When I was a teenager many many years ago I was cycling through Cheddar gorge in Somerset England when it started to rain. I took shelter in a crag of rocks and to my surprise saw a plaque beside me saying that the writer of the hymn had taken shelter from rain in the same rocks and that this inspired him to write 'Rock of Ages'

Paul said wretched man I do things that I don't want to do. Surrender, tell you can't do it any more. He forgives all our sins, hang in there, the Lord will lead you on in His time. Give your day to him, read your word, but most of all Talk to Him. Just say "Have you got a minute Lord" He always has. Tell all those past hurts. Ps 23 + Ep: 6 Ask Him to cover you with His precious Blood. The Lord lead you on with His Holy Spirit

There's just something about hymns that modern contemporary Christian music can never touch. Maybe it's because this was written, like other hymns, from the depths of the human soul, from a broken heart, from people at their lowest reaching up to their Heavenly Father in faith. Nowadays the music is so predictable with its chord progressions, and worst of all it is made to fit into the world, not to be a separate light in this present darkness. When I listen to hymns like this, I feel revived and ever closer to God. When I hear contemporary music, I feel empty--it never hits the deepest parts of the heart/mind/soul. I think the issue is most popular modern Christian artists have fallen into what C.S. Lewis called the "Christianity and..." trap (see The Screwtape Letters), like mixing Christianity and rap , hip-hop, or another new genre. "Substitute for the faith itself some Fashion with a Christian coloring."--Screwtape. In trying to reach more people, I fear the world is transforming them, not the other way around. Hate to complain about subjective topics, but I see it a lot at my college. When the modern music starts playing, eyes glaze over and you're just reading a screen. No matter how much I try, I feel like I'm presenting a facade of myself to people around me and to God. So I come here to really speak to my God, my Redeemer, my closest of friends.
@mixxkid17616 жыл бұрын
Don't disagree with some of your thoughts as a high percentage of today's christian music centers strictly on anxiety/depression type themes. Way too much in my opinion. However, do not discredit recent songs like "In Christ Alone" and a fairly new song from Phil Wickham called "Living Hope". Thank God there are still some new songs that still speak to the rich theology, shades of great hymns of the faith. BTW, there are some awful weak lyrics that are considered Hymns as well. Subjective argument to your earlier point indeed.

In Christ Alone is one of my favorite songs but there's an error in the lyrics: There in the ground His body lay Light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious Day Up from the grave He rose again Jesus' body never lay on the ground He was entombed. Jesus was never in the grave If they correct that it's awesome and biblically correct song.

I first heard this hymn at my father's funeral. I was ten years old and barely understood its great meaning. After over 50 years as an unbeliever, I was baptized. This great blessing from my Heavenly Father for His Son's great gift for the redemption of my soul. After I received the gift of the Holy Ghost. As the final hymn, we sang this hymn and now know the great meaning of these inspired words. I hope all can know this gift!

Lyrics: 1 Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee; Let the water and the blood, From Thy riven side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure, Save me from its guilt and power. 2 Not the labor of my hands Can fulfill Thy law’s demands; Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow, All could never sin erase, Thou must save, and save by grace. 3 Nothing in my hands I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling; Naked, come to Thee for dress, Helpless, look to Thee for grace: Foul, I to the fountain fly, Wash me, Savior, or I die. 4 While I draw this fleeting breath, When mine eyes shall close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, See Thee on Thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee.

My dad and his family are from Guam, and his mom (My grandma) would hum this song to every kid in the house, and it would put them straight to sleep. In Guam, this song is actually used at funerals and was called "The Death Song" in our house. Everyone fell asleep to the Death Song. We were trying to find it and what it was called, then my grandpa told us it was this song. Glad to know this is what we fell asleep to for a few decades

The words of these old Hymns are such a great Blessing. They are so Biblically and Theologically sound and they touch the Spirit on a deeper level. Thank God for them!

I knew this tune and had heard this hymn in passing. I only came to the Lord in April this year and we sing it for my first time in church yesterday. It was wonderful. I am having a tough day today and played this and it is astounding and wonderful.

Music is such a strong spell that man has made to show our love. Today, it's more love for materialistic things rather than for family, wife, or God. Listen to a song well enough and you can feel what the writer was feeling when he wrote it. Something worldly music will never be able to accomplish.

Nothing in my hands I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling; Naked, come to Thee for dress, Helpless, look to Thee for grace: Foul, I to the fountain fly, Wash me, Savior, or I die.

Total dependence on God is displayed here, wash me Saviour or I die, if the Saviour will not wash me, I will surely Die. That is how much the Writer of this Hymn depended on God. He was soo helpless
