Danny Carey, the drummer, is one of the best drummers of all time. His time signatures are unique and unexpected, and that's what makes TOOL, TOOL. I have listened to Tool for 25 years and met Maynard, the lead singer, a few times in the 2000s. Millions of music critics will tell you Maynard is one of the most gifted lyricists in all of modern music. As for Schism, it wasn't a good introduction song for you right now. Your ears and mind are not ready for it. The people who are introduced to Tool with Schism usually don't like it, but regret not liking it after they go down the Tool journey. Then they listen to Schism 10 or 15 songs later and then say it's actually incredible. Give it another chance later. Your next Tool song needs to be "Vicarious". If you want a diss track, "Anema" is Maynard wanting the entire city of Los Angeles to fall into the Pacific Ocean! Ha!

A kangaroo court is a trial where the outcome is already decided before it starts. And the head bob thing I feel like is where you are running head long into the biggest musical culture shock of stepping outside of hip hop. The beats in a lot of rock/metal will switch up. Time signatures, especially with bands like Tool and Meshuggah rarely stick to a simple 4/4. They have movements where the entire nature of the song switches up then doubles back on it's self, then breaks down to do it all over again. It keeps the music from being repetitive and predictable.
@NightBL00D_ Жыл бұрын
I have a feeling he just isn’t accustomed to the time signature changes. It was a shock to me at first. The Pot is likely their most basic time sig, mostly 4/4. Tools music is about the journey. My recs: The Grudge, Lateralus (my fave riff ever), Pneuma (especially drum cam), Vicarios, Jambi, 46 and 2. There are so many. #toolarmy
@Sanjayadhikari1 Жыл бұрын
I mostly agree with you, but there’s something about head bobbing that’s just innate and organic. It immediately endears the song you are listening too. For example, Gavin Harrison could run circles around most (even progressive) drummers. His time signatures are as complex as they can get, but, and it’s a big BUT, you can Bob your head to most of his stuff hehe just my 2 cents 🙂
@TGIFrank Жыл бұрын
@@Sanjayadhikari1 I agree that drumming you can bop your head and vibe to is great in and of itself, but music that keeps you guessing is definitely a lot of fun for people who feel like they've heard it all before. It's kind of like the difference between simple poppy sing-along lyrics and complex rhyme schemes that require a little more attention.

Fun Fact about Tool's guitarist Adam Jones: Jones was offered a film scholarship but declined and chose to move to Los Angeles to study art and sculpture. His interest shifted to film, and he began to work as a sculptor and special effects designer, where he learned the stop motion camera techniques he would later apply in Tool's music videos, such as "Sober", "Prison Sex", "Stinkfist", "Ænema", "Schism", "Parabola", and "Vicarious". He graduated in 1987. After graduation, he went to work at Rick Lazzarini's Character Shop. During the next two years, he worked on the TV show Monsters. He designed and fabricated a Grim Reaper makeup and a zombie head on a spike (later used in Ghostbusters II) among others. After that, he went to Stan Winston's special effects workshop, where he worked on Predator 2, sculpting a unique-looking skull for the Predator's spaceship interior. Jones worked on several other films in Hollywood doing makeup and set design, including Jurassic Park, Batman Returns, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Dances with Wolves, and Ghostbusters II. He did the "Freddy Krueger in the womb" makeup for A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, as well as work for A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. He also worked on commercials for salad dressing (never aired), Olympic Paints & Stains (Albert Einstein makeup), and Duracell (boxers and taxicabs).

Just because this one single individual liked the worse and more snoring song better then a good song doesn't mean that it is somehow "more accessible" when it literally doesn't even have a single melodic part and when the lyrics are incredibly non-metaphotocal even!

If lyrics are important for you, 'Vicarious' and '10,000 Days' have some very heavy undertones, but 10,000 days def one of those that takes long to build up. Also Maynard sings for A perfect Circle, and I would recommend Pet and The Noose from that band. Hopefully you will get to other bands like Disturbed, Slipknot, Korn, Tenacious D, and much more cause I would love to see what you think of their music.

If he couldn’t handle Schism there’s no chance he could handle 10000 days at this point. He needs a Tool frame of reference before going there.

There is nothing quite like Tool. Top of their game musicians with great lyrics and vocals from the one and only MJK. There are so many songs that many of us Tool fans can recommend. That said, listen to the lyrics of each song and let the music take you on a ride. Enjoy brotha because there's a pretty good chance you're gonna go down the rabbit hole lol

Interesting fact, Maynard James Keenan, the vocalist for Tool, also collab'd on a track with RATM on their debut album, which is a song I'd put on the listen list if you haven't already. The track is called "Know Your Enemy"

Came here to say this. It's such a killer song. Two of the best bands, and those talented folks had connections despite differing genres, cross-pollination at its best. Both really made the 90s for me.

Progressive rock/metal oversimplified: they fit in the constellation of metal bands, but they're the sort of group that is always sailing out in uncharted waters, pushing out the edges of the map. They play around with time signature, rhythm, instrumentation, lyrics and vocals to do neat and weird things. Personally, I think of them as a metal parallel to bands like Rush and Yes. It is a band where every single member is an absolute master of their instrument, with vocals and lyrics to match. In a way it's like watching a master chef at work; what they put on your plate could be a new twist on something old, or something completely new, and it may not always be to your taste, but always interesting.
@reaperbsc Жыл бұрын
The "it's like watching a master at work" analogy is a perfect way to describe it. You may not always understand, but either way it's mesmerizing.

Maynard is a beast. Fronts 3 bands, and has a winery. Tool is an experience. They have evolved over the last 3 decades. Danny Carey is one of the best drummers of all time. Their sound is going to be very different depending on which album and which decade it's from. They have so many great songs, though.

This is probably the most accessible tool song. You should do more. I'm confident you'll even come around to schism again. It's somewhat difficult to get used to the odd time signatures and switch ups if you've not listened to alot of similar. I also love the lyrics of this one, so many double entendres
@missmyoldhandle2410 ай бұрын
happy to see you gave them another chance. like everyone else said, Schism is like just into the deep end having never touched water. "46 & 2" is pretty much a spiritual experience that transcends all other songs ever made in existence.

The thing you seem to be most driven by is groove. Tool has a number of power groove tunes but they will often incorporate other. complex and nuanced techniques in their songwriting that imbue what you sort of described as a more cerebral experience. Measures in music will have count called a time signature and when that time signature is outside a four count it can be harder to feel the “natural flow” you’re used to... this doesn’t make it good or bad - just a different wavelength or feel. Progressive rock often does this. You might look up Tom Sawyer by Rush for a classic progressive rock tune with a cool groove and some odd time signatures. Another fun song with a cool groove and strange time signature is Never the Machine Forever by soundgarden. I think what you’re after is power groove. Check out Becoming by Pantera or for a hip hop collab - Just Another Victim by House Of Pain and Helmet. Another song by tool I’d recommend is hooker with a penis. I’m not sure you’ll like the music because it’s pretty hard but you’ll love the lyrics.

Schism is easily one of my favorite tool songs ever! The lyrics are deep it's a song about a break up and the heartache of it
@baconforce6616 Жыл бұрын
there's an old saying in the metal/rock circle "Tool is your favorite artist's favorite artist" they are pretty legendary and have arguably never released a bad record. they play with time signatures and polyrhythms (Danny Carey is the best drummer alive and its not close) like nobody else, Maynard's lyricism, vocal range and body of work (check out A Perfect Circle and Puscifer) is the stuff of myth. Adam Jones on guitar is always killer, and Justin Chancellor has some of my favorite bass-lines in all of rock music. the music they make is very nuanced and extremely hard to replicate but somehow still sounds incredible and often hits the mainstream whenever they come around to releasing new music. the only downside is that the fanbase can be pretty zealous and cringey at times - i would know, my Myspace page was clown-circus type shit lmao. keep up the videos Rob love seein you have fun listening to new shit. check out The Mars Volta if you wanna hear some more crazy experimental stuff that slaps for no reason. Cicatriz Esp is a great song

Amazing reaction. Brain and Soul confusion is an incredible way to describe it. Early Tool was my High School days. This was way later and one of their best and most polished songs ever. I think this is around the time Rolling Stone had an article about how they are one of the last true Rock and Roll band left. The only band I’ve found that holds a candle is Mars Volta and they have TOTALLY different influences.

Tool can be a tough listen, especially the first time when the boys are throwing all this shit at you at supersonic speeds. I have to confess that I still haven't wrapped my head around their latest, "Fear Inoculum". I think I have a (very) minor sensory processing disorder and if shit gets too complicated it just sounds like noise. I've been listening to Tool since "Undertow" and I still find new stuff every time I listen to these.
