@simoncaton1226 I agree. But here's the thing The game is physical, there are physical players at all ages and that's just part of the game. The kids just like me grew up watching players engage in fights (some of which were completely staged) and loved it. Now no kids shouldn't be fighting without gloves and a helmet on nor would I encourage it but it does happen. It's part of the game. Parents know the risks of signing their kids up, players learn to understand the risks as they get older. If you don't want to fight you don't have to. But if you do it's a choice. Just like drinking alcohol or smoking. There's consequences. I don't think fighting is that serious, nor is frequently doing it. Hits to the head cause the most issues and all leagues have cracked down on that. So no I don't support kids fighting, but if they choose its their decision and up to them and their families. I would prefer they settle it that way than to kick someone with a skate, slash them in the face, or run someone from behind or deliver a head shot. Those can cause far more damage.

Exactly they’ll never remove fighting from the NHL it would destroy the league. They removed fighting from the QMJHL which just makes it more dangerous for players who want to take on an enforcer role in the NHL because there fighting skill won’t be as well developed compared to players from junior leagues that still allow fighting. Plus if you’re a super star player nobody’s just gonna beat the shit out of you, no player wants to be the reason Connor McDavids career ended early.

A sanctioned bout, is a legal contract that a fight will take place under state rules and both parties agree. This is why its a crime to hit someone after the fight is over, as it is no longer part of the sanctioned bout and both fighters are beholden to the law of the land. I don’t think this is a good comparison, hockey and UFC. I’m not against fighting in hockey, but its all a legal gray area. Mostly its a handful of jersey and whiffed haymakers so people don’t care. Whenever someone is genuinely hurt, is when these discussions take place again.

several thoughts: what kept hockey somewhat save despite its speed is the threat of being wrecked by a 2 m+ guy if you do something shitty similar to the issue with boardchecks from behind becoming an issue, because players arent used to being chased and hit anymore compared to 90's 2000's and therefore not being ready on the boards I think banning checking and fighting too early will lead to bigger injuries later on I'd rather learn how to take a check when everyone weighs 50kg than 110kg :D

I know it’s very rare, but the chance of getting knocked unconscious and hitting your head against the ice while totally limp *is* a legitimate health and safety concern. @20thCenturyManTrad
@20thCenturyManTrad Ай бұрын
@@AgxntOrange You will not eliminate bad guys that need to be fought, so you have to make sure your good guys are ready to step in. Sport has traditionally been used for exactly that, so that men have some form of combat so they don't take it to the street, as much. Do you want some thug to just be able to rob a woman in broad daylight and have no man step in and fight out of honor for the woman? Well you have to reward his bravery, or else that woman is very likely to be killed if she resists, or robbed at the very least and possibly killed anyway. There have already been incidents of men not protecting women being attacked, and it's because your culture of no honor punishes men for defending innocent lives. A culture without honor, means a culture with no good men, and no one who will fight for their fellow man. Sport engrains this in us as young lads, he hit my friend, I'll beat him up. Later a woman is attacked in the street, "that man is attacking a woman, I will go to protect her." I do not enjoy going on such a long diatribe in regard to sport, but you brought up the asinine idea of eliminating honor.

Fighting on skates is not the same as real fist fighting. It's the speed on checks and high hits. Gordie Howe lived to 88. Nuff said.
@LordBitememan
@LordBitememan Ай бұрын
I mostly agree with this, but with a few caveats: - Individual cases probably aren't a good metric, but in general way back then the game was slower and average player size was smaller. So that would result in fewer chronic brain injuries on the whole. - Howe took some nasty hits in his time and his son says there was a lot of cognitive impairment in Gordie's last decade and a half that would be consistent with repeated concussions. - Even on skates a lot of this window of CTE cases comes from the days when enforcers were taking their helmets off an engaging in lengthy cocaine fueled hammer fests on each other's heads.

Meh, Canadian fan here. I’ve never watched a game for the fights. I’ve always loved the good fights, but I’ve never watched the game for them. As a child, I found them exciting, yet having lived through the post-enforcer era, I didn’t find the game less exciting. Especially through the anti-fight era, it’s clear fighting has its place, but it doesn’t define the game. We used to expect 1 or 2 fights per game, and now it’s not uncommon to have a couple games without a fight. The fight still happens, and it still matters, but the game has become faster and more focused on skill than ever before. I love it. Break the code, get broken; but the focus is more on the talent, imo. The game is faster than it’s ever been, and the brief period of zero physical consequences seems to have departed as well. I really think this particular time is some of the best hockey we’ve ever seen. It’s seems the balance has been found, for the time being.

I’ve thought about this a lot, and what I think it comes down to is awareness and innovation. Before, players were not aware of cte, and did not know the risk. I think players need to be educated on the dangers, and if they choose to continue, that is their choice. However, there still needs to be equipment innovation and rules to try and minimize unnecessary trauma. Fighting and hitting is part of hockey, it’s the sport, and the risk that comes with it.

If players don't want to fight, they don't have to. Fights in hockey are mutual, both parties agree to fight. So if the players want to fight knowing the risk, let them fight. UFC hasn't become a wrestling league just because of CTE, they know the risk when they sign up for it. And in hockey they can opt out of fighting in games if they so choose.

Nazem Kadri was a loose canon too... more so than Rempe. Almost ended his career as he really hurt a couple guys. Rempe is just huge, and not really tryin' to hurt people. Those match penalties were pretty soft, to be hones. I'm an AVs fan, so no real skin in this game, but I like seeing young guys keeping the game physical.

It’s not impact the head that causes the problem it’s the fact that your brain swash is inside your skull and when it bangs against the side of your skull apparently that’s not good for it so frankly fighting a lot safer than when they have a collision at 35 miles an hour and your body just stops immediately and your brain keeps going forward and guess what it’s going to be no way to ever take that out of the game unless you just don’t play hockey anymore so why don’t we just all recognize that in life there’s risks and dangerous and if you try to illuminate that then there would be no such thing as race car driving football players hockey players etc.

This rempe kid reminds me of the pitcher from the Dodgers...you know that one dude that will sit there and tell the person at bat what the catcher wants him to throw. Rempe is tall, goofy looking, and is 1 ft 1/2 taller than the majority of enforcers...even towered over Ryan reaves. Now time to fight Wilson Rempe.

I feel like the NHL either needs to get rid of it completely or ramp it way up. This weird limbo thing we're in where the player safety is super inconsistent with what they call but also restricting fighting doesn't work. They either need to hand out more punishment or let the players police the game

Players like rempe need to exist. It's because of them being phased out that we have rookies taking pot shots off the goalies head to deflect it into the goal. There's no such thing as deterrence. Just today Coyle on the bruins did the same exact thing. Tried to bounce it in off samsonovs face. Too bad reaves is a washed up dirty bum. Doesn't fight just throws elbows.

I think that fighting for the sake of fighting is not the case anymore. Players are not employed strictly to fight people on a roster. One thing I do support is punishing fighting in youth sports. There are millions of kids that won’t play in the NHL, so not having that developmental issues and trauma for hockey players would be great. Also forcing kids to use smarts and skill instead of size, toughness will lead to better players of hockey. But hockey has an aura that no other sport has. When it comes to fighting I think it should be heavily penalized but controlled. The system we have in place is great.

I think a big problem with some of the arguments for pro fights in the NHL, forgets that it's not allowed and thus there are no rules in place for what's allowed and what's not. Take MMA, There are strict rules which has to be allowed and they're (to my knowlegde) enforced. It can become a slippery slope if it's not enforced more strictly, either for or against fights. IMO.

Rempe doesn't get $855,000 - that's for 82 games. If he's in the minors, he gets much less. When he's suspended, he loses the salary he would have had for those games. His earning according to Capfriendly are about $230,000. Still more per fight than professional fighters.

I dont think fighting in the nhl is going to cause cte nearly as much as compared to boxing or ufc where guys can hit harder since they have their feet planted on the ground instead of balancing on skates and go on for much longer landing 100s of blows over the course of rounds compared to a hockey fight where it lasts not even a minute and most of the punches land on the back of the guys helmet. Rarely is there ever an actual knockout either, if guys were going out left and right like nick kypreos I would be concerned, that doesn't seem to happen though.

the game of hockey is NOT entertaining with out fighting or hitting. this kids a breath a fresh air in a league thats fallen victim of Americanism destruction of defensive and physical game types. the game needed the red line the two line pass which both regulated the speed to prevent garbage no touch icing. as some one who grew up watching hockey in the 80s and 90s the league is pretty boring, i cant tell you the last time i gave the slightest shit about watching a game.

As a huge MMA fan I’d be a hypocrite to say that two willing partners shouldn’t be allowed to have a go at each other. CTE is definitely a concern but these guys know that well. And I’d rather take few punches from a guy on wobbly legs than a check to the head at 30kmh, that’s for sure. I just think a lot of these guys take on fights they have no chance of winning for the sake of pride or team honor or whatever. That’s when it gets dangerous. If I tried to fight a professional boxer on the street I’d be more concerned about hitting my head on the pavement when he inevitably sleeps me. I feel the same way about massive mismatches in hockey fights. If the sport is already dangerous why take unnecessary damage over ego?
