Rage Against the Machine (often abbreviated as RATM and shortened to simply Rage) is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1991, the group consists of vocalist Zack de la Rocha, bassist and backing vocalist Tim Commerford, guitarist Tom Morello, and drummer Brad Wilk. Their songs express revolutionary political views. As of 2010, they had sold over 16 million records worldwide. The band was nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility in 2017 and 2018, although both bids failed.
The Battle of Los Angeles is the third studio album by American rock band Rage Against the Machine, released on November 2, 1999 by Epic Records. The album was nominated at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album, was recognized by both Time and Rolling Stone magazines as the best album of 1999. The Battle of Los Angeles would be the last full-length studio album of original material by Rage Against the Machine before their breakup in 2000, although they did release a covers album that same year. #RageAgainstTheMachine #RATM #RATM2020 #TheBattleOfLosAngeles #TBOLA #GuerrillaRadio #Rocked

While I'd argue that Evil Empire is still their best, Battle is a record that just screams " if I'm not perfect, I'm damn near close". It's a solid album that tackles it's subjects very well, and instrumentally, it has a great mix of catchy hooks, and raw, noisy aesthetics, with technical proficiency for miles. A solid 4.5/5 record in my eyes.

Something I always found interesting about RATM is punks considered RATM to be building on hardcore punk and be closer to Punk than metal. Yet metalheads didn't hear the same thing. To them, it was obviously riff based metal and they didn't get any punk influences from it. Definitely shows how widely they appealed across the world of heavier music.

To be fair, the Mariah Carey album that lost the Number 1 spot to Rage was one of her weaker records. So RATM beating it out is no big surprise. Anyway, great review! Great album and review. I'm very excited that RATM came back, but i'm still kinda scared about their possible new album. I mean, if they release new music in the near future, will it live up to our big expectations? Most of us were looking forward to Prophets of Rage and most of us were left disappointed. It's like the instrumental members of RATM lost their 'magic', and nobody would want their lackluster performance in the possible new RATM album. I'm just concerned, but hopefully in the future i'll be proven that i didn't need to be concerned at all.

I'd listened to RATM for years at this point, but this was the first album of theirs that I bought and man, did it change a lot for me. This was about the time I first started getting into politics and social issues, and especially Leftist politics and social issues. Prior to that, I was listening to Rage because they were on MTV or the radio and I really liked the groove in the music and Zach's rapping. The riffs were godly, Zach could rap, the solos were weird as shit, the bass was clear and complimented everything, and it just sounded good to me. But I didn't "get" it. With this album though, I spent a lot of time reading the lyrics, and absorbing them, and really getting to know the topics they were talking about. And then there was the charity list in the liner notes. I knew Amnesty International and supported them, despite being 13 at the time, but I had never heard of Mumia Abu -Jamal or Leonard Peltier. I won't get too into my opinions or research on either case, but let's just say that learning about them opened up a lot of skepticism on my part when it comes to trials of those involved in political activism. They also introduced me to the Zapatistas. Basically, this album opened up a lot of avenues for me, in terms of both how I look at politics in art, and how I look at music. It made me realize how music can be used as a form of journalism or propaganda, and also just how the right group of musicians can combine the familiar (groovy 70's metal riffs, hip-hop and funk rhythms) with the experimental (those solos! Morello on this album makes his guitar sound like turntables (duh), synths, and even a fucking harmonica playing a shamisen rhythm!).
@princealigorna7468

Also, fun fact: I asked Tom about his set-up for Guitar World back in the day for the their reader Q&A section (if you're looking for it, it was from 2005 or 2007 I think. Just look for any letters from a "Micheal Dark". I also asked Ihsahn from Emperor about the connection between trem picking and classical music, and Kerry King about how to play the "Bloodline" solo...which he explained is basically untranscribable. Basically, just rock your wah pedal until you get the desired effect, and punch the neck of your guitar in rhythm) and it's only 6 pedals. The majority of his sound comes from a Digitech Whammy Pedal (which controls by a certain number of octaves how high or low your guitar sounds. This is also the pedal Jack White used on "Seven Nation Army" to make his guitar sound like a bass), and the unique toggle in his Ibanez guitars that creates a swirly, static-y turntable sound when you flick it between pick-up positions quickly.

I love this album to the core. It will always have a special place in my heart. This is one of those albums that you can listen to anywhere and any time. In the gym, in the car, before playing a match, after a match, before going to bed, after waking up. RATM all day babyyy

@@dream_in_digital for a long time fan you seem to have a limited scope on their politics. Wealth inequality, police brutality, authoritarianism, capitalism etc are all relevant topics that have discussed for decades now. They're not just a pseudo revolutionary punk band. The reason why these topics are prevalent today is due to people like Bernie making light of it again.

Marc D False, Korn actually invented Nu Metal with their self titled debut album in 1994, Rap Rock/Rap Metal bands such as RATM, Urban Dance Squad, Faith No More (Chuck Mosely era), Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Anthrax and Beastie Boys were the influencers of the Nu Metal genre but they did not invent that aforementioned genre.
@MarcD1994

Joey Roller I agree that bands became labelled as Nu Metal with Korn. However the other bands you mentioned either had some songs with hip hop influences or for the beastie boys, leaned much more in rap rock, than metal. As the bassist from Rage Against the Machine said, “I do apologize for Limp Bizkit. I really do. I feel bad that we inspired such bullshit.” As you can see, he’s not denying the influence.

Lulu is not as bad as people say. Usually those who say it's a bad album are metalheads that never listened to an experimental album in their whole lives. It's mediocre but brave. I'd rather listen to Lulu than Risk by Megadeth.

@Avaholic12
@Avaholic12 4 жыл бұрын
You should've tried to get tickets when they first went on sale. I got general admission tickets in Toronto for $190. Apparently it's ticketmasters fault tickets jumped up so much. They saw the popularity of the band and increased ticket prices after the initial sale.

@@Avaholic12 Oh yeah, Ticketmaster has been known for shady stuff like that for decades. I still remember when Eddie Vedder called out/protested Ticketmaster for doing that for one of their tours back when Pearl Jam was at the height of their popularity. It's hard to say which artists have a had in ticket prices, as it mostly seems like many of them don't complain when fans are charged an obscene amount of money to see them live. Like I remember back in 2003/2004, $500 per ticket was the most expensive price to see The Rolling Stones in concert. Now in 2020, the band or Ticketmaster are charging $1,000 and up per ticket for seats that get closer to the stage.
