly fans but my bro and i were die hard NYR fans so we took tonnns of abuse wearing our broadway blue in a see of orage/black, even getting food thrown at me (i was 13btw) - well we decided to walk down to the visiting bench during warm ups as they came out and the coach at the time was Tom Renney and the blackburn injury had just happened and being a goalie myself i actually asked him as he came through the tunnel if Blackburn would return anytime soon and he just looked at me and shook his head knowingly...two days later the news was official.

Dude, Theoren Fleury got arteries in his left arm severed and missed a year when he was like nine or ten. His parents were alcoholics/addicted to prescription drugs. He was sexually abused when he was a teenager. He was never supposed to make it besides all of that heaped on him and was "too small" for the NHL to begin with. Yet, he's in the top seventy all-time in points and may be pound for pound and inch for inch one of the best players all-time. His NHL record of three short handed goals and his plus nine game never get talked about either. The last four years of his career or so were about as bizarre as it gets too.

Turgeon never played for tem Canada again because it was so stacked at the center position. Gretzky, Lemeiux, Sakic, Neiwendyke, Lindros, Messier, Francis, Linden, and Hawerchuck were the choices for team Canada at center. Who do you bump to put Turgeon in? He also had a reputation of being frail. He didn't get to play for them because of all the Hall of Famers who were available and much better. It wasn't because team Canada hated him. Turgeon was good but not great.

The opposite of Dan Blackburn was Hall-of-Fame goalie Bill Durnan, who played with two gloves, no blocker. Go look at some old pictures. I understand he was ambidextrous and could catch with either hand and shoot both right & left. It must have helped, because he won six Vezina Trophies in a seven year career. Similar to Pat Verbeek, but in baseball, Carlos May had part of a thumb blown off by a mortar in an off-season accident while training in the National Guard, but was able to continue his career. I remember this being a big story because May was coming off a great rookie season, and played for the White Sox and I was a White Sox fan.

In terms of his undrafted status and later NHL success, I'd really compare Marchment to Alex Burrows as the two most unlikely NHL success stories, assuming Marchment can keep it up. Burrows though has a leg up, he spent wayyy more time in the ECHL than Marchment, who was moreso an AHLer before making it in the NHL. 900+ games for Burrows and some playoff magic doesn't hurt either.

@@RobTalksHockey True, but most NHL goalies of the era had a catcher not unlike a baseball glove, no doubt where they originated. And the leg pads were originally cricket pads.

I was never much of a fan of Pierre Turgeon. In fact, I thought he was kind of a little too soft. But for Hockey Canada to ban him from international competition just because he didn't get involved in that massive scrap between the Russians and Team Canada in the WJC's in '87 is just flat out stupid on their part. And if that's what's also keeping him out of the HHOF? Well, that makes it even more stupid. Like I said, not much of a fan of his. But he was a very good player, and should indeed been elected to the Hall already.

If Pierre Turgeon was named Peter Sturgeon, he would have been selected on the national team many times. That's just another instance of discrimination against Québécois players.

Y'know... I wondered sometimes why it seemed like Turgeon wasn't often considered amongst some of the best of his era. Granted I was born in 90 so I wasn't super aware of his entire career, esp not early (didn't get great TV reception in mom's womb, nor my dad's nutsack) he was always an absolute stud on some already pretty good Blues teams in my early hockey watching days. I suppose the int'l stuff has something to do with it!
@RRaquello

I remember trying to explain to some dumb Islander fans that the World Junior fight and Turgeon's non-participation in it was the reason he wasn't in the Hockey Hall-of-Fame, and they said it was stupid and started yelling at me like it was my fault! I had nothing to do with it. He don't belong there anyway, but that fight is one reason he's not there.
