Really liked this session. I started playing a high g uke, moved to a low g uke, then to a baritone and now play a tenor guitar tuned DGBE…great fun!

if you like the change in tone and resonance in changing from re-entrant tuned high g ukulele to linear tuned (low d) baritone ukulele, you may also be interested in cuatro tuning on the baritone uke. that is a re-entrant tuning, with the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd higher and higher in pitch as in a linear (low g) ukulele, but in cuatro tuning, the 1st string is an octave lower than it would be in the linear tuning. there are even more low strings!

I have both baritone and tenor and I love them both for different reasons. I've developed tendonitis on my right wrist, so I primarily play baritone and guitar now. Only because it's a different attack than a tenor.

Excellent video. Thank you. I have a concert with low g and debating may self between getting a low g tenor or baritone. I like the resonance and low pitch of the baritone more but I am not sure if I want to learn new names for the same chords. Not sure yet.

If you're drawn to the baritone's resonance and low pitch, I say go for it! Learning the new chord names for the baritone isn't too hard and can be a fun challenge. 😊

I have a few different ukes. My soprano and baritone are my go to ukes, but I love my Cook Island Uke. Tuning is very different - think Low G and Low A.

Thanks so much for your analysis. i recently bought a bari, really enjoy the sound over my low g tenor but in many ways it seems like i'm starting all over. i find myself playing the tenor cords on the bari. it sounds ok unless i play along with a tenor. it's fun no matter.

I just got a Beansprout baritone and had it tuned low GCEA. Needs special strings but chords stay the same so no new thinking process. It gives a very full sound, much fuller than a tenor with the same low g tuning due to the greater body volume. I'm also having a hard time putting it down for the same reasons. I have high and low g tenor ukuleles that all have a different sound. At some point I will get another baritone with low d just for the variety. The 'Oli is definitely on my radar! It's great to have choices! 😀👍

Wonderful sound from that baritone! I ended up with two beautiful tenor ukes. (Had sold one before buying the other but COVID in December prevented transaction because the buyer specifically needed it to surprise his wife on Christmas morning.) I’m thinking of putting a set of re-entrant baritone strings for ukulele on the tenor ukulele I’d planned to sell. I can see this as a plus when playing with a group, but how practical is this when just playing for fun alone? I do mostly fingerstyle every day as I play by myself.

Hi Carol, you can def change the tenor to baritone tuning, but it might need a minor setup since you'll be putting a different sized string gauge on. All of the playing knowledge you've accumulated is interchangeable between tenor and baritone. The main difference is the tuning. So you'll have to re-learn the names of chords and notes on the neck. For ex., a G chord (0232) on tenor is a D chord (0232) on baritone.

when I decided to learn ukulele, I immediately decided for baritone. Reason is, I do not want to start with guitar (maybe) and also all other is too small for me. 😊. But different tuning I have appeared after I have bought it.. I have Flight Fireball, very nice masive mango with originaly steel strings.. BUT: it is difficult to find school, course, and even scores (!). Most of scores are written on concert/tenor... So I acustomed to play trumpet from scores, and with bari I will have very small repertoare. Therefore I have changed original strings to high G string, so tuning as tenor, just richer sound.. I even can not use guitar scores. Do you have anybody some solution? But Flight is a masterpies, that mango, just watching on it... 😊 Thank you for video.

I’m a relatively new player and started with a tenor tuned high G. After discovering the low G I purchased a baritone and tuned it low GCEA. I may have misunderstood you and hoping for a reply. If I use traditional baritone tuning, can I use the same finger shapes and chord progressions from GCEA tuning on a DGBE BARITONE resulting in the same tunes in a different key?

That’s correct, Michael. Everything you play on a low G ukulele can be translated to a baritone. The only difference is that you’ll be playing in a different key.

I get sympathy resonance on my ukes when I play an Am as the 4th string is now the same tuning as the 1st A string

You could, but the string tension is quite different with that tuning, so it would most certainly need a setup. Honestly, I'd probably direct this question to Mike at Uke Republic: www.ukerepublic.com/contact-us.html I think he'd be more knowledgeable in letting you know if it's okay to do or if it's better to buy a baritone.
