No one over 30 yrs of age can't say that a piece of them didn't die with Tom Petty. He created America's soundtrack.
@lalljp3 жыл бұрын
I think of it as the soundtrack of the California Dream, that we saw in movies and TVs all over the world in the 80s and 90s. His songs aren't really for the ones who never left their hometowns, they're for the ones who did leave to run down a dream.

I really only started listening to his music after he passed. He is now my favorite artist. Most artists I usually like a few of their songs, but with Tom Petty, I absolutely love every single one of his songs. I really wished I started listening to him before he passed because I didn't really care too much when he passed. I would've given my life savings to see him in concert before he passed.
@andrewfurst57113 жыл бұрын
Yes I think that's what's so great about Petty & The Heartbreakers, essentially every song from every album is very enjoyable. You clearly "get" that, and to me it's what makes him/them my favorite also. When I've told other people that Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are my favorite band, they'll often say something like "Oh yeah, American Girl, Refugee, Free Fallin'". And I'll say something like "Well yes those are good, but it's really the full albums that I love, not just the "hits". I can think of other artists where their top hits are even more stunning than the top hits of TPATH, but none where each album is awesome from start to finish (I'd say they got a little less consistent in their final 20 years vs. their first 20, but even then the percentage of enjoyable songs remained high). I was fortunate enough to see them in concert while TP was alive, and even when Stan Lynch was the drummer, which IMO was the best period. I suggest that you explore the live official releases from the band, and also search KZbin and the rest of the internet for live Tom Petty concert recordings. They were such a great live band, and the live songs often differed enough from the studio versions that sometimes it's like listening to a "new" song when you hear it live.

I saw him live in Gainesville, FL in 1983 - where he was born and raised - this was after his fourth album and the first time he had performed in Florida since signing his Record Contract - Stevie Nicks came out as an unanounced guest and sang Stop Draggin' My Heart around with him - I saw him again in Gainesville the following year - the first time I think he opened with American Girl and the second time he closed with it - God bless him
