I like how even in this generation, there's legitimately still the question of who's the best between Sakic and Yzerman. Absolute legends.
@chanses7576 Жыл бұрын
Sakic and CMac have done some incredible things for the Avs. Sakic has pulled off some insane trades and I think he's developed a culture that is similar to teams in his prime, hearing him and Forsberg talk on DNVR about what those teams were like was awesome, you can tell he wants his guys to have a similar experience. Also trading Duchy, was the best thing to ever happen to the Avs franchise.
@Dutchovenderlinde Жыл бұрын
I would say that the Patrick Roy trade was the best thing to ever happen to the Avs, but the Duchy trade was the second-best. I love what Sakic and CMac have done for this team!

@@Dutchovenderlinde quite very well could be. Definitely started a winning culture within the Avs franchise that's lead us to this point.

Cheveldayoff has to be up there, never made a mistake in his career, always drafts right and look how the Dubois trade worked out. Also he has never signed a big free agent because they dont want to come to Winnipeg yet has a cup contender. This is the definition of building from within
@jcanfieldschatz Жыл бұрын
Rob, as an avid Avalanche fan, I've been able to watch all but 5 games going back to the 2016-17 season. Sakic really turned the ship around. I think hiring Coach Bednar was probably one of his best & overlooked signings. Super Joe had kind of a rough start to his GM career, with that totally abismal 2016 season. However, after the Duchene trade, he's been nothing outside of brilliant.
@jcanfieldschatz Жыл бұрын
I will also say that while I love what Sakic has done with the Avs and agree that he's made some outstanding moves that lead to the Cup in 2022, I would rate his drafting lower. The Avs have kind of "wasted" a handful of First Round picks. All 1st Rounders who didn't workout for the Avs: Tyson Jost, Martin Kaut, Alex Newhook, Justin Barron and Oscar Olausson (he still could work out). However, he has flipped most of them for more draft capital.

Amazing these 3 players. Like Joe Sakic and Steve Yzerman. I remember watching them, collecting them and such in the 1990's only to see them be even better GM's than players. And that is saying something! Its amazing!
@v4v819 Жыл бұрын
Dude enough with your backhanded compliments... They are both HOF's that's on the top 100 NHL players of all time list... I'd put them both as top 20! So to say they are better GM's... That's ridiculous! They are both among the best centers and captains in sports history and lead their respective teams to multiple Stanley cups while remaining dominant stars in the league for over a decade and on!
@MurtazaPirani Жыл бұрын
Okay but can we talk about income tax advantage. Certain teams have a huge advantage because their cap hit/player income ratio is so much better. For example, all canadian teams have a huge disadvantage because the income tax is so much higher there, other teams such as Florida, Tampa, Vegas, have a huge advantage because they have no state tax, therefore players are more likely to take "team friendly" contracts because they're being paid the same as someone being paid slightly higher in a different state
@coolbroccolie6455 Жыл бұрын
The NHL really need to make compensations on the cap hit
@immaculatesquid Жыл бұрын
not slightly. 20% for a florida, texas, nevada versus canadian teams, roughly 10% for other us states versus canada.
@GoodMenstruationAttitude Жыл бұрын
@@coolbroccolie6455 This would be great but the NHL will never do this, because they'd rather put the onus upon states to give away tax money than compensate it from their side. I do think it's unethical but I'm a little surprised the Canadian markets don't just forgive taxes on sports players for this reason.

Patrik Allvin has taken a mess of a Canucks franchise and is beginning to make it look respectable again. Great free agent signings and a great trading record so far. His biggest task is coming up soon though when he needs to resign Petey, Hronek and Zadorov so depending on how he does with those contracts and if he drafts well while continuing what he's already doing well I could see him end up on the list of elite GM's in the next decade

SY may not get us a cup, but if we don't get one it will not because SY wasn't smart enough or didn't work hard enough. It's because that's the nhl. He's surprised me in the best ways. Jake Walman was just an aside thrown in and he's a top two defenseman. Holland could have never pulled that off.

EA sports on easy mode, put your team in a sunbelt red state, wait for a cup to materialize. Red state GMs never have to deal with the consequences of their stupid actions and come out looking like geniuses. Contrast that to Winnipeg, Chevy is god level gming to be a subcontender team. It's amazing how easy it is to be a gm in a sunbelt red state, like if people only knew the challenges of places like Winnipeg. You can't even draft properly as you have to avoid players who won't want to play in Winnipeg. You pretty much have to draft players from the colder parts of Canada or the colder parts of the mid west if you want a shot in hell at keeping them around. You aslo have to add an entire tier of scouting to ensure you don't get a locker room cancer who's gonna make everyone miserable mid winter.

I'm definitely curious to see what Grier does with the sharks. Obviously their horrid start was maybe worse than anticipated, but it looks like Grier has a rebuilding plan in mind. Also, the ability to move most EK65's contract is starting off very strong. The Addison trade was robbery imo, and the team has a ton of rental assets for next year. Also identifying Justin Bailey is looking very smart. Musty is also obviously looking very good and Smith is developing as expected, but we obviously need time to see if any of his other picks will pan out. Though, also, Ohkotiuk is looking like a diamond from the Meier trade, and currently Zetterlund has 1 more point and 3 more goals than Timo Meier. So that trade is looking very good for the Sharks.

Yzerrman drafted once wrong! He chose Cossa over Wallsted! Neither of them have played in the NHL yet, but Wallsted is/was the better pick! He has always had a good scouting team in Tampa and Detroit supporting him. But, he bears the responsibility and the choice. He does this job very well I would also give him a 10 out of 10
@europason2293 Жыл бұрын
I do agree that Jesper is currently looking like the better goalie, but until they both play in the NHL, it's impossible to say which pick was better. Cossa definitely has more upside given his size and athleticism, so it's not crazy to think that he could develop into a monster. I'm a Wings fan and I would prefer to have Wallstedt in our pipeline, but I can respect Stevie taking the swing on Cossa even if the pick doesn't work out. Trey Augustine is looking like he has the potential to be an NHL starter, so the Wings have some goalie insurance in case Cossa is a bust.
@JackHoepner Жыл бұрын
@@europason2293 I'm also a Red Wing fan and just wanted to say, SY is only human (he also makes mistakes) Goalkeepers often take longer to develop and therefore you don't know how their career will progress. I hope I'm wrong and Cossa becomes a star Augustine was a good pick in the 2nd round and could be an alternative or even better (I'm totally on your side) Thank you for sharing your thoughts LGRW

With all due respect, Kelly McCrimmon does not belong here. It should be George McPhee. He orchestrated more than half the moves you mentioned before McCrimmon was GM, and still serves as Vegas' POHO. McCrimmon inherited a well built team the same way the current Avs GM did from Joe Sakic, or dare I even say Ken Holland did from Jim Devellano with the Red Wings, or Julien Brisebois did with the Lightning from Yzerman.

Habs fan here Our rebuild is going horribly. Trades have been pretty good but the most important part of the rebuild has been dog shit. The draft is where you’re supposed to grab your franchise cornerstone players but not us, we love us some good character guys with low ceilings but high floors. Why have generational scoring talent when you can have a right handed defenceman who can pass the puck off the boards out of the zone?!? 😃 Literally a 2 decade long mistake that will haunt the organization

Jim Nill likes to let players walk for nothing and sign depth players for multimillion dollar contracts with NMC's. He has changed his strategy in the draft a little. He used to try to draft defensive 4th line forwards and undersized offensive defencemen in the first round, but looks like someone fixed that (by lying to him that Wyatt Johnston was a defense first forward). He's been pretty good when he decides to trade a player, but if a prospect doesn't work in the Star's system, the have zero value to him.
