Proof is at 1:20, Kankuro says "hes not doing it, it will come to Gaaras defense without him doing anything". He is referring to Shukaku controlling the sand to protect Gaara without Gaara needing to do anything.

It was because he knew when to quit, even though he could have defeated Temari pretty much the way he did the sound ninja chick. It wouldn't have suited his strengths to continue because none of the people in the finals were really going to be vulnerable to his jutsu. It's why I said the teachers should have emphasized that fact a tad more, as knowing your limits and when to withdraw is also part of being a ninja. Lee proved, beyond shadow of doubt, that he could be a shinobi in that battle. He just needed to know when to quit, and he would have passed.

It's just, Gaara had just enough energy to still control the sand and catch Lee, breaking his arm and leg. Had he not had that energy, Lee would have won. @@Words-of-encouragement.-. If he were better than Gaara, he would've won lol. Regardless of Gaara having "one move" Lee didn't have enough to penetrate his defenses. Lee at the end of the day has nothing but taijustsu and that was never gonna beat someone with an ultimate defense.
