@@MemeLord42069 it def wasn't misunderstood at the time lmao this came out when I was a junior in high school and was one of the most popular albums that year. Just cause pitchfork (who is always shit) gave it a bad score, it doesnt mean it was misunderstood. If anything, this album earned him more respect in the industry. This was basically his Watching Movies and the only justifiable criticism he really got for this was that some of the songs were pretty uninspired/not fully fleshed out to the point where you couldn't tell if they were meant to be interludes or songs. Camp wasn't very good minus a few songs and he was seen as a corny punchline rapper by a lot of people but then this project legitimized him. Also, I love Bino, but dude isn't even remotely in the same league as Kanye musically or culturally imo lol theres really no comparison at all minus his own one he made sort of as a joke

@@sk33t_38 well, the number of artists that can actually be compared to Kanye in terms of impact and relevance is extremely small. But they're both very much on the same wave, much of which can be spoken for by Kanye's influence, but not all. To say that there are similarities in some of their discographies and their reception is not an overreach, per popularity at the times of release and how that popularity changed beyond album singles as well as those albums being turning points in each artist's respective career

Yeeeeah. But you shouldn’t have to draw some (very, very) abstract theories on why an album is good. Cal from Dissect really reaches sometimes and puts his own theories out there and people grasp to that as an “Ah Ha!” Moment. BTI had some great songs, some okay songs, and…I don’t need a whole screenplay to say that a wetsuit. Or the internet doesn’t actually mean anything. That’s super lame, and I’m happy that I have Donald Glover has great stuff in other mediums.

The insane beat switch in Zealots of Stockholm continues to terrify me. I was in the back seat of our car on the way home from Florida. It was about 3:30 AM and I had headphones on, playing Because the Internet while I slept. I was awake enough to know we just parked in a truck stop so my mom could use the bathroom. I dozed back to sleep and just as we were leaving, the beat switch happened and SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME. I woke up panting, almost throwing my headphones. I’ll never forget that when I hear that song.

This album has aged amazingly. When it came out and I was in high school It was an awesome album with some really unconvetionally catchy tracks, but it offers more with every relisten, especially taking the screenplay and movies into account which I didn't even know existed till I had spent years with the album. There are things to love about every track, no matter how abstract the ideas. Impossible to pick favorites off this thing.

This is my favorite rap album. Came out during my highschool years and even now in my mid 20s it feels more relevant than ever. The longing for connection, even when everyone in the world is a finger press away, the everpresent desire for genuine affection and gatherings, and the inevitable disappointment and angst when you realize that there's more to life than just "chilling". No Exit gives me chills, it's everything I've felt wrapped so beautifully, and Life the Biggest Troll really puts it all into perspective. Love the videos, can't wait to see your additional thoughts on this one.

1:38:15 Very minor point but it makes sense that you can't remember the name of the main character--he's nameless, which adds to the feel of the book, in that because he has no name he could be any one of us. Either by coincidence or, as I think is more likely, entirely on purpose, the main character in the BTI screenplay is only referred to as "The Boy," similarly making it so that he could be anyone. Interesting stuff. Love this album, glad you enjoyed it!

hmm.. i can't really say that this album had a big impact on peggy's music, his earlier works from 2009-2012 is just so unique and the sound is nothing like gambino's. id say jpeg got his sound from himself only

@@dez-m bro, peggie started dropping in 2009, and he didn’t pick up steam until 2017. veteran was definitely inspired by bti. the modern flows/singing, chaotic production, and internet-age social commentary. you’re deaf if you can’t hear the impact of this album on peggy’s work. why is influence a bad thing all of a sudden? (JPEGMAFIA is my favorite current rapper/producer btw)

While I’m not a big fan of this album, I truly adore “Awaken My Love” and it’s a complete departure from the sound on bti. I really think you will like it and I can’t wait to see your reaction. I will say tho that flight of the navigator and urn are some of gambinos best songs.

I never knew this album was soo hated until I looked it up on the internet. Me and my friends thought that this album was one of the best albums we heard in that time. Especially because in this time mixtapes where the biggest thing in hip hop and shit even Gambino was featured in one of the biggest tapes of that time which is Chance’s Acid Rap. So a lot of rap albums in this time where overlooked but Gambino gave it his all and made his best album in his discography in my opinion. Awaken, My Love is a amazing album but nothing will beat Because The Internet.

Yeah the people that hate this album have flimsy reasons. They hear some outdated references call it corny and disregard a classic album based on nothing. It's just counterculture vultures whining because it's popular "itS cOrnY aNd diDn'T AgE wElL!!!!1". They have to feel special somehow

BTI is like, incredibly ambitious in terms of what CG wanted to do with the project as a whole, and all the short films, and all his interviews as 'The Boy' at the time........... but like, at the end of the day even if u think all that was dumb, the album itself slaps so hard
