Spot on. Picks have long been over-valued, but GMs don't want to admit they are bad at picking
@brianhum8765 Жыл бұрын
Some people are too stupid to understand that compared to other sports, it's harder to evaluate hockey players at such a young age than probably any sport except baseball because development wise they're further away from being pro ready (look at the average age of drafted NFL players vs NHL or MLB). It's not basketball or football where most draft picks are not only in the pros the fall after the draft but are playing WAY closer to the level of the established pros or even better (you see rookie RBs and WRs dominate within a month of being in the NFL every season) whereas in hockey all rookies outside of the McDavids and Makars clearly are still a few years from being as good as everyone else. So obviously if you're good at identifying undervalued players that are a little older, already in the league (so they're further down the development path than rookies), you should trade draft picks for them because the hit rate will be much higher. A lot of players will also take a discount to play in Vegas for a number of reasons including the lack of income tax so you can sign free agents cheaper than almost any other team in the league (particularly the Canadian teams).

Florida's D couldn't handle all this added movement because they hadn't played a team that moved the puck as well as Vegas in the neutral zone. @STARPHASE Жыл бұрын
It didn't get miraculously better. But we all know how hockey players will play through injuries and pain. He wasn't going to sit out the playoffs if he didn't have to. He, among many other players on every team, was playing through an injury. It's not that hard to grasp. Teams have to have doctor proof of an injury in order to LTIR players, and Stone DOES have a history of back problems. None of that means he can't return to the playoffs before he's 100% recovered. He was recovered enough. And so, he played. And as a Kings fan, I HATE Vegas. But the narrative that Stone wasn't actually injured in ridiculous.
@MrLuchenkov Жыл бұрын
@@STARPHASE It's a weak argument for a weak system. Yes, Vegas used that loophole. Mark Stone should have played earlier in the season or not play at all in the playoffs. With that said, I don't blame the player (in this case, Vegas), I blame the game. Chicago did it first. Then Tampa and 1-2 others. Now Vegas. It's a system that needs to be revamped, that's all. An easy fix would be that for a player to be allowed to participate in the playoffs, he needs to have played at least 15-20 games in the year. If a player doesn't count towards salary cap, then he shouldn't play in the playoffs, period. It's a dumb system that has allowed several teams to go late in the playoffs by exploiting a loophole. It doesn't matter if it's Vegas, Tampa or Chicago: it should be fixed.
@kallemetsahalme5701 Жыл бұрын
i agree the system is off but requiring x games played during regular season brings a whole different set of issues. what if some junior recruit or free agent is needed to step up after injuries or whatever. to me it makes more sense that players in playoffs do affect the gap too. so if player x joins the team on first playoff match then the wage gap is counted from that and goes over the limit and the team is not allowed to play until they drop enough guys to get under the limit. ofc in theory it still allows guys to play for free or for nominal fees but if that happened then i think the nhl would be in sewers. just imagine gm of anaheim calling ovi, mcdavid, ekblad, hedman and bunch of others "wanna come play for 1 mil n the playoffs, we are sure to win" it reverts back to the fact regular season is very secondary so it makes no sense for wage gap to focus on regular season. if anything during regular season the gap could be nonexistent to promote some really stacked teams but before playoffs they need to even the playfield (though i dont really want this but it would make more sense than "free playoffs")

Your sensational delivery nailed it early. Billionaires were tired of spending the money and being perpetual losers. Sorry to break this to everyone, but the League has revenue sharing because the bottom ten don't make money. Arizona has taken dead contracts just to meet the minimum spend. So finally, after seeing Billionaires wonder why a fire pit was a better investment and the team sells four times over in 10 seasons, maybe new rules were a good idea. Vegas, did everything right, but you needed nearly ten minutes when you were done at 1:50. If Seattle wins in 6 (which they may), who cares? You'll make this video again. In retrospect, it only took the Flyers 7 Seasons to win a Cup. They figured out that beating everyone up was the answer. They even went back-to-back. Jared McCann and Vince Dunn had amazing seasons, Matty Beniers won the calder, the goaltending is getting better, a lot of our nonheadliners like eeli tolvanen, daniel sprong, and morgan geekie had great seasons as well. I hope that we can accomplish what vegas has. In my opinion, we just have to fix our defense and goaltending. We have a solid top pair in larsson and dunn, oleksiak and borgen are good together but not top, but we have no solid third line defense. The goaltending is getting better. Grubauer really found his groove in the playoffs and Martin Jones is good when he wants to be. I hope this next season, Grubi can carry that confidence he had in the playoffs into our regular season because if he can, I think that will really solve a lot of our goaltending issues. We just really need a reliable backup. Like I said, Jones is good when he wants to be but when hes not, hes REALLY NOT. I'm really upset we shipped Sprong and Geekie because I thought they were great for us, especially Sprong, a solid bottom 6 in my opinion. I hope whoever we get to replace him does well. It's much easier to come up with some bullshit and claim someone else had some 'unfair' advantage then it is to own up to your own failings, is the long and short of it.

This is a great video which provides unequivocal proof for the point that I have been making for sometime about Bettman and the future of NHL: Bettman's incessant push for expansion has finally come home to roost, catalyzed by changing the expansion team's draft and player selection. This has come at the expense of the loyal fan bases in all other cities. Bettman came into the NHL to expand 'South' and he accomplished that at the expense of other teams. This is not to take any credit away from Vegas. They deserve the cup, especially after watching this informative piece covering all their trades and draft picks - great management and a good organization. But this wouldn't have been the case without the latest rule changes, tipping the scale in their favor. As a long-time hockey fan, I am getting less and less interested in hockey and more and more interested in spending my time and money into sports organizations that don't randomly change the rules to favor certain vision of the King (Bettman). I will keep an eye on the NHL, hoping for a future that is more equitable, but will not be going or watching any games in full. Personally, the new NHL is not for me, but it is a game that I love. I hope that this bias will be removed in the future so fans from established teams could also benefit from the game once again, and realize that team building is a long-term investment that is only accomplished through draft picks, player development and a certain level of luck. Now, it is all about how quickly can an expansion team win the cup. Peace....

“Draft picks, player development and a certain amount of luck”. You described any team in any sport. I am “new money” for sure. First hockey game I ever watched was the Golden Knights. But I instantly loved the sport. I’ve read a lot of history and watched a lot of KZbin videos on the old days so I could get a sense of the history of the sport. I’m no hockey historian but damn it has never been “fair”. Montreal got the best players for decades and everyone else got their scraps. Talking about teams being in cap hell like it doesn’t apply to all leagues with a cap is crazy too. Don’t sign dumbass long term deals. In the NFL you have the Browns giving Watson a fully guaranteed contract to a dude who hasn’t played in a few years and may be a off field liability. Of course they did though. They are the Browns. Terrible organization; always have been and always will be. If all their moves don’t work out then they will be sentenced to years of sucking no matter the changes they make. I reference NFL because there is one team that has managed the cap better than anyone and they won six super bowls as a reward. The Knights operate with a lot of similarities to the Patriots. Especially with the building through free agency thing instead of the draft. Finding players to fit a system rather than focusing on stars. Easier said than done but that is what they are doing.

It's the most competitive way to run a team; with a fixed salary cap you HAVE to be maximizing each assets value/$. How do you go about doing that; don't give your players those stupid albatross contracts so that if they start declining (like Reilly Smith did), it's far easier to move them. You're also a sought after destination, in a state with no income tax and you're better than most teams at identifying undervalued players so you can make huge profits signing FAs/trading for players below their correct cost. Allowing emotions to get in the way of good decision making is what causes managers to do stupid things like handing out "faithful employee" and albatross contracts; you can ask teams like Detroit how that turns out.

It still took them 6 seasons to get the Cup, about as long as it took the Avs after the implosion of 16-17. I give their talent scouts and GM full marks, but, what happened that year shows how dumb everyone else was. Not repeatable. But enjoy the Cup. My biggest question with how they Knights are being run is, is it sustainable long term? Eventually teams will either be very careful making deal with Vegas, OR teams will start operating just like Vegas, and thus, Vegas won't be so special. With Vegas' cap issues and lack of prospects, they'll eventually run out of assets to flip. In theory, at least. They can probably keep it up for a few more seasons, but I just can't see it being a super long term way of doing things. They bought their cup, but that is always going to be at the cost of the team down the stretch.

At least as long as their key scouts and front office execs are still around, they identify talent better than most teams, Vegas is one of the more desirable locations to play in, they have no income tax, the team's proven both to be able to win and that they'll spend as much money both cap wise and around the team to support it whether it's all the pregame shows, their lavish off season team events, etc.; they have a lot of factors going in their favor compared to other teams. If you can both identify hidden talent and get free agents to take less money than everywhere else to play for you, you got a decent shot but yea once they have to replace those scouts and execs that are mining all those diamonds it may not work anymore.

I would hope most competent GM's could put together a contender starting from a clean slate and being able to pick from already established NHLers. Obviously vegas gambled and won, and theres a lot of fanbases that would love to see their team just win one in their lifetime. However, realistically how long is this sustainable with no farm system? Tampa bay, colorado, pittsburgh, detroit, chicago etc can/have been able to sustain cup contenders for very long periods. Detroit was a legit threat for the cup for at least 20 of their 25 year streak because of drafting and development AND FAs. Happy for vegas fans, truly, and seattle fans for already being playoff teams but the caveat will be, at some point. They will have to draft well. If they change the ltir rules for playoffs and the cap which also seems likely, drafting will become important much quicker. While yes, vegas won a chip and thats awesome for them, at some point in the near future their model will be unsustainable. Theyve basically just flipped expansion teams to have good short term success and suck later, than sucking at the start to be good later.

While some of your statement is true about drafting, Vegas just might have let the cat out of the bag about the fact that drafting may be overrated when it comes to building a winning team. It's what we all thought historically, and what we've been told. But maybe it's more important to build an elite pro scouting staff. I mean, even Florida only had 3 drafted players on their roster these playoffs. What does that tell you? Neither team really was playing with drafted players, yet there they were in the cup finals. Obviously drafting is important, I just think Vegas may have taught all of us that scouting may be an even more important factor once you get past the first round players. Everything after the 1st round is a crap shoot as far as evaluating talent. Evaluating talent of older players who've already made into the league, but are under utilized, may be the better route. The video even stated..."a few players you luck out with, but that many, it sure couldn't be all luck". I think Vegas exposed the league. They exposed the fact that most teams don't have competent GM's, or elite pro scouts, are boring, and aren't thinking outside the traditional box the way GM's are doing. A Connor Bedard is obvious. But past the first round, how easy is it to really evaluate an 18 y/o player vs evaluating players in the 20-24 y/o range(or older) the way McFee is doing. Vegas will have drafted players make their team. But I also think their philosophy is to find under utilized talent, along with making trades, and signing free agents. Vegas understands players want to play for that org, so trades & free agents will be a big part of how they operate going foreword, and likely keep them competitive for years on end. It very well be the new model for teams to catch up to.
@jakerain2820 Жыл бұрын
@@Bouncer-id1rh my point is its not just developing but draft picks and prospects are also assets that can be used in trades. All teams have or should have great scouting. They all have the same tape and advanced stats but what happens when you dont actually draft, and dont build those extra assets is you handcuff your team when enough of your moves dont pan out. Theres nothing special about what vegas is doing. It comes down to odds. Vegas just hasnt been around long enough for the odds to hurt them a lot. But it will. Its inevitable and an absolute guarantee. Its vegas. They knew their best chance to gamble was now when the team is new still and have the assets to do so. Eventually EVERY team needs draft assets. Thats not so much an argument on development, but supplementing tradeable assets.
@Bouncer-id1rh Жыл бұрын
@@jakerain2820 Dude, of course drafts assets is important, and who says Vegas doesn't have that now? I see some pretty good young players on their Henderson team, a number of whom came in and played pretty well when they had some injuries this year. They like everyone else have players in the pipeline, plus like everyone else, drafts picks. They just don't have a Bedard in the pipeline, but who does? You act as if they have a bunch of beer league players only at the lower levels. But, Vegas has CLEARLY shown to be an elite org when it comes to their pro scouts evaluating talent, nobody in the league has done a better job in that dept. So when you factor they have talent in the pipeline, have shown they're great at evaluating under utilized talent, AND making the trades for that talent, are able to make trades for high end talent, and have no issues signing free agents, there's nothing currently that tells me that org is going to have issues putting a really good team on the ice for years to come...maybe not a Stanley Cup Champion, but good teams. Your problem is, you compare the rest of the league's incompetence and just assume it's inevitable for Vegas. Had you thought maybe not? I mean, Tampa's mngt is also one of the best in the league, how long has it been since Tampa has put a lousy team on the ice...hell, seems like it's been forever. They've had something like one losing season the last 13-14 years. Vegas is likely going to be the Tampa of the west for a long time. Yeah maybe in 2037 Vegas may be terrible, but don't act like you now they're going to be as bad as the rest of the morons GM's & owners that make up the majority of the league. I'd be curious if the numbers were closer to the last 5 winners if you included players picked from the expansion draft. Not that it should be included, but also guys they got for not picking others in the expansion draft. IE looking at guys who have been with the org the last five years. Looking at the names you brought up, it looks like they may not be quite as high as Caps or Blues, but they might be more comparable. Ultimately thought provoking content, so good on yeah! Only reason I mention it, is of course they are going to have a small amount of draft picks playing for them five years out. Most middle to late round picks that might make it, are 22-23 and might just be cresting from the minors now. (Highly touted guys aside). I just think that number might be a little leading, even if the general point you're trying to make about Vegas recycling teams excess to find proper game changers. Wild Bill, Marchesualt etc. Ultimately, Vegas has should be commended for the salary cap dancing + aggressive moves they have made over the last five years. Getting Eichel, if you get a chance at a player like him you do it, but you run the risk of Tuch kind of being one of those sleeper guys and becoming a star in Buffalo that Vegas is so good at unearthing. They won it all, it's beside the point! Furthermore, doing the Stone deal, bringing in Lenher, moving out Fleury, finding other solutions in net as they have needed them, bringing in Peitrangelo. I feel like the boom bust cycle of the cap will catch them eventually, but they have done an admirable job of extending their competitive window further then I'd have guessed it was going to last when I looked at them finishing as finalists to Washington. I will say, the NHL has learned from its expansion experiments in Atlanta, Nashville, Columbus and Minnesota. They expansion drafts were far less helpful, and if you ask me the pendulum has swung maybe a tad too far in the opposite direction, but I am glad the two new teams have a chance to build/generate interest. The league adapted and didn't play ball with Seattle like they did with McPhee, but they kept their powder dry, stuck to the model of taking alot of quality D-men, their a tough team to manage, they play alot of close games which probably cost them on the margins in year one, but are definitely no joke as we all saw in the play offs this year. The oilers fan in me is both excited and nervous to see the pacific growing stronger with LA, SEA and LV all tough teams. Who knows maybe Anaheim or one of the other teams will take a surprise step forward.

As of your first statement, it's surprisingly not even close. From the expansion draft : Brayden McNabb, Jonathan Marchessault, William Carrier and William Karlsson. Add to that the only drafted player on the team in the playoffs, Nicolas Hague. And that's it. 5 players total. Shea Theodore and Reilly Smith were acquired in a trade for the expansion draft, so technically not drafted. And the 3 other players mentioned that were drafted are most likely Cotter, Dorofyev and Korczak, who didn't play a single playoffs game.

@@CharlesABelair I appreciate you digging, i took a look at some of their rosters, because I remembered a few of the early guys. You're right, they have done a good job juggling in new guys almost every year as well as competing to an impressive level every year. While, I am skeptical of them doing actually doing anything revolutionary. They have been excellent identifying guys on others teams that would achieve more in Vegas.

This is why I don’t understand what anyone would pay a billion for Ottawa. Just go the expansion route. I’m sure it’s more complicated than that, but it’s like the man said, you’re not inheriting someone else’s mistakes.

I’m a Vegas fan, and if it’s not the Knights, I root for the Kraken. I love seeing the new kids on the block outsmart everybody.

Give me a break they won fare and square yeah they made big mistakes like trading away marc andre flurry and nate schmidt away and missing the playoffs was karma for doing flurry dirty but the golden knights were not the only team to make the cup final in ther 1st year that goes to the st Louis blues i hope for the next 20 years i hope Vegas wins the cup like it or Vegas is a hockey city they had teams in the past before get used to Vegas being in the playoffs because the Vegas golden knights are here to stay

I've been waiting my whole life to see the leafs win thr Cup and then Vegas comes and wins in a few years? Not fair, they clearly gave Vegas too much as an expansion team. Screw the NHL for disrespecting all of the long time fans with a hand out to a new city!
