Another thing to consider is that teams coming into a season with expectations will spend training camp and preseason trying to implement new things to reach the next level. A prime example being the Florida Panthers who went from the President's trophy to squeaking in as the 2nd wildcard after Paul Maurice took over and made significant changes. Those changes resulted in 2 finals appearances and winning it all. Teams with low expectations tend to have quite a few roster spots open and that gets the compete level going a bit earlier which can help come out of the gate strong but once the top teams get rolling it falls apart for those younger, rebuilding teams.

I got a beef with labelling this video "McDavid", when it has nothing to do with him. There are about 20 goals by Hughes in this vid, though, and a good discussion on the value of veterans. Why not name it something closer to correct? Thumbs down for the total head-fake.

Its pretty obvious. Top teams that went far in playoffs play a ton more intensive, draining, injury prone games. Meanwhile, the ones that missed the playoffs got a longer summer to recuperate from all those injuries they didnt have to fight through. Guess who makes it to season start healthier and in better shape? After the season's gone on for a while, the health difference makes less impact and the regular skill difference comes around again.

I am so happy with the Flames start, if it keeps them out of the bottom 10 then it is great for Montreal’s draft selection. The Flames are going to fall off, it’s a matter of time with how mid the construction is. But those extra 4 or 5 points could make the difference between 8th OA (and MTL gets Floridas pick) and 13th OA pick (MTL gets Calgary’s)

Its because any games lost is more you have to win in a row and playing the percentages shoes that most good teams win 60-70% of their games to make it to the playoffs. The more you lose the more you have to win now with less games

I think, if anything, history has shown it is more about which teams are red hot in the second half of the season that really matters come the playoffs, so worrying about whether or not your team is off to a big start is just not productive.

Along with looking at samples of actual wins/losses/points, looking at analytics can help make predictions. Sort of! During their disastrous start last season, for example, the Oilers' analytics (at least based on the most readily available data from Natural Stat Trick and Moneypuck), were looking good. Basically, they were around top-5 in the league at generating dangerous scoring chances, and were giving up those types of chances at a low rate. But their shooting percentage on those chances was unusually low, and save percentage was extremely low...like a league outlier. It was inevitable that the shooting % would sort itself out. The goaltending was less certain, but it was safe to assume that one of the goalies would improve at least to a mediocre level. Sure enough, that's exactly what started to happen, and then the Oilers fired their coach...but, luckily, they continued to improve. Skinner had a ridiculous hot streak at the same time that the Oilers were at the top of the league by analytics, which is where the Oilers had 2 ridiculous winning streaks. As a counter-example from last season, the Canucks' underlying numbers during their hot start were decent, but not near the top of the league. They had an unusually high shooting % and save %. You would have thought it was inevitable that they would crash by mid-season at the latest...but they just kept rolling and rolling. And their analytics by the end of the season were actually really good.
@lukejaffray25182 ай бұрын
Problem is that the oilers having a terrible start last year is probably what cost them 1st in the pacific division to end the season and made them have a harder time in the playoffs playing the Kings 1st instead of a wildcard team and one could make the argument that playing the kings and getting beat up (lots off oilers suffered injuries in that series they then played with) lead to the Stanley cup loss.... So ya losing the first few games that are some of the games that everyone though were free points could cost them in the end

….every sport does this the NFL maybe earlier like 3 weeks in since they play the least games compared to the other major sports and it’s also the same formula. You have young talent with vets who have been there and know what to do and the vets may not even be the stars of the team it’s just that..they been here before. Look at any of your favorite teams history and look at their winning teams (even if they didn’t win any or won multiple championships but they were always competitive) vets with the composure for high pressure situations and young talent who have unbelievable skills who can learn and hone their skills.

Although its still early in the season and anything can happen, I can't see the Oilers doing what they did last season. On top of that, its far easier to lose then win games. Any team can go on a streak, of wins or losses. The Oilers are in, arguably, the easiest division in the league. They should have no issues with getting back in it, especially if the refs favor them with more PP's. If the refs dont, it wont happen.

no panic in Edmonton...First game loss, outplayed, 0 goals, Game 2 lost, but played better 2 goals, Game 3 should have been well in control but 2 goals called back, Game 4 a win in OT, 4 goals not including 1 called back, Game 5 solid win 4 goals, Game 6 loss to a good team, Game 7 loss to another good team but in OT, Game 8 dominating win 4 goals, 50 shots... meanwhile goals against went from 6-5-4-3-2 then bumped up to 4& 3 then dropped to 0. Record -3-4-1 ....this is nowhere near the start they had last season of 1-7 with many more goals against scored.. As to the hot streaks of other teams, good for them; they've had lots of rest and maybe a chip on their shoulder....that's what makes the game great but eventually they too will lose games.

The NHL really needs to fix goalie interference!!? They've gotta do something cuz some of the bullshit theyre calling goalie interference is just downright ridiculous!!?? It should only be called goalie interference if its obviously clear that goalie was interfered with and really didnt have chance to make the save!!?? This bullshit of them calling good goals back cuz goalie was barely touched is just absurd!!? And half the time its the goalie initiating the contact!? Its absolutely ridiculous and it needs to be fixed asap!!!?? They need to fix offside reviews too cuz this bullshit of teams abusing the rule and getting good goals called back cuz they broke out the microscope and saw guys skates a hair over the line literally half a millisecond b4 puck crossed is ridiculous and is against the spirit of the rule and the game!!?? Theyre taking away good goals cuz of shit that really doesn't matter cuz it doesnt give anyone any kind of significant advantage!? With the speed of the game i think players deserve a lil leeway and benefit of the doubt when its that close that they've gotta zoom in and take minutes to look at!? The rule is there for AGGREGIOUS offsides situations where a team is getting a significant advantage from being offsides!!!? Its not there to be abused and have them zooming in to look for the tiniest lil sliver of ice between guys skates and line!!? If they can't tell its offsides without zooming in then player should get benefit of the doubt i think!!? Cuz if u cant clearly see guys offsides without having to zoom in then guy is clearly not getting any real advantage from it!!?
