Its much later revealed that Shukaku was sealed inside Gaara by Chiyo before hes even born, confirming Gaara already had Shukaku even during childhood when he had this fight with Lee.

​@@G4MBIT Yes the tailed beast did help a lot. Shukaku was the one creating sand shields to protect Gaara from Lees attack, Lee was too fast for Gaara to react after he took off his weights. Proof is at 1:20, Kankuro says "hes not doing it, it will come to Gaaras defense without him doing anything". He is referring to Shukaku controlling the sand to protect Gaara without Gaara needing to do anything.

I have to disagree. This fight showed how defensively monstrous Gaara is as a ninja. He ate everything Lee threw at him, forcing Lee to use eight inner gates and still eating that, too, and winning in the end. Lee was outclassed like crazy in this fight.

Had Lee given up at the very end, instead of getting injured, he would have passed the exams. The exams are also about knowing your limits and when to not exceed them. He had proven enough by that point. Coming back and watching this, it's a little sad that this wasn't a little more reinforced by the teachers. Could have saved Lee a whole injury arc.

It was because he knew when to quit, even though he could have defeated Temari pretty much the way he did the sound ninja chick. It wouldn't have suited his strengths to continue because none of the people in the finals were really going to be vulnerable to his jutsu. It's why I said the teachers should have emphasized that fact a tad more, as knowing your limits and when to withdraw is also part of being a ninja. Lee proved, beyond shadow of doubt, that he could be a shinobi in that battle. He just needed to know when to quit, and he would have passed.

@@leohawk776 The thing is, Lee legitimately thought he could win, and almost did. Both he and Gaara were left on the ground, exhausted. It's just, Gaara had just enough energy to still control the sand and catch Lee, breaking his arm and leg. Had he not had that energy, Lee would have won. Plus, as Tanelorn said, it wasn't Lee's ninja way to give up like that, he got it from his teacher, who would eventually risk his own life and almost defeat Jinchurriki Madara with all 8 gates. That's just who they are.
