ZoanBlade90 yeah I would like to his thoughts on death magnetic that album so FUCKING underrated people always put it near the bottom of their favourite Metallica album's list honestly I think it's better than st. anger ( just to let anyone know I don't hate this album) hardwired to self destruct... (this album got a bit too long and I was a bit board and tired after listening to it) load (same problem as hardwired) and reload ( a bit better than load) PEOPLE NEED TO GIVE ALBUM MORE LOVE!!!!

@@SeanStrife actually out of the first 4 ballads that Metallica made (Fade to Black, Welcome Home(Sanitarium), One and The Unforgiven) I think welcome home is probably the weakest, it’s certainly powerful and a great listen but doesn’t pack the same punch as the others, Fade to Black and Unforgiven are so good as well but if I had to pick a favourite it would be One, I think that song is my favourite song ever, I mean if you want to go off solos One is the strongest and Welcome home is the weakest, if you want to go on riffs Unforgiven is the weakest and fade to black is the strongest, if you want to go on lyrical themes, You can’t choose. If I were to rank them it would go like this 1 One 2 Fade to Black 3 Unforgiven 4 Welcome home But they are all fucking incredible

@bdr113080 2 жыл бұрын
I fall in that category too. I think when people say that they sold out I don’t think they really understand what selling out is. Their definition of selling out is Metallica making music they don’t like. I think selling out is doing what everyone else wants you to do because you’re scared to death to do anything but that and you’re scared your Fanbase is going to reject you. Metallica have never been that band. I think the other part of selling out is doing some thing for money but if that was their intention I don’t think they did that with the load albums because the only album load out sold when it came out was Kill Em All. There are two highest selling albums are The Black Album and Justice and it would’ve been really easy for them in the mid 90s to try to make a mix of those two albums just to keep mostly everybody happy but I would rather an artist, not just Metallica but any artist do what they are really feeling even if I don’t like it then do something that’s not from the heart while they’re just trying to please other people. They are my favorite band but I’m not a fan of St. Anger but if that’s what they were feeling at the time and that’s what they needed to put out. But I also don’t make it my life mission to go online and attack that album or the band or people that like that album, I just don’t listen to it and believe it or not it’s never bothered me ever again. I never got this whole idea that “ Metallica sold out and gave us all the middle finger with the black album or the load album” they did what they wanted to do they didn’t do what everyone else wanted them to do and I respect that. What did Slayer and Megadeth rewarded for staying true to the same sound from the first couple albums? Not really. Everyone loves their albums from their 80s and first half of the 90s and no one that hates Metallica never raves about the later albums by those bands.

Cliff Burton was the reason I wanted to learn bass, too bad my father had to sell my five-string for grocery money, we're not broke anymore and Dad's exited I'm saving up for an Epiphone viola bass. There's a great biography called To Live Is To Die which delves into how awesome Cliff was on or off stage, deep down he was one of the hesher nerds you hung out with in high school who read HP Lovecraft and collected D&D manuals. Something about eighties metal has this melancholy quality to it you can't easily describe.

What was especially unlucky about Cliff’s Death was that he was playing cards with Kirk to determine who would get the top bunk in the tour bus not long before the deadly crash in Sweden. Speaking honestly, "Disposable Heroes" is probably my favorite Metallica song. It might be because of my anti-war views, or maybe it's because it serves as a sort of thematic sibling to "One," which was the first Metallica track I ever heard as a child. That chorus of "BACK TO THE FRONT! You will die when I say you must die!" hits me in the gut every time I hear it. It sits at the core of a lot of my writing, particularly in how the characters view war and its atrocities. And it goes without saying that the instrumentation is extremely tight and well-crafted. Metallica has been an inspiration to me for a long time. Guys like Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted are the number one reason I'm learning how to play bass, and the topics and themes the band has covered in their body of work have helped me in my own creative endeavors, while also introducing me to other great works by proxy (Seriously. If it hadn't been for "One," I probably never would've known that the book "Johnny Got His Gun" was a thing). So it's always great to be reminded why this is the case. So thank you, Luke, for covering this album in depth. It serves as a great companion piece to the Regretting the Past episode on St. Anger, and it's always great to hear you discuss something you love.

Rocked It was incredible. I met the Marc Rizzo from Cavalera Conspiracy, John Tempesta from the Cult, and Mike Inez from Alice in Chains before Alice in Chains. Mike actually invited me to sing Man in the Box with them and I didn't hear him. While they were playing that song John Tempesta was talking to me. I also met the Cavalera brothers after their set and got a picture Noodles from the Offspring right before he got in the van with the rest of the band. It was so cool seeing the members right in front of me. When I was talking to Marc Rizzo we were talking like we knew each other. It was kind of weird. I also met Death Angel and Gary Holt from Exodus and Slayer showed me how to play Piranha the right way after hearing me play it wrong. I also met Clint Lowrey and he remembered me from when I first met him in Architekt (the studio they record in) that I take classes at. They did a record release party there. Everytime I have seen Sevendust I have gotten a pick from Clint. Anthrax also had a record release there but I couldn't meet them at Rock allegiance because they were doing a meet and greet at the same time Sevendust was playing. Jose Mangan from Sirius XM was next to me during Cavalera Conspiracy and behind me during Slayer. Also, I met Rob Caggiano again. He recognized me from when I played with Jim a few months before. Rob produced Jim Breuer's album. Probably the best weekend of my life. Also, I won tickets to see Metallica at Webster Hall. They put me in their video on their channel. My uncle got two tickets from his friend for me and him and my dad had to pay $200 for his ticket when we later found out that they let a bunch of people in for free who didn't get tickets. I met Danny Carrey and Eddie Trunk after the show. We knew that Eddie and Jim Breuer are friends so I told him that I played onstage with him. Eddie told us that he was right next to Jim. My dad felt bad because he told jim that he was going to the show and Jim didn't reply to him. After the show he checked his email and he got a bunch of emails from Jim Breuer telling him that he was looking for us and that he had five VIP tickets that got you on the VIP rail and to the after party. Jim left early and has a video on his Facebook giving his tickets to some guy who couldn't get in who was waiting outside. While I didn't get to meet them I got in their video. I also met Dave Mustaine two days after he kicked out my uncle from the Prudential center. I have a video of Megadeth on my channel that doesn't show him getting kicked out but shows why he did. I have a lot of stories for a teenager.

Welcome Home always stood out to me as their best work as well, everything in that song just feels... perfect. The flow, the shifts, the lyrics, and as you mentioned, that's not to discredit the rest of the album. Battery is an extremely close second and Master of Puppets is of course a fan favorite, myself included. Great video overall, hope more people get to experience this astounding work!

Pleasantly surprising fact: Some of the best riffs on this album weren't written by James. The pre-chorus riff of Master of Puppets (the song) is Kirk's, as is the bridge riff of Damage Inc.

I love Master of Puppets, it was the first Metallica album I bought, and I know it's the one that's almost universally considered to be their best. That being said, I still feel the need to go against the grain and say that Ride the Lightning is the one I consider their greatest. I think it's the only album they ever made that literally didn't have one weak track on it. Master of Puppets is great, but I never liked The Thing That Should Not Be or Orion. Also, Fight Fire with Fire is a way cooler opening track than Battery, (which is still great, though!).

The great thing about Load, Reload, St. Anger, etc, is: they helped in turning me on to how monumentally great Kylesa, Mastodon, High On Fire, Pallbearer and Enslaved really are. Fear Factory, Deftones (esp. Koi No Yokan), Bolt Thrower, Memoriam, Porcupine Tree, Immortal, Death, Puscifer and loads of other stuff that isn't, post- 'the Black album', Metallica, too! The last Obituary album is rocking the inside of my car like fuck, at the moment, as well. So I suppose that I really should be thankful to them (a bit) for that.

Are there other Metallica fan types beyond the ones stated here? Like one for fans who got into them from their 90's work then went back and found their 80's work and loved that too (but didn't care for St. Anger at all)? My introduction to Metallica as a kid in the 90's was, as you might expect, the singles from Black Album through Re-Load, and while I still enjoy those for what they are (hey, when the first thing you hear is those songs your standards for the band are naturally set lower than they probably were for 80's kids), it says something that when S&M was released and (after asking for it as a Christmas present) I sat down to listen to the 2-disc beast, that the tracks that blew me away the most were originally from Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. Don't know how many times the S&M version of "Master of Puppets" got played on my various CD players from grade through high school, and "The Thing That Should Not Be" sparked my imagination in a time period before I even knew who H. P. Lovecraft was. The only real problem with S&M is that it planted such a strong love for symphonic metal in me that (granted I did try to give Lightning a chance) I never had enough interest to check out the original Puppets tracks, not having as much of an inclination toward thrash metal on its own. Knowing a little more about the other tracks on the album though certainly makes me want to check it out. Damn if "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" doesn't sound like something I can get into.

sonokawaray my introduction to them was actually through Guitar Hero III when I was in middle school. “One” was the first I heard from them, and I. Fucking. Fell. In. Love. Metallica and Guns N Roses (which I was exposed to as a small child because of my mom lol) were my first metal bands. I fell so in love with what I heard on Guitar Hero that it made me search more into their music and downloaded stuff from Limewire (that should probably give away how old I am, roughly haha). Then finally in June 2017, I saw them in concert with Avenged Sevenfold and Volbeat. Fucking insane show!!!

Kinda like me as well. I don't hate St Anger as much as a lot of people do but I can agree it's definitely got problems. However, its flaws to me make it kind of interesting which is something which I cannot say for Load or Reload which were just dull and average hard rock albums. Their 80s stuff is their absolute strongest work for sure and even The Black Album and Death Magnetic are kick ass records.

I grew up with the 1991 album. like, almost literally - I heard it in the 3d grade, circa 2002, and I've never been the same since. then there was Load, which I came across by accident (no internet back then, and I was listening to casset tapes, if you can believe it). it was different, but not THAT different from the Black Album, and I enjoyed it. but then I read somewhere that MoP was regarded as the one of the greatest ever. so I sought it out. hearing "Battery" in headphones after only knowing Metallica by the Black Album and Load... it is indescribable:D have been a fan of thrash metal ever since. I'm glad that I heard their albums in this order though. this way I don't even fit the 1st or 2nd type of fans. I enjoy the 90s stuff and thrash stuff almost equally, just for different reasons. even St. Anger holds a special place in mz heart, it helped me through my teenage angst period.:D

I'm not much of a metal fan but over the past six months I've really started getting into Metallica. I like the fact that they've branched out and tried new things, even if some of those experiments didn't work. Ride the Lightning is still my favorite but Master of Puppets is definitely a classic.

Puppets is definitely one of my favourite Metallica songs and albums, it was and still is so damn innovative and is undoubtedly some of their best work. While Enter Sandman was one of the songs that got me into guitar, MoP showed me just what the guitar is capable of and it's still a masterpiece to this day and it's honestly mind-boggling that some people only know Cliff as "the dead dude in Metallica", like the guy was a fucking madman and some of the stuff he did on bass was definitely innovative and unheard of at the time like with songs like Anesthesia, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Call of Cthulu and Orion. As for what kind of Metallica fan I am I'd honestly have to say that I'm maybe a Type 4: I like a lot of their stuff but I also appreciate the artistic/stylistic liberties they took in their career, and Load, Reload and even St. Anger had some pretty cool tracks like Ain't My Bitch, King Nothing, Fuel, The Memory Remains, Unforgiven II (I at least like the song), Frantic, Some Kind of Monster and Sweet Amber (But yeah, Anger and especially Lulu were pretty big missteps for the guys...)

God damn I love "The thing that should not be", such a badass heavy fucking song. I swear the thing that should not be is Metallicas most criminally under rated song. I wish it would have gotten more radio play and more critical love than it received. Instead of hearing Sandman or sad but true or unforgiven every day on the radio, the thing that should not be should be played way more often. The thing that should not be, Disposable heroes, of wolf and man, and don't tread on me should have all been huge radio hits, all four of those are totally underrated and are fucking awesome tracks.
